Typical Fox.
If Jesus were to appear today the CIA would kill him in a drone strike.
Also...(conversation 2000 yrs ago)
Mary, "Hey Joe, I`m pregnant"
Joe, "But Mary, I`m out of Viagra, how could this be?"
Mary,"It wasn`t the plumber, honest. Would I lie to you."
Joe,"It`s a miracle!"

Whodat I`m not following you. He`s a scholar of religion, not clergy, not a monk, not an evangelist. He talks about religions, he does not tell you how to practice them so you can get into heaven. It`s like the difference between reporting on sports vs. actually playing the sports.

Are you trying to tell me you don`t like the fact he`s a theist? Do you think that immediately makes him a fanatic or unqualified in some way?

Dude I`ve read his work, he`s brilliant, he couldn`t be anything farther from a fundie nutjob.
@ Freddy... facepalm.

Do you those two little marks before and after the words I typed? They look like this [" "].
Again, your lack of intelligence knows no bounds. There were no quotation marks in your comment to which I am referring. Here, I`ll post it again exactly as you did. Show me the quotation marks.
@ AvatarJohn and Jake,

Your assumption that he`s arrogantly saying that because of his FOUR DEGREES that he`s arrogantly stating that he`s a genius and non-debatable.

Here`s a debate between him and an atheist SCHOLAR in which some feel he lost.

It`s long so I doubt you`ll watch it.

video

In it he also mentions FOX`s bias against Muslims, which to be fair is true. They really don`t like them and propagate messages progressing that sentiment.
So.....where are they?

If a Christian "religious scholar" wrote the sort of book this asswipe did, but about mohamed, they`d be called a bigot, there would be riots in the streets and they`d have to go into hiding for the rest of their lives.

Don`t believe me? Ask Salman Rushdie how he has to live.

Hey I have an idea for a new drinking game! 1 shot any time you hear the word "scholar" 2 shots whenever the reporter seems overly frustrated with his pomposity or he seems frustrated with her crap-for-brains interjections. And finally, just down the whole bottle if you want to forget that you ever saw this train-wreck of a "news piece"

@QueenZira - I know it pays to be well informed when it comes to understanding how these people think and I am well informed myself. My problem is people who devote their entire lives to it, which he`s obviously done. Those are the people you can`t reason with because that bullsh*t is so deeply ingrained in them.

Madduck actually he`s not a theologian. A theologian is concerned with apologetics, if he were writing apologetics he would be trying to convert you. Or in his own words, "Telling you of Jesus the Christ and not telling you about Jesus the 1st century Jewish peasant." He`s doing the latter in this book. (I`ve read his work before, specifically "No God But God," It`s fascinating stuff).

Whodat I wouldn`t be so dismissive if I were you. After all, the guy isn`t some traveling preacher here. It pays to be informed about other faiths, particularly since to so many people God not only exists but is actively shaking things up worldwide as we speak. Fluency in religious diversity has never before been so valuable.

2l82pray- do not please get history and religion muddled. They are not the same thing. This guy is a theologian..his personal beliefs are irrelevant. He is trying to give an historical account. Isalm, Christianity and all the rest are all much the same thing- stories for the gullible.

In my opinion, the gentleman handled this in the best way possible.

If he had become irate, he would have fed the flames of a Muslim who is controlled by his emotions. Same thing if he were to have simply got up and walked away.

He kept his bearing, even as the interviewer became more agitated at not getting the response she had hoped for. Well done.

I cannot speak on the accuracy of his book, as I have not read it and am not a scholar in the field. However, in the case of this interview and this interview alone, I think he handled it with both class and intelligence.

You`re probably right, broizfam. Authors do these types of shows for one reason - publicity. Maybe it`s just a personal thing, but it always bugs me whenever an interviewer doesn`t give a damn about the subject matter at hand, but just wants to instigate something. That`s bad enough, but when the person being interviewed starts acting like a deer in headlights -- whatever happened to self-respect?

