    I`m with Crabes on this one.

    Other than cold fusion (or some other source of power) there are few things this world would benefit from more, at this point in time, than a battery with more capacity, quicker charge/discharge, and size. Technology would change so rapidly. The infrastructure is already in place (power grid) to switch motor vehicles to electric, among countless other uses. Could be exciting.

    As a guy "into" electric transportation, I have heard claims like this so many times...

    More importantly, the bit about phones needing huge power and capacity? It`s outright wrong for all but a few applications. If you need very large current proportionate to the size of the battery, you`re in one of two situations:

    1. You`re drag racing and only need a battery with enough juice to get you 1/4 mile from where you started.
    2. Your battery is too small and you`re going to stall 3 miles into your commute.

    The larger your battery is (the further your range) the less power it takes per unit of volume of battery to deliver a given total. If your battery is adequately sized, you don`t NEED 100C+ discharge rates.

    That`s not to say a battery capable of delivering them doesn`t have advantages (most notably lower internal resistance values), but the extra cost generally isn`t worth it unless you need them SPECIFICALLY for those advantages.

    I believe the carbon fiber `paper` battery holds more promise and has less potential for fire as well.

    That depends on how much of it is required. If, for example, a more than irrelevant percentage of vehicles used lithium-based batteries, then it would be a big problem. It`s somewhat of an issue now, with the vast majority of batteries being relatively tiny ones for handheld devices. Vehicle batteries require thousands of times more lithium.

    But there are early prototypes of batteries that use common materials. They might one day be commercially viable. Right now they`re lab experiments that are far too expensive to make, but that might change.

    Not with these batteries, though. Even on paper, they don`t cut it for KWh, and that`s a key thing for EV batteries (unless, as Mah Boi says, your EV is a drag racer).

    Claims about charging times for prototype batteries are usually very misleading too, because almost all sources quote theoretical maximum charging rates and those aren`t reality. Even approaching them is usually wildly impractical and dangerous, something which you`d only do remotely in a lab under carefully controlled conditions. Pouring MWs into a car in your garage is not likely to be normal practice any time soon.

    My favourite EV example serves for this as well - White Zombie. It`s a road legal car with a range of about 100 miles of normal driving, including extra charge gained from regenerative braking. It also does 0-60mph in 1.8s, using current Li-ion batteries. The mass market doesn`t need anything like that much power, let alone 2000 times as much. You couldn`t apply it, anyway, or anything like it.

    In reality, the only advantage you`d get for cars with this battery would be weight reduction in a pure track-only drag racer with a range of a mile or so.

    Or, if they do SCE (long duration) instead of SCR (low internal resistance,)
    it can power my new flying car...
