No, tarot cards aren`t a sham. People who claim to be gifted with the art of divination are.

I love tarot, have a few decks kicking around (even the Marseilles deck which is still played in some regions of France) but I`ve never viewed them as anything more sanctimonious than a visual meditation aid.

I love telling the future with Tarot Cards!
I also love playing the French game "Tarot" too.

One can use almost anything for "divination" eh? Regular playing cards? Dice? Chicken guts...

Anyhow, I learned a thing or two and was amused, so I shared it with IAB!

Technically when and what for they were created does not matter. They`re just used as a medium for fortune telling, the cards themselves are useless pieces of paper.

Just FYI: "Wait, are tarot cards a sham?" Was added.

Not complaining! Just making it clear. Tarot cards are just like playing cards, only some have -much- fancier pictures on them!

When I read, I could read people with an ordinary deck of playing cards. A proper tarot deck works better, especially by candlelight and on an old velvet or black silk cloth. The older the deck the better. Handle them with reverence, using only your left hand.

Those who know me know that I am neither religious nor superstitious. I read people, not the cards. The cards are a discussion point, like a scrying crystal or bronze mirror.

Similar, except for the Arcanes Majeures.

@ruthless and @robthelurker: Well, many people believe all sorts of superstitious nonsense! Anything related to "fortune telling" is bound to evoke strong opinions for or against.

I think "clearing up" some common misconceptions can only help the matter! Even if it`s just a few people at IAB, eh? It only takes a few to start the ball rolling...

Did y`all know that playing cards used to be sold individually? That`s why some card games use partial decks, and where the term "playing with a full deck" came from...

"Marked" cards were a plague in the old days. Standardized decks from reputable companies were a blessing for us card players!

    No, didn`t know that, probably `cause it`s not true... I call b.s.

I always got better readings with runes. Then I tried chicken bones for a laugh. Never again!

@chalket: Of course full decks were sold, but they were bloody expensive! If your deck had a few ruined cards, you could buy individual replacements. Since they were printed (in many places) one card at a time. Card trading must have been common too.

@Gerry1: That`s just CREEPY! Ew! Too much Disney for one page...

I own a beautiful tarot deck and I even do readings for the fun of it.
