Most of you are saying it was stupid thing to say, but I see similar or even worse things said in chats and comment boards all the time. Punishing this kid stems from the belief that those atrocities that do happen could have been prevented if we only paid closer attention to their profile on this or that, or by taking other precautionary steps... This story demonstates the problem with that approach, you`ll end up with more false positives.

freddyferret: It`s not illegal to be stupid and sarcastic. If it were half the the people on the internet would be in jail right now.

They investigated it and found nothing to it, they are using him as an example, a warning to others. And that sort of Orwellian crap WE DO NOT NEED and have constitutional rights against.

Besides, if it were so illegal, then please explain to me why the people that have made thousands of death threats toward George Zimmerman and his family haven`t been arrested and put in jail?

After all fair is fair, right?

Consider how much more friendly the internet would be if more people who post garbage like that were getting their fair share of "bubba love" too.

Yep, that was a completely stupid thing to do. With all of the attacks and similar crimes anymore, saying that was just asking for trouble. There`s sarcasm, then there`s pure stupidity. I guarantee you that if they had let it go and then he went out and did something like this, everyone would be bitching about not locking him up.

He should be punished but 10 years is probably too much if they really didn`t find evidence to support an attack. Give him something that`s a little more reasonable, but don`t just let him walk.

Half a million dollars? Seriously? And jail rape too?
Sure, The comment was stupid, really stupid. But when did we start locking up people for saying sarcastic sh|t on the internet?

Happening quite a lot in Briton, getting quite Orwellian now, best thing the Government had was the tag `Terrorist` gives them Carte Blanche to take any old sod down

Threatening violence via electronic media has been a major felony in most western nations since 1992 and the passage of the Digital Millennium Act.

No pity. Ignorance deserves to be punished swiftly and painfully.

What? You can`t make rhetorical points by referencing burning down orphanages or throwing kitens into wood chippers?

OK, actually trying to do it is wrong, but it`s all about context.

@MrOrange

Ummm, I do watch all you listed. Games and movies? Well they are just that, a scripted thing. Can`t really recall a boxer or a wrestler say they`re going to shoot kindergartners. And a few hours of news is either seeing the aftermath of something like that or something being over sensationalized to the point of nausea.

Guess you chose to read only what you wanted in my comment right?

@Mr. Orange, It`s a slippery slope here in the states.

Yes, he was being sarcastic and yes, these threats should be investigated and if there`s not reason to assume it be anything other than sarcasm then they should`ve dropped the charges and let him go.

Your argument is flawed in the sense that you don`t see him as a threat and therefore don`t think it`s warranted for an arrest.

Fact is here in the states, the people who commit mass shooting like at schools are generally the "weaker" kid who got picked on and wanted revenge.

the thing that anoys me is that the kid clearly was no threat. I mean if a guy in a weelchair threatens to kick my teeth out.. i`m not gonna take him serious now am i?

A little dated as he was released from jail 2 weeks ago due to an anon person posting his bail.

While the bail amount and length of his actual incarceration were absurd, so were his comments that got him there.
"I think Ima shoot up a kindergarten / And watch the blood of the innocent rain down/ And eat the beating heart of one of them."
Pretty direct threat whether he was `jk` or not.
