Ermay-zing! That takes a lot of confidence. If I tried that, someone would have substituted a slab of steel for my bit of tile.

Just another reason why we should be venturing further into space. Solving problems, stretching the imagination and the knowledge of man because problems won`t get solved any other way. This leads to finding new questions to ask and then new problems to solve. The cure for cancer could be found during the quest to reach Mars. You just can`t be sure how tree of knowledge will grow and what new branch will split off from the old. We need to keep daring to do the impossible. It`s during those times that man is at his best.

I`ve held a red hot shuttle tile. Years ago, before Challenger and phones that record.

Aerogels are amazing materials. The LI-900 shuttle tiles aren`t exactly aerogels, but they very close. They are the best insulating materials on the planet, they are lightweight and strong but brittle.

One day we may be insulating our houses with this stuff.

PoptartinSD: I`m sure they measured it with a thermometer first, when they did.
