The original X-rated (before NC-17), unedited Caligula was SO much worse than porn. It`s also not the easiest to track down, for good reason.

"Caligula was not porn."
I think that`s a matter of opinion. You must not have seen the unrated version: It`s beyond NC17 material.

@CreamK: Hileogabalus killed LOTS of people on the smallest of whims. He once killed a room full of partiers with... flower petals! Filled the room until they suffocated, just to see if it was possible...

They both were bad, but one is famous while the other is obscure...

auburnjunky, then you must have only seen the censored version, because the uncensored version has full frontal nudity, blow-jobs, multi-orifice penetration and a 30-person orgy. If that`s not porn what is?
As far as I`m concerned, big budgets are the enemy of good porn.
I agree, unless you count the performers` fees as part of the budget.

A big budget for anything else just encourages the people making the film to try to make it like a proper film, which it isn`t. So you end up with a bad film getting in the way of the porn scenes, and you end up with fewer and/or shorter porn scenes and you end up with less attention paid to the porn scenes (because more attention is paid to the bits in between).

Off on a tangent, this context shows a plausible (and I think more likely to be correct) interpretation of the infamous verses in Leviticus.

In societies with rigid sexed roles (e.g. early Roman and early Jewish) breaking those sexed roles is usually extremely strongly taboo. Even long afterwards, even with greatly reduced sexed roles, there is usually still something of it left in custom and sometimes in law. Hence Caesar`s problems, even though sexed roles in Rome were greatly reduced by that time. Even countries today that pride themselves on having greatly reduced sexed roles have some pretty big remnants, especially imposed on men. With the far more severe sexed roles of the past, the taboo on breaking them was far stronger. So I think that the Leviticus verses refer not to men having homosex but to breaching sexed roles - the key part is the "as a woman" not the "lie with".
But in cases of male homosexuality it was actually illegal for any of the elite families of ancient Rome (Patricians) to assume a submissive role.
Again, when? Since you`re referring to the earlier class system, I`ll tentatively assume you`re referring to early on in Roman history, but I`ll leave you to provide dates and evidence.

It was socially unacceptable for male Romans in general and for pretty much all of ancient Roman times - I`m quibbling with your references to the law and to class.

Gaius Julius Caesar and his relationship with the king of Bithynia (I forget his name) is a good example - it wasn`t illegal but the allegation that he was insufficiently masculine in his sex with the king of Bithynia hampered his political career.

Incidentally, what was acceptable in ancient Rome wasn`t really homosexuality in the modern sense. It was a degree of bisexuality.
@CreamK and @5Cats: I think Claudius was the only heterosexual roman emperor.
I think you`re wrong.
Odd fact: it was shameful for the women in ancient rome to show any sign of enjoying sex, it was even grounds for a divorce.
How far are you going back for that and what evidence do you have? Maybe in the monarchy, perhaps, or early republican period, maybe...if any of the later accounts of that period (there are no extant contempory accounts) are true. Look at how many people still believe similar (and totally untrue) things about late medieval Britain/Europe. Chastity belts, for example (which in reality didn`t even exist then).
I dont get it, surely you can make a porn for as much as it costs to buy a phone or a camera and upload the results on the net?
But if you want to sell porn, you need to make it better than the bazillion hours of no-budget amateur porn you can get online. Better to enough people who`ll pay for it, that is. "Better" is a very subjective word in porn. Even when pro porn is passed off as spontaneous amateur porn, it still involves a lot more than a single cheap camera that was in a phone someone already had anyway.

So I can understand a degree of cost for proper cameras, proper camera operators, lighting, location, make-up and suchlike...but not that much cost. The things you need a big budget for are things that are irrelevant in porn - acting, plot, characters, multiple sets (not just "in the dining room" and "in the garden"), etc.

@handimanner: Exactly correct! Based on a stage play (iirc) which was also considered "shocking" at the time but now would be "meh".

The IMDB says the "sex scenes" were indeed added later and do NOT involve the actual actors.

@Kitteh9: I well know who Caligula was, and...
I`m very well acquainted, too, with the crimes of
Hileogabalus
...who was FAR worse than Caligula!

For example: Caligula -threatened- to make his horse a Senator. Hileogabalus actually did it!

Sound familiar?
This Could Be Why

5Cats, on Caligula The plot is about a perverted Roman Emperor and the action sequences include hardcore orgies. No wonder the uncensored version was banned. The good news is that the uncut version is finally on sale, just 29 years later.

Caligula was a big budget flop they added porn to to sell, all the actors pretty much withdrew their support once the final film came out. Kinda hot for the time.

Caligula (1979)
It`s NOT P0RN! It`s 156 minutes log and there`s like 3 minutes of sex in it (iirc).

It`s... art!
