How about the Dancing Plague of 1518, hundreds of people danced so much that they died from heart attacks, strokes and exhaustion.

The cause was thought to be their hot blood, and the cure MORE DANCING!

WOW! Can you believe that someone was dumb enough to think they could actually interact with an imaginary being? I mean can you imagine how retarded you`d have to be? At least he wasn`t so nuts that he thought he could talk to him and ask for favors!

WOW! Can you believe that somebody could be so conceited, smug and self assured as call themselves HolyGod while at the same time being an atheist!? Thus mocking billions of people of faith who never did him wrong. Oh well, at least he wasn`t so retarded as to do in public.

Hahahaha. Let me ask you a question, If I believed in Santa would you smugly judge me? What if BILLIONS of people believed in santa? Would that make it less retarded?

Of COURSE this turns into a debate over whether God exists. I`m getting sick of this website, man.

Yes. Lots of people used to believe the earth was flat at one point. People are morons.

What percentage of people do you think have the most basic understanding of evolution, biology, astronomy, physics, etc?

Because here is what people who actually understand the universe think about god:

I don`t know exactly. I just know what I know. My IQ is 120 so I`m no dummy. I have a more than basic understanding of the above subjects and I still believe in a God or a higher power or what have you. People look at scripture, point out logical flaws with their enlightened brains and conclude it`s all a bunch of hooey. God didn`t write the scriptures, men did. Men make mistakes.

    "My IQ is 120"

According to whom? Just wondering as internet IQ tests have everyone believing they have high IQs. Not doubting you, as 120 is roughly 90th percentile, so certainly not some overly unrealistic boast.

"God didn`t write the scriptures, men did. Men make mistakes."

Absolutely. But if you look at Noah`s Ark or Jonah and say that isn`t real, or it is written by man, or it is an allegory, then why can`t you do the same for creation, or Jesus? If some is JUST men making mistakes why can`t all of it?

If I gave you a history or biology text book and told you that some of it was true and some of it was just men making mistakes wouldn`t you just throw the whole thing in the trash?

    5Cats,
I think I understand what HG means about the percentage of Christians: An awful lot of people who identify themselves as Christians are really only as Christian as they want to be at any given moment. For example, they`re VERY Christian when they`re scolding atheists for being non-believers, not so much so when they`re drooling over some hot chick at the club (or in her bed!) while the wife is at home. Many have a true moral sense, acceptance and tolerance of others` beliefs (or lack thereof), and wish the best for everyone but an AWFUL LOT of them use their Christian faith merely as a high ground from which to look down upon others and find fault. I do recognise, as well, that this is true with people of all religious faiths, and even atheists as well, but we were talking about Christians, here.

@broizfam: Oh I understand what he`s saying, and even agree that the majority of any `religion` are pretty lack-a-dasical about following it!

BUT! HG disputed another poster`s claim that 75% of Americans self-identify as "Christian".
When face with multiple links to studies showing 76% or 77%? He made his brilliant retort:
    (I paraphrase here, of course)

"They`re not REAL Christians so I`m still right!"

Kangaroo - You should warship him.
@Krogholt: You`re right! That is brilliant! Nice job @turdy :-)

Of course you understand. Because you are sane. 5Cats is not and for some reason he is hopelessly obsessed with me. I told him months ago I wasn`t going to talk to him anymore and I haven`t made a single comment to him since. However he constantly tries to engage me in conversation despite his own repeated vows to not talk to me anymore. I feel kinda bad for him.

I never disputed the stat that 75% of people self identify as Christians, I actually thought that sounded low. I simply said I don`t think 75% of people actually ARE christian. I can "self-identify" as a tiger, that doesn`t make it true.

If you (or others) are a liar, troll, jerk or slanderous? I point that out too. Not so politely of course.

Why would a Roman emperor want to kill a Roman god? They literally worshiped them.

There is an error of thinking going on in this thread that is quite common. Roman gods were not just renamed greek gods.

Poseidon =/= Neptune any more than Jesus Christ = Mohammed or Buddha = Kali.

They were very similar but MANY polytheistic cultures had very similar gods. They all had gods to explain everything (the reason religions are invented). So they all have gods of the ocean or gods of lightning or gods of the underworld.

There was some sharing and appropriation, but for the most part, both sets of deities existed independently and concurrently.

    @HolyGod

That isn`t entirely true. The Roman`s definitely took foreign gods from around the Mediterranean, as well as created their own, and their adaptation of Poseidon was Neptune. In Roman mythology, Neptune was the brother of Jupiter and Pluto, just as Poseidon was the brother of their Greek counterparts Zeus and Hades. Poseidon was not part of their pantheon once Neptune came to exist and did not then worship him. An emperor would not rage war with a god they did not believe existed. They existed in different societies at different times, not concurrently.
