I had a cat that was a monster of a hunter. I once saw him swat a cardinal out of the air and eat it. He used to bring presents to our back door every morning.

I think the bird was knocked out or something.
If I had a nickel for every time I regained consciousness to find someone plucking me...

I imagine the cat`s inner dialogue went something like this.

RAWR! I am the king of the jungle who`s just caught his dinner! *thppt thpppt thppt* [spitting out feathers] RAWR! I deliver the death-bite to the neck. *thppt thpppt thppt* Lemme try again: I deliver the death-bite to the neck. *thppt thpppt thppt* Not as easy as it looks. Hold on. *thppt thpppt thppt* Dammit. *thpppt*

The bird probably survived if no bones were broken and it did not get infected. Pidgeon are tough buggers really - and all those feathers serve a useful purpose.

That cat had no idea what to do with a bird! An experienced hunter (cat) would have throttled it by the neck until it was dead.

The pigeon probably was OK, lost some feathers but it`s not winter.

@oobaka: Spoiler alert: The bird flys away!

@ Neoptolemos: You might be right. It looked like the cat was inexperienced and was unable to deliver a fatal bite through all the feathers covering the neck.

I wonder if the bird survived.

@Squrlz4Sale: to me, it looked like the cat became sloppy and shifted its weight and the pigeon felt it could break free.

Well...I guess I am old fashioned but "pidgeon" is the old spelling. Over the centuries it has apparently lost the "d". *shrug*

@ AJ: Yeah, the blinking was really getting to me. Poor thing. I`m sure it was in shock--then, finally, the flight reaction kicked in.

I saw it blinking while the cat was eating it. Must be a defense mechanism.
