This is false. The mint has already debunked this rumour.

I hope American bills will smell like burgers in the future.

The syrup smell fades pretty fast with handling, but if you scratch the see-through maple leaf or rub two bills together it tends to bring the scent back i.e. scratch n sniff. It`s pretty awesome :D

@Mikeoxsbiggg "They stick together too."

Only when they are brand spanking new. Once they get used a little bit they lose their clingyness.

@patchouly "On a related note, they DO NOT melt in your car (besides, who would be dumb enough to leave them in the window of your car?)."

THANK YOU! That`s exactly what I thought when I heard someone complain about that. Perhaps the answer is to NOT leave hundreds of dollars sitting on your dash.

Every picture I have seen of the new bills "melting" looks suspiciously like somebody has taken a lighter directly to the bill. Now I might be crazy, but I suspect you would get the same result with the old paper bills.

...how is it that people are complaining about the supposed maple smell? Wouldn`t you be like "Sweet, new money smells like syrup!! Let`s get pancakes after we lumberjack stuff!!"? I would and I don`t even know how to lumberjack.

When I first heard the rumour, I laughed and then, surreptitiously sniffed a bill. Sure enough, that sucker smelled just like maple syrup. Since then I`ve checked a few but none of them have had that same smell. Don`t know if it was something to do with the ink drying on the new bills or what it was.

On a related note, they DO NOT melt in your car (besides, who would be dumb enough to leave them in the window of your car?). Also, they don`t bend very well (I have a wallet that requires bills be folded in thirds. The new bills don`t like that very much...).

They are awesome...unless, of course, you leave them on a hot dashboard baking in the sun for a few hours at which point they will melt into each other.

This is so bizarre.

Oh, and I guess that it might be useful to mention for those who don`t know that the new bills are actually made of plastic and they are awesome.

I`ve heard this rumour a few times recently and thought it was odd that people were sniffing their money. Never thought I would find myself sniffing money...

I did though. Just checked and it does NOT smell like maple syrup. I sniffed one of the new $20, $50 and $100 bills (thanks cash register at work) and none of them smell like maple syrup.

They do definitely have a smell that someone could mistake for maple syrup if they reeeallly wanted. It is just a plastic-ish chemical smell though.
