wasabi, that is one thing ive always hated about superman comic books [other than that whole overly-powered god thing] is that because they constantly needed to make things interesting in some fashion, we find ourselves with contradicting books and a lot of animals with supermans powers.

The sixties and seventies were really not great times for either superman or batman.

#4 is actually wrong. Red stars do not give Kryptonians powers, but yellow stars do and blue stars make their powers even stronger, giving them a "super-charged" effect that gradually runs out once they leave proximity to said blue star. It also gave Superman "Superman vision," which allows him to grant humans kryptonian powers for a short time. Source: Action Comics #856.

Burgh, I don`t know what it is exactly about the yellow sun that gives him his strength, but If it is the color spectrum it`s self then he would be just fine being within eye shot of it. Even we on the surface get it`s full spectrum of white light. But possibly it is something else that our "yellow" sun gives off that causes he effect that we cannot measure. I have neither looked that deep in to it, nor do I care too. I have to keep some of the magic of the comic book world alive. My inner child wouldn`t have it any other way.

So.. Super Man is only super at low altitude? Our sun is pretty well white, we see it as yellow due to atmospheric effects.

Larry Niven (a good sci-fi writer btw) I`VE READ THAT ARTICLE! lmao...

I`ve also read that the Radio program was what really "launched" Superman into public popularity. Many "standard" Superman-isms came from Radio, not the comic...

I should probably have explained that making him ultra powerful with the red kryptonite makes kal el unable to control is powers and finds himself in major pain and needing to escape to the moon.

turdburglar, blue krptonite can heal kryptonians as well as other special affects. I have also heard it represses the effects of green kryptonite on kryptonians, thus making them more human.

Red kryptonite however makes kryptonian skin invisible and thus makes them more powerful because they absorb more directly the yellow solar energy. This is how batman accidentally took down superman in Tower of Babel.

I thought that a blue sun gives supes even more power than normal...This list says only a yellow sun works.

Ugh. I made it to number 10 and realized I was watching the results of a dried cesspool.

Very entertaining post. The Silver Age "Superman" comics got some mileage out of those different types of kryptonite.

George Reeves WAS shot and killed - by himself - when he committed suicide in 1959.

I actually knew all of these except the essay one. That would be an interesting read.
