Make sure it is the ultra HD 240p version you watch. Really works well.

    It is called a Zeotrope.

Disney`s California Adventure has an AMAZING Toy Story one.

It is way better in person, video cameras take a higher frame rate than our brains can process and faster than this thing blinks, which is why you get that flicker.

skip to 1:30 if you don`t want the explanation.

@HolyGod- not really. Our brains do not have a frame rate. And you can film it without flickering, you just have to match the phase and frequency of the light flicker with that of the camera.

Also, it is more than just flickering that makes this less than it could be. There are obvious compression artifacts.

Yes really. I never said our brains have frame rates. I said "can process". The light blinks on and off 18 times per second which is faster than your brain can process. You don`t even see the light going off. It just appears on the whole time. Scientists say we can process around 20 images per second.

Digital video cameras capture 30 fps. So they are catching some of the off moments, hence the flicker.

Yes of course you could set the camera to shoot at 18 fps in sequence with the light. I was just explaining why there was flicker in the videos.
