"But from what I can tell, this theory has no basis in fact," is in the article.

Q.I. covered this in their "dubious theories" one time. It`s a catchy idea, but just a nutty one.

    How idiotic. What about
    this, this, and this?

There was a lot of stuff going on in the world outside of Europe that was recorded with their calendars. Their non-European calendars would show a discrepancy between the Byzantine Empire records, which spanned the years in question, and the those of non-European calendars.

ive read heribert illigs book many years ago, he has convincing arguments, but one can make everything look as you need it if you turn it long enough.
but even if he was right, it doesnt matter, nobody would change the year and life would go on as usual. and for charlemagne...nothing would change either, hes has always been more important as a legend than as a real person.

Conspiracy theories were just as stupid in the 1980s as they are today.

Too bad for this conspiratard the astronomical data & records show him to be 100% wrong.

Well it may not be 1716, but it also is not 2013.
The monk who determined the year since anno domino made an error in his bath so it`s really 2010.

So we`re supposed to believe that in 1592 the entire world somehow conspired to fck with the minds of everyone in the future by randomly adding close to 300 years to the calendar that never actually occurred?

And every government/nation on the planet fabricated fake documents to support the conspiracy?

And he claims other people support his belief.
That`s the hardest part to fully grasp....
That so many could be off their meds at the same time.

That is not at all what you are "supposed to believe". What they said is that many documents for the years 614-911 AD were created before the years happened. When the switch happened from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar the year didn`t change, but 10-13 days were dropped, depending on when the country switched, to make up for the accumulated added time in the Julian calendar.

Now would it be so hard to believe that a small group of people added ~300 years of conquest and glory in order to better their position in society at a time when the only people who could read and write were clergymen.

That being said, they didn`t give any actual evidence in the article.

Well then this would be a good time to introduce the Stardate as used in Star Trek.
