I don`t believe we were founded to be individualistic. Much the opposite, actually.

As for wanting to have a more recent example than WWII, well that`s my point, isn`t it? It`s hard to come up with one! This is precisely what I mean. If Pearl Harbor were to happen today, we would have far fewer people running to the aid of those in need and far more people standing with their cell phone filming it, hoping to get rich with the footage or at least popular on Youtube.

The event pictured may not be breathtaking, I don`t know as I was not there. The resulting artwork, though, in my opinion was truly something else. Perhaps my original word usage was too strong.

I wouldn`t want to be in a robot culture but I do wish we were a little less divided and more interested in the common good. We`ll never be safe and happy if other people are unhappy and desperate. Not saying to give handouts all the time. Just remove the roadblocks that keep most people from succeeding and make people give up trying.

Amazing how two people can watch the same video and see two different things.

I don`t see this video as `something breathtaking`, I see it as representative of a nation of people who subjugate themselves to popular culture or political leaders to the point where they resemble a colony of ants or a hive of bees (or the Borg, for you sci-fi nerds). It`s creepy and wrong and nothing I want to be part of.

And as for the opinion that the USA is a nation that only cares about the individual is also wrong. While we have gone (terribly) wrong on occasion since then, think about World War 2. We were united as a nation against those who would seek to conquer the world. And it worked. I wish I could think of a more recent grand example, but the best I can come up with how we donate to help those made homeless by hurricane Sandy, or the tornadoes in Moore, OK. We send billions to the starving in third world contries.

So what`s the big deal if nobody wants to jo

I agree it`s a culture thing, but I believe it goes far deeper, (and far more depressing), than that.
What we have over in the states is a lack of solidarity. If something effects the whole, no one cares. They only care about the one. It`s a selfish, greedy state of being.
For example, WalMart opened on "Black Friday" last year at 8pm Thursday, (Thanksgiving), night.
This meant that all the workers had to cancel their holiday so they could sell more poo to the public.
The customers could`ve sent a clear message to this greedy company by staying away in droves, (as my family and I did), in effect telling WalMart that you wrong one of us, you wrong us all and we won`t have it!
What happened? People wrestled, fought and trampled one and other to get a cheap "Ipod," or phone...the heck with the holidays...our fellow man be damned. Watch the videos on youtube. It`s disgusting.
That`s why something like this sports event could never happen he

@Gypsybard
Must be a far east thing, they are far more disciplined than the west
I work for TYCO Electronics and last year they tried to implement the Oriental strategy of having a mass exercise before work, it failed biblically
to an extent most of the workers just fecked of the the sandwich van in the allotted `15 mins of warm up`

This is simultaneously awesome and sad.

Awesome because of the fun they seem to be having, while also accomplishing something breathtaking.

Sad because I would like to be able to do something like this...but I can`t even get the guy sitting near me in the theater to get off his cell phone during the movie!

@danagamer
yeah, and how is the North Korea soccer team doing?
Quite good, actually. North Korea were one of four teams from Asia to qualify for the 2010 World Cup, along with South Korea, Japan, and Australia, beating out about 40 other nations.

For the 2014 World Cup, North Korea made it to the third round of Asian qualifying, where the top 2 teams in each group advance. North Korea finished third in Group C, defeating Japan at home 1-0 but losing to group winner Uzbekistan at home 1-0 and losing on the road to both those teams. Japan advanced as the 2nd place team and North Korea are out. Iran, South Korea, Japan, and Australia have qualified for Brazil 2014, with Uzbekistan and Jordan playing an elimination series for one last shot.
