The sentiment "I suck at it, therefore it must be stupid" somehow really resonates with me.... maybe I`m just as childish as the `Muricans??

Hate watching golf, but would watch that any day over soccer. Now, Rugby is what soccer should be more like. And no Wendy, we just hate soccer. It`s the gay version of football. I do agree football stole it`s name from soccer though.

Gerry!! You nailed it again!
And the no commercial breaks... I think that`s why it`s not really caught on here in North America... you have to actually WATCH the game. What American has the attention span for that?
(Sorry `Muricans... can help poking a little fun at you).

Don`t worry, yankies, I`m from England where the game was invented in 1976 by Sir Jeremy Soccer ball and we`re so crap that we`ll be knocked out soon as well.

@Saunder, to be fair I bash ALL sports. ;-)

No, though I`m not a sports fan (though I do like to here when Pittsburgh teams are doing well), I don`t really bash them. Different strokes for different folks, eh?

The crucial thing to remember is that American needs football more than football needs America.

One of my professors famously said, "Soccer is a great game...for 4th graders. There`s not a whole ton of action and there`s always the possibility of a tie, so yeah more for the cookies and juice box set."

Although I do remember seeing a TV special on the hidden groundswell of American soccer fanatics on the periphery of sports culture. Will it grow? only time will tell.

I can`t believe that EVERY SINGLE TIME there is something about football (with the foot and ball, not arms and egg) Merikans start bashing it and us Old People start defending it. It`s very simple: The English invented it (as soccer), thus the Americans hate it by definition. Not all of them, only the ignorant ones. Nobody really likes basketball and Merikan Football, but that`s all Merikans really have, right? Wrong, I am now taking of my BS-cap and am already sad that I spend like five minutes on this post. English is hard!

"It`s actually the second most played sport in the US, behind Baseball."

Yes because it is cheap and easy for kids to play, just like baseball. Just because lots of kids play it doesn`t mean it is popular as a spectator sport. Just look at ESPN. Nascar and people playing poker are obviously more entertaining to most Americans then watching soccer.

I can name a few sports that are more boring to watch than soccer:

Golf
Racing
Basketball
Baseball
Tennis

I don`t care how popular it is, it is THE MOST boring sport in the world.

It`s actually the second most played sport in the US, behind Baseball.

It`s just gotten a bad reputation since the beginning. MLB held it down during the early 1900`s so it wouldn`t compete. NFL did the same thing in the 60`s and 70`s by not sharing stadiums.

Actually, it`s a great sport.
It`s action packed. That`s why it doesn`t catch on in the US, there are no commercial breaks.

Also, it`s non-violent among the players {faking injuries don`t count}. The fans can be a bit aggressive though.

But HolyGod- there are only so many USA only based teams, with an enormous pool of sporting kids- I would have thought that football would be another opportunity, and one with better travel prospects than the others which someone would exploit.

The word soccer is a slang term of British origin.

Each to his own but man soccer is boring. I played it for four years in high school and was pretty good too. I just hated it. But my school was so small it was sort of my civic duty as an athletic individual to play otherwise we`d might have not had 11 to suit up.

Now get me on a lacrosse field. That`s a fun game.

"not sure why the USA are so crap at football- they must be able to afford the training."

Because if you have the kind of athletic ability necessary to play professional football then you go into American football, baseball, or basketball. More money, more notoriety, more opportunities.

`twas surprising to see the American football team (It`s not soccer, it`s football) not make it to the WC. Since 2010 they`ve nosedived, and now they`re 29th, behind nations such as Mali, Denmark and, cough, Mexico.

To be honest, they should do better; they could field half an english premier league side on their own with another half a sides worth of Bundesliga players. Some of the American players are in the top leagues in the world...
