That pretty much sums up John Lennon for me. He looked like a cross between Geddy Lee and Phil Collins.

The "judges" you find on these types of shows are people I wouldn`t let within ten feet of my record collection. If they ever encountered a Tom Waits, Janis Joplin or Hank Williams, they`d probably start crying.

    >king of the hippies
    >generally unpleasant woman-beating bastard
    >couldn`t sing
    >wrote worse songs than Paul
I wish he went out in a worse way so that people wouldn`t elevate him to levels of admiration he didn`t deserve.

    "Wrote worse songs than Paul."

No way -- i.e., I Am the Walrus, Nowhere Man, Strawberry Fields Forever, You`ve Got to Hide Your Love Away, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Help!, Ticker to Ride, Rain, Norwegian Wood, In My Life, A Day in the Life, A Hard Day`s Night, Across the Universe, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite, etc.

On the whole, Lennon wrote more interesting songs than McCartney (who could also write imaginative songs like "Eleanor Rigby" and "Fixing a Hole"). Unfortunately, that sensibility didn`t carry over into Lennon (or McCartney`s) solo work.

    Jake Justus,
Saying he wrote worse songs than Paul means he didn`t like Paul`s songs either, actually. He has a right to his preferences but, yeah, they wrote some great songs.

    But:
"I wish he went out in a worse way so that people wouldn`t elevate him to levels of admiration he didn`t deserve."
    That was just stupid.

I think they were great as a team (John and Paul, or, Paul and John, if you prefer), but I think they both did well as solo artists, too. But, yeah, Working Class Hero, Happy Xmas (War is Over), even Imagine (as seen in this link), etc. He was effing brilliant.

People forget that Imagine bombed when it was released. Then he died and suddenly it was one of the all time greats, wtf?

when it was originally released it reached #3 in the US on the Billboard Hot 100. i don`t know if that constitutes a "bomb," drawman61.

"Imagine" is, no contest, the most overrated song of all time, totally nihilistic. Actually analyze the lyrics and replace, "living life in peace" with "living like zombies" and you`ve got it.
