@HalfPintRoo: That is cool! Your Dad I mean.

"War Tubas" were for listening for the sounds of aircraft engines. They funnel the quietest sounds along the tubes into the listener`s ear(s) which amplifies the sound.

When it`s really quiet? Especially at night? You can hear the drone of the engines from a long ways off! Then triangulate the sound to pinpoint their exact movement. Worked pretty well in the Pacific Ocean! Not as well as RADAR of course...

@Rizzo71, I had a neighbor who grew up in Germany about the same time. She said she had to suilt to a picture of Hitler every morning as the teacher came in. Scary, but fascinating, at least for me it is.

You know, this is the first picture I have ever seen of Anastasia. I never seen her before. I mean, I saw the animated movie, but that doesn`t really count since it`s a cartoon.

"They were pretty good at brainwashing, back then."

They still are, look at how many people have voted for Obama twice.

How the hell did I miss out on that tidbit of history trivia?

Hitler didn`t plan the Autobahn! The highways were planned before Hitler. He just took over the popular project and now we all know why. To let his tanks roll in all directions.

My late Gran was educated under the nazi regime and she was convinced to her last breath that Hitler was a good man who just had the wrong `friends`. They were pretty good at brainwashing, back then.

Nice group @kitten9! You get them from Library of Congress @ Flickr?

Japanese "War Tubas" are actually "Listening Trumpets" and were used during WW2 quite effectively!

The Bombing Of Wielun 1939 Was not a "terrorist bombing" but could be considered a "terror bombing".
Many such bombings happened in the Spanish Civil War, eh? As well as other, pre WW2 conflicts...

Goeth on his balcony and the Korean war soldier comforting his comrade are, to me, the two most powerful photos in an excellent group of historical moments. Nice post, kitteh.
