"“When I sat and listened to the movie I actually saw it was the story of Christ, and the love of God was weaved into the story," said the pastor."

Hahahahahaha...

hehehe...

Thats going to keep me giggling for awhile.

The story of christ... hihihih

..and god created Superman in his image, then sent him to krypton, because he thought that would be fun. He then created monkeys and let them evolve...

@5Cats: by no means am I saying this is Christians piggybacking on the movie or the studio or the Superman myth! Just the opposite! This post wasn`t me bashing Christians. When I do that, you`ll know it. I promise. :-)

@SmagBoy1: I got your back on this one!
It IS AMAZING that "Christians" want to piggy-back on the whole "Superman" mythos. They should NEVER do this! It`s idolatry ffs!
Stupid-arse pseudo-Christians...

@dm2754: Word!@ Props for the Joseph Campbell reference! He`s not nearly 100% correct. But when he`s right? He`s really good.

@Draculya: What -exactly- makes you think males from Planet Krypton HAVE "a penis"? Perhaps he has three? Quantity over size, yes?

Has anyone noticed how Super Jesus doesn`t have a penis?

I dont know about the religious aspects, but it is the best live action superman movie ever made.

Though, lets face it, it didnt have much in the way of competition.

The whole earth gave up superman to zod as the Jews gave up Jesus to pontius pilate, is the film saying we`re all Jews?

@dm2754 and @cheeseb: I only post this because I was surprised that it`s being actively marketed to churches, to pastors, with actual printed and electronic material to be used in preaching the movie. That`s just amazing to me, and I`m pretty cynical! It`s not that the protagonist-as-Christ idea is new to me. At all. It`s the fact that it`s actually being used by the studio as a marketing tool that surprises and amuses me.

Funny when you consider that the character was created by a couple of Jewish kids from Cleveland.

It`s no wonder that the studios and the churches teamed up on this. The studios want a piece of the Christian market, while the churches are always trying gimmicks to appeal to young people.

The phenomenon is not unlike looking through a two way mirror. The argument between two observers, on opposite sides, would go like this:
"It`s a reflection. You can`t see through it."
"There`s no reflection. You can see right through it."

Such it is with the WB/church group angle vs. the literate, free-thinking rest of the world:
"It`s the story of Christ. See? Christ is the answer!"
"It`s just another story basis where Christ came from. We created that story, so we are the answer!"

I`m merely repeating the references to Joseph Campbell and the Hero with 1000 Faces.
The religious faction seems to pick one of those 1000 faces and say "The one I picked is the right one, and the other 999 are false."

Why can`t this Superman/Man of Steel ethos just be a fun story? Wy can`t the story of Jesus simply be a story about some pretty good ideas on how to live on this planet with each other?

This again?
Read the hero with 1000 faces. It will explain how just about all stories of the same in every hero is pretty much a carbon copy.
Just about every hero has unusual birth circumstance and/or exceptional childhood. ex: Jesus, Darth Vader, Harry potter, superman.
The manifestation of unworldly extraordinary powers. ex: Jesus, Darth Vader, Harry potter, superman.
Betrayed by a trusted companion. ex: Jesus, Darth Vader, Harry potter, superman.
Arise from the dead. ex: Jesus, Darth Vader, Harry potter, superman.
And it goes on and on