Of course, you would have to terminate such a ludicrous performance with a little class, otherwise they`ll accuse you of "throwing a tantrum" and "storming off."

@Jake Justus,
I don`t know. The guy stayed calm and at least reasonably polite. My guess is he felt he needed them more than they needed him so he didn`t want to just walk out. Maybe he also considered that kind of thing to be too rude. Probably was actually expecting an interview, too, rather than a confrontation. I`d guess that he was also hoping that eventually she`d listen to his answers instead of just shutting down between her questions.

@2L8 - "2PrayUntil this SCHOLOR writes a book about the lies in Islam, the fact that Mohammed was a child molestor and false prophet who used religion to gain wealth and position as a warlord, then he IS Biased. He IS a Muslim writer who has a certain religious slant that is meant to discredit and undermine Christianity. You cannot separate his religion from his beliefs and opinions. And the fact that Jesus was an insurrectionist has no bearing. So was Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. The only difference is, They Won. This woman is a poor interviewer, and this man is a pompous *ss who was able to talk circles around her, but that doesn`t make his book canon or his opinion correct"

He has written two books about this exact thing:

2009 - Fundamentalism
2011 - No God But God - The Origins and Evolution of Islam

You are just another moron that continues to make Christians look close minded and unintelligent.

peakingo, Aslan allowed this nonsense to go on or 10 minutes. He has no one but himself to blame. I couldn`t care less about the guy, either way, but it`s strange that otherwise intelligent people will let this type of foolishness go on and on, when they could put a halt to it. No one in this clip deserves any sympathy.

come the f*ck off it. you don`t know the first thing about this man or his book or his views on his own religion. you WANT him to be biased because you are clearly see ant criticism of YOUR religion to be a threat, even if that criticism is in your own mind. he even stated in the f*cking INTERVIEW that he HAD written books on ALL religions. open your f*cking ears. poor poor persecuted christian.

peakingo, you miss the point.

Aslan comes off poorly here because he is continuously "proving" himself ... but to WHOM? To an interviewer who isn`t even interested in his book, but in politicizing it? This interviewer is just an agitator and, by being on the defensive, Aslan appears desperate to vindicate himself. To THIS woman?

In this scenario, an author with sense doesn`t keep defending himself like some insecure tyro. He states his credentials ONCE. Then, he says, "If you want to discuss the content of my book, let`s do that. If you want to politicize it, that`s another topic. Whether or not we continue depends on what you want here."

THAT would make sense. As it stands now, he only comes off as a guy who`s hungry enough for publicity that he`ll participate in a debacle. It`s not about making fun of the man, but the way he handed this interview.

@Andrew, "peakingo, why are you being weird with ad hominems?"

You literally can not be "weird" with them, you can only follow in the act of "ad hominems. What you wrote makes no sense.

"Every day I see people post link after link of almost exclusively Fox news and how dumb they are."

No you don`t, that`s a hyperbolic statement.

"...You go on to say that all news organizations do it, but then you say Fox does it way way more, so really it`s not all of them in your view, mostly just one, the one that doesn`t like Obama."

What? That`s like saying. "You said all murders kill, but then you say serial killers kill more. So really it`s not all of them in you`re view, just the one`s who don`t value human life"

That`s just dumb.

And for the record you seem to think I was attacking you, I`m attacking the people I quoted... not of which was you Andrew.

Anyone who expects anything reasonable or intelligent from Fox needs to have their head examined. She (or whomever wrote the questions) was baiting and looking for a fight. This was never meant to be an intelligent discussion or debate. It was meant to attack him for not being Christian and (in their opinion) attacking Christianity.

@peakingo - Your comments show your lack of intelligence. He said he had 4 degrees, (I never heard 4 PhDs, just one), to TRY to get her to understand that he wrote the book as an academic and that he has a lot of knowledge on the topic. She was just mindlessly attacking him and not giving him any credit for anything. It was always about pointing out that he was wrong. He would answer her questions and she would attack from another angle, not even listening to him. She was probably tuned out every time he spoke.

