Wouldn`t it be nice if that summed up "race" issues?!
Xprez,
You`re right, of course. Racism swings in many directions. Also, not every issue that`s attributed to racism is...plenty of people "pull the race card" in order to force things their way. We`ve all seen that, too. Racism is crap. That, unfortunately, doesn`t mean that the issue of racism is crap. It`s all too real.

So tired of this crap. As if there aren`t black cops. I`ve been stopped by cops 4 times. I turn on the overhead light and put my hands on the steering wheel. And............I`m white. I`ve seen plenty of it the other way around. I`ve sen white people harassed in the work place by black supervisors. We`re not going to lay at your feet and worship you, so get the the f over it.

Gerry,
I`m a bit surprised at your comment. You don`t really think people should simply accept being thought of, and treated as, a lower life form just because of their looks, beliefs, etc., do you?

I don`t see how the race-card is allowed to be played in the same breath as "black only dating services" "Miss black america" pageants etc

Race is a factor in federal and state aid, but to assume that it`s a big part in any way is stupid.

People who think they being black or hispanic can actually help you throughout life are clearly very bad at thinking and placing themselves in hypothetical situations. Also they`re probably just looking for an excuse to be racist.

There will always be haters because there will always be those who, unable or unwilling to lift themselves up, will push down others around them to make themselves feel better. Racism, and racist type hatred, exists everywhere since differences are what people use to find others to be lacking. N*gger and Cracker are both, unquestionably, racist terms. I feel n*gger is somewhat the worse since it essentially means "I hate you because the color of your skin, alone, makes you a useless, worthless animal" whereas cracker means "I hate you because your skin color and the history of my people in this country means you probably think I`m a worthless animal simply on the basis of my skin color".
paddy215 made an excellent point: It doesn`t matter, just don`t do either. I would add that doing either then makes you worthy of the slur.

SmagBoy: "federal and state financial aid is *not* based on skin color. And never has been."

Bullsh|t sir. The SCOTUS ruled against quotas in 2003. But they still permit public colleges and universities to consider race in college admissions and financial aid when it furthers "a compelling interest of the state in obtaining educational benefits that derive from a diverse student body".

So yes, race does still play a part, not only for financial aid but admissions as well.

@CrakrJak: federal and state financial aid is *not* based on skin color. And never has been. There are some specific private scholarships for minority students, sure, but there are also some for women, Mormons, Native Americans, etc.

I was flat-out told by my college councilor, "It`s a shame you aren`t black because we could get you some financial aid".

The word "Stunned" doesn`t even begin to describe my feelings at the time. My parents weren`t rich, we were barely hanging on to middle class at the time. My grades were good, my ACT score a 26, had the intellect to get into any non-Ivy League school in the country and get above average grades.

I grew up believing in "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." So much for that, we still aren`t living up to that dream for any race.

I hope you don`t actually believe I was promoting calling black people Darkies. I was merely attempting to illustrate - via an outrageous example - that the word Cracker is racist when used in such a context.

I always wonder who really believes any society is post-racial. I doubt it will be any time soon. Cracker is pretty racist, I don`t really care what other people use as an excuse to think it isn`t

Sears dumps Paula for the "N" word, but sells Jessie Jackson stuff even though he called NYC "Hymietown", then lied about saying it at first. Double standards for anybody is ridiculous.

I`m sick of hearing about "white privilege". Forget the financial privilege of being a "person of color" and just sticking with the cops, being white didn`t help in the gay neighborhoods when the cops harassed us. It doesn`t help being a white man when a man-hating female cop shows up.

Everybody gets discriminated against by somebody. Blacks do not have the copy write on that. But somehow it`s a logic of "I am discriminated against so you cannot be." "You are the same race as the guy who discriminated against me so therefore YOU are a racist also".

They have cried wolf too many times. I just don`t listen any longer.

Bullpoo.

A person trying to break into a car and fiddling with it, having problems, is not a concern to a cop.

they will know you aren`t trying to steal, because a car thief takes about 2 seconds to get in to a car.

id say that the "N-word" is more racist just becuase of the history it has...

