Big brother is watching. We should be outraged at this. Unfortunately Mericans are too apathetic to care

It really is just anonymous data, just like when you look at your wifi router, you can see everyone in your neighborhood.

The government isn`t monitoring your f**king calls, they don`t give a poo about you people with your giant egos. If you don`t like it, stop using cell phone, you dumb asses.

    Meet the Utah Data Center.

"They park stuff in storage (there) in the hopes that they will eventually have time to get to it," said James Lewis, a cyberexpert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

1.5 million square feet, Storage in the Yottabyte range, 1024^8 bytes (That`s 1 trillion terabytes) that`s over 1,000 terabytes per person in America.

So yes, yes they are gathering and monitoring EVERYTHING. This is the beginning of big brother and if you think that`s just fantasy you`re the one living in a state of denial.

I suspect this is not Big Brother government watching. More likely it`s data collection for advertising purposes. I`d rather have the government watching because they, at least, will leave me the hell alone. The advertisers will start reaching out with directed ads to your computers, cell phones and mail boxes and be more aggravating than ever. I wonder who`ll pay for the cell phone time to run those ads...

Supermarkets have been doing this for awhile. I read about it in the Economist few years ago. They see where people are stopping or slowing down etc. Basically they want to see how to slow down shoppers so they`re more likely to impulse buy.

Supermarkets in UK, have big deals on drinks and then the magazine sections at the beginning. It`s designed to make you stop and look before moving slowly on. Not everything is controlled by some shady government or organisation....

@intrigid the government is collecting all calls. And then when someone of interest appears they log into the calls....

It`s just updating wire taps or reading postal mail with the modern age....

If you use a discount card at a store, you`re being monitored. If you use facebook, twitter, instagram and the like, you`re being monitored. People gave up the right to privacy years ago.

The government is NOT monitoring your phone calls or emails. They`ve admitted monitoring DATA. The only calls they monitor are known "flagged" numbers (terrorists, associates of terrorists, etc.). They are not monitoring every day people and do not have the means to monitor every call or email in the country.

    Seriously, are people that stupid?

TechMistress-"The government is NOT monitoring your phone calls or emails."

Sorry, they`ve already admitted to it.

    TechMistress-"Seriously, are people that stupid?

No, people aren`t, but obviously you are.

broizfam-"I`d rather have the government watching because they, at least, will leave me the hell alone."

    Yeah, keep believing that.

I suspect that this is not a situation of "Big Brother" government watching us. More likely, it`s an activity carried out by advertising companies. Frankly, I`d rather have gov`t watching because they`re not going to bother me. Advertisers, however, are going to be using the information to tailor their ads and hit us harder with *anything* that they perceive us to have an interest in. We`ll find them sending more ads to our email and our cell phones. You walked into Gamestop with your kid for 2 minutes...you`ll get inundated with ads for games and game systems. I wonder who`s going to be paying for all the cell phone use involved in receiving those ads...