She is saying that you can only write about a religion if you belong to that religion. That is one of the most jackass st

They totally miss the point that their News organizations do the same (mine is cnn, by the way) You go on to say that all news organizations do it, but then you say Fox does it way way more, so really it`s not all of them in your view, mostly just one, the one that doesn`t like Obama.

I never really actually made a comment about the lady. In fact, everything I said essentially put her in the same stupid category as most journalists on the news, so I`ve already "admitted" it, if that`s the word you want to call it as though fox news were some sacred cow of mine.

Finally, NO SHIITE FOX NEWS IS BIASED. You really think we need you to prove that?

Reza Aslan was excellent, here. The interviewer? Just a copy reader given points to mention and questions to ask. I understand and accept his point about his academic position and research but could you imagine what would happen if his Christian equivalent wrote a similar tome about Mohammed?

@AvatarJohn,
If you actually have an argument, make it. Simply mocking him doesn`t make a point.

I mean, come on people. HE HAS A PhD! Did I mention he has a PhD? 4 of them??? Wow."

This is one of the most moronic things I`ve read. You`re sarcastically saying that his PHD means nothing. That`s like saying a doctor knows nothing of medicine and any moron who want`s to cut himself open at the warnings of a doctor is justified because... "who`s he? Oh he went to college for decades and became an expert, why does that means that I can`t self-diagnose myself?"

You see how dumb that sounds.

In the video he mentions other scholars agreeing and DISAGREEING with him so yes people can debate him... if they`re on par with his knowledge.

He`s not saying that he`s smart or bragging. She asks him what gives him the right to write about Jesus -- or in other words asking him for his credentials. He states that he has 4 degrees.

@Andrew. By defending it and transferring accountability you`re missing the point.

I personally posted the video about Brand on here and I tried to post this.

The point of it all is to expose stupidity and bias in media. By deferring the blame through the idiotic idea that, "People single Fox out because they think Obama is cool and Fox`s main objective is to make him look bad." You`re missing the point. This is a moment where they made themselves look bad and to be fair this happens more with them than any other network.

Let`s be fair and balanced here and agree that she was wrong and came off hilariously stupid. Same as the women on Morning Joe. Same as that Hispanic correspondent that was fired from CNN and man let`s not leave out the idiot Pierce Morgan or the fired Beck, Keith Olbermann.

You should acknowledge that not be a whinny baby defending a news organization who could care less of you.

HER: So, what left-wing group secretly paid you to write this godless book?

HIM: I wrote it because I`m intelligent. I`m a SCHOLAR! I`m smart. Don`t you see?

HER: Was it the Democrats? It was them, right?

Him: No, no, no. I`m smart. Four degrees. Count them. FOUR! I write very smartly about religion.

HER: We`ll get to the bottom of this. You`re hiding something, Muslim.

HIM: N-o-o-o-o! Smart. Me so smart.

patchman, they do. All the time. The media overly accommodates the sensitivity of Muslims. A few months ago there were big riots in Sweden. CNN, one of my more favorite sources, called the riots "youth riots". However, all of the rioters come from immigrant neighborhoods and immigrant backgrounds, which means the details of the whole story were obfuscated by their bias.

No, Frank, that`s not even true. MSNBC and CNN are absolute equals with Fox. And if CNN isn`t, MSNBC sure as hell is. Go watch Pierce Morgan`s interviews with Jesse Ventura. Go watch MSNBC`s with Russell Brand. People single Fox out because they think Obama is cool and Fox`s main objective is to make him look bad.

The media needs to show more Muslims like this. It is a much better representation of what a Muslim is like.

When the media only shows the crazy, terrorist Muslims, it`s akin to only showing Westboro Baptist Church footage when you talk about Christians. There are far more Muslims like this man then there are crazy nut job terrorists.