"I propose that, like Cracker is used negatively for a white person, we use the comparable word `Darky` for black people."

may as well stay with n*gger. back with slavery and jim crow whites called blacks everything they could that meant they were colored. n*gger sound better to me anyway...some calls me jungle bunny and i just look at them like i dont know who is more retarded...

" Can you imagine if Zimmerman had been black and Trayvon Martin white, for example?"

I can, and I bet the story wouldn`t have gotten much news coverage, no candle light vigil`s, no stupid f*cking Facebook "support the cause" pages, etc...

If it`s black on black violence, no one gives a f*ck. If it`s black on white violence, it may get a mention on national news until an arrest is made then you never hear about the trial. If it`s white on black violence, like this case, it`s the top story every day, Jesse Jackson & Al Sharpton go nucking futs, the trial is broadcast live every day on cable news and it`s all anyone f*cking talks about.

I`m as white and as nonthreatening looking individual as you`ll ever see and have had a pimple-faced rookie cop`s Glock stuffed into my left temple. To this day I couldn`t tell you what set the prick off as I wasn`t speeding or swerving. I wasn`t drunk or blaring the radio. I was just minding my own business and was in the classical position when he rushed up to my window gun drawn. He searched my car and wouldn`t tell me why I was being detained. When he didn`t find anything he left without a word or apology. So Levar, it`s not just you.

What is worse N word or cracker....Uhhh if you have to NOT SHOW ONE but show the other I SUPPOSE the N WORD WINS.

I`m tend to lean more left than right but in this situation this still tells me how terrible CNN/Fox/MSNBC are. I`m sick of opinion news.

gerry, levar didnt say anything like that.

What was said here is at least partially truth. Even when my friends and I would get in to trouble as kids, depending on what friends I was with it was a very different situation with the cops.

This however is not do entirely to inherent racism, but partially do to the fact that most people who shot at cops or got violent toward the cops were usually those of darker skin pigmentation. This then becomes the mindset of cops, that they have a greater chance of being killed by black people on the job than white people.

Its not right, but thats just he way it is right now.

And I am from nowhere near the south.

We wouldn`t have heard about it and Jessie an Al wouldn`t be calling for riots there`s the difference.

Anyone can be racist, individual to individual. And, sure, even group to group, but it doesn`t hold much water to say that whites, as a population, even today in 2013, don`t have significant advantages in just about every socioeconomic category (e.g. education, opportunities, employment, etc.). It doesn`t hold much water to say that the system treats equally a 23 year old white kid and a 23 year old black kid. Can you imagine if Zimmerman had been black and Trayvon Martin white, for example?

I`m not advocating that we all feel sorry and repent the actions of the past that we had nothing to do with, I`m just saying that imagining that things aren`t still happening, every day, is pure fantasy. And I believe that we, as a society, ought to be interested in addressing the issues that do still exist. I see it as a national problem to fix, not "their" problem.

Good point and fair enough. Since the word n*gger carries such deep and ancient ideas, let`s use something else that has no historical context.

I propose that, like Cracker is used negatively for a white person, we use the comparable word `Darky` for black people.

If you just went `That`s so racist!` then guess what, the word Cracker is racist. Sorry to burst your bubble.

I`m white, I have long hair, a long beard and I`m covered in tattoos, I get harassed by the cops all the time. Therefore I really don`t give a f*ck about black people who complain about being profiled because the same sh*t happens to me.

If you think its OK to use a derogatory word against one race, but not against another, then you are a racist. You are treating people unequally specifically because of their race.

Both of these words can be used in a derogatory manner against someone because of their race. If one of these words is worse than the other does it make it OK to say the other? If not then what is the point in this debate? If so, see above.

This is like debating "Which is worse, murder or rape?" It doesn`t drating matter, just don`t do either!!

The car story was funny and made a great point.
And then he lost me when he said that`s the difference between saying "nogger" or "cracker".

The only people who can say if the word is offensive is the people it is directed at. A straight person cannot say "fag" is not offensive. A christian cannot tell a jew that "kyke" is meant out of kindness. And a black person cannot tell me {lilly white man} that when he calls me "cracker" that it`s not an insult. That it`s not intended to belittle white people.

Once again, only whites can be racist? I thought better of Levar Burton.
