Good job, tug boat. That will teach all those other boats for calling you names.

I dunno, but it looks to me like the tug was responsible.

Whoever was at the helm of that ship was trying to go forward, but it looks like the tug had a line on the bow and pulling astern for some strange reason. So yeah, another vote for bad tugboat.

Some news reports say the bulk carrier had a propulsion failure. Others say the propulsion failure was with the tugboat. I agree with the latter.

Carrier is initially at, or close to full ahead, rudder amidships. Tugboat is under power, thrusting forward (starboard and facing the carrier`s stern). Tug is not in contact with the carrier, or towing its bow away from the marina.

    Carrier goes to idle.

    Tug goes to idle/stop.

Carrier resumes 3/4 ahead, full right rudder. It doesn`t appear to have bow thrusters and the tug is dead in the water, abutting the starboard bow, so the stern swings back through the moored boats.

I would say that the tug`s propulsion problem caused the accident and its position exacerbated the recovery, but I don`t understand why the carrier decided to power out instead of waiting for another tug.

So class, what`s the lesson here?

The bigger you are, the more right-of-way you have.
