    So Cap`n = Captain now?

I had always thought it was Cap`n as in "Cap and Crunch" as in his goofball archaic bicorn cap, of which wearing it was not restricted to the rank of captain.

If you choose to misinterpret cap`n for captain, thats about as silly as misinterpreting "chest of drawers" for "Chester drawers" and I am willing to be Chester does not appreciate you talking about his drawers.

Cap`n has always been shorthand for Captain.

If it were Cap `N` Crunch, you`d have been right.

Every time someone tries to apply real world physics and facts to cartoons, The Great Spaghetti Monster trashes someone`s religious icon and posts an embarrassing but, true caricature of that icon in a Swedish newspaper.

Now eat your hard-as-rocks bowl of First Lieutenant Crunch and be quiet!!

"Cap`n" has ALWAYS been a contraction of Captain. It`s found in literature as well as kid-targeted commercials. If it was Cap and Crunch, not only would it be silly, the abbreviation would be missing an apostrophe for the d in and.

"Cap`n has always been shorthand for Captain."

    Here are the correct abbreviations

Capt (O-3) (Marine Corps, Air Force)
    CAPT (O-6) (Navy, Coast Guard)
    CPT (O-3) (Army)

Typical of the American/Canadian/British Army/Navy/AirForce to make it up as they go along. (delete as appropriate to make the gag work)

I guess they went with Captain Crunch for the name of the cereal because "Ripping your Gums to Shreds" was just too darn long and not catchy enough.

@whodat well, he`s clearly not wearing regulation US naval captain uniform, either. So I don`t exactly think those "correct" abbreviations need apply.

He is a Cap`n, as in a Cap`n of his ship. You know "Aye aye, Cap`n!"

On the other hand naval tradition dictates that if you are the C.O. you ARE to be addressed as "Captain" or "the Captain" regardless of your rank.

@DrProfessor - I just think people should get their abbreviations right & know the correct terminology. That`s a big pet peeve of mine, especially when I`m watching a movie or tv show that has anything to do with the military, I always point out sh*t that`s wrong because it annoys me.

Perfect example is when people call a Sergeant, Staff Sgt, 1stSgt, etc "Sarge." That may have been the case in the Army back in the WWII days but that`s a no-go today, and it was never OK to use "Sarge" in the Marine Corps. If you were to call any NCO "Sarge" you`d be in a world of hurt.

@chalket - Did you read the first sentence of the second paragraph in your link to the word abbreviation?

"In strict analysis, abbreviations should not be confused with contractions or acronyms (including initialisms) which they share some semantic and phonetic functions, THOUGH ALL THREE ARE CONNOTED BY THE TERM "ABBREVIATION" IN LOOSE PARLANCE."

So, you`re admitting to using "loose parlance"? When you seem to normally adhere to a rather "strict analysis"? Sad, but I thought more highly of you than that...
