I think that it`s just about as ridiculous as wearing pants under one`s rear. I think that some men`s fashion`s are much more deserving of indecent exposure fines; like knobby kneed white men wearing sandals with socks and those hideous gym shorts from the 70`s.

The best part is that it`s the Mental Health Alliance telling them this! In other words, "You gotta be CRAZY to wear yo` pants like dat."

The worst part is that it`s so much easier to catch a thug running away when his drawers are around his knees.

Drastic problems take drastic measures to solve. This is specifically a problem among segments of the black community where people actually dress like this and wonder why nobody will hire them, and why they are poor. It`s because you`re walking with your pants on the ground. Really. This law might do more to solve poverty than any welfare check.

mike, take it up with Massachusetts if you don`t like it. But most people wouldn`t consider the freedom to show your underwear in public worth preserving, it`s about as important as the freedom to streak.

But you will continue to lecture this country from your ivory tower of whiteness where your only diversity is Asians.

As much as I detest this look, I can not get behind making it illegal. I support not giving them the job, not wanting to hang with them, and so on, but it is far from as bad as some of those nasi type spuing hate towards other races.

"But you will continue to lecture this country from your ivory tower of whiteness where your only diversity is Asians."_ Andrew

Strange, in my province the leading visible minority are Black, followed by Arab, followed by Latin American...then come the Chinese and South Asian closely followed by the First Nations.

Isn`t the whole point (of wearing the sagging jeans) to show how much of an outlaw/thug the wearer is? So as long as society hates it, it will be a fad. Police action and ordinances will only fuel it further, right?

I think South Park had the right idea with their Chinpokomon episode. Once parents, old people or the generally "un-cool" embrace the fad, it will lose its potency.

You really want to stop people from doing this? Have everyone on the Today show start sagging their pants, make a big to-do over it and act like they are so proud of themselves for embracing "today`s youth." A few posts of your grandma doing the same won`t hurt either.

While I think that baggy pants look stupid, I think the law itself is even more stupid.

    You can`t legislate morality.

yes it`s a repost. But as I said back then, what has the Black Mental Health Alliance got to do with fashion tips? Are they saying only people with mental defects would wear their pants that way?

I wouldn`t hire anyone dressed that way. Or people with hula-hoops in their earlobes. And don`t have visible tattoos larger than your penis.

geogypsy, what qualifies for diversity in Canada is laughable. And I don`t know what province you`re in, but the fact is that South Asian and Asian populations are the biggest minorities in Canada. That`s just a fact. And then First Nations, and then Metis, and THEN Arabs and Blacks.

Andrew, I am presently living in Quebec, it is the second most populous province in the country. You are right that those of Asian origin are the largest visible minority in the country as a whole. Only 1 out of 6 here qualify as a visible minority...that`s under 17% compared to the United States of America`s 30% population of `People of Color`. However, `People of Color` should not be the only measure of diversity in a nation.

    Every Freedom has its limits.

Do you consider it a `violation of Freedom of Expression` that they can`t go around with their dongs hanging out in public?

    elderban-"You can`t legislate morality. "

MA (or any state) MIGHT be able to get away with this for real if they put it under indecent exposure charges; to threaten prison time is absurd, though! Stiff fines should be sufficient, if anyone was actually serious enough to try this...
The style IS absolutely ridiculous and retarded looking; I find it hard to take anyone wearing it seriously.

Geogypsy, the US is only about 63% non-hispanic white these days (it goes down about half a percent a year), and this includes Arabs and other Middle Eastern groups, so it`s probably around 60%, with a majority of under 18 being non-white already.

    You can`t legislate morality? True.
But you can legislate public conduct.

For the record, I hate sagging, but I wouldn`t outlaw it. I don`t believe in victimless crimes. Unless you can show me a victim, you should be allowed to do whatever you want.

$300 fine, 3 years in state or 2 in county jails....

Anyone else think this is a bit harsh? Seriously... You forget to wear a belt on day and your life can literally be ruined. Is this a felony or something? How would you explain this to potential employers when they see you have a record? Massachusetts: you`re going a wee bit insane.

I think a fine might be ok but certainly not this much and drat jail/prison for something so asinine. Even if the entire community vote it in the question is what ight do they have to dress people? You can walk around in boxers but you might get jailtime for wearing your pants around the same boxers? Speedos legal but this isn`t. Sagging looks stupid but if stupid we`re a crime the streets would be bare.

The worst part about having an actual, literal "Fashion" police is the arbitrary application of the law.

    "What" legally constitutes "Sagging" pants?
Is it the distance of the belt loops from the belly button or the crotch from the testicle?
    What about parachute pants?
Is it the amount of underwear exposed? And what if you not wearing any underwear?
Does the opposite apply as well, old men wearing their pants up under their armpits?

What about 300 pound women in yoga pants? That`s a true crime!

Police are bad enough without giving them the power to control what you wear and how you wear it.

I really don`t see why cops would have a problem with thugs 1) advertising who they are and 2) wearing clothes they can`t run in.

As an aside, who do you think could run faster, a convict with a ball and chain or a gangsta with his pants down around his knees? That race would be fun to watch at any rate.

    McGovern,

OK, we get it. It`s an advert pointing out that under a strict and unlikely interpretation of an existing law penalties could be applied for lewd etc behaviour.

Except they won`t be, and anyway it`s not lewd, it`s infantile. `I refuse to behave like an adult but still expect the respect becoming to an adult.`
