A-effing-men brother. I always thought shows like American idol dis-empower the artist and glorify the corporation as the mighty emperor that the peasants must please to be elevated out of the pits. Only one will survive!! It`s just a modern day gladiator arena.

Not to mention almost none of them become legit stars... It`s a wonder anyone even still watches.

Having a Kurt Cobain and a Dave Grohl in the band helps, too! ;-)

That`s partly true, but it`s also the case that not very many bands make it far at all and fail.

He`s absolutely right, funny because yesterday a friend I used to jam with in high school came over and brought all the sh*t we recorded back then. He found the audio & VHS tapes and had them all converted to CD/DVD and we all hung out, had a few drinks, a few bong hits and watched it all last night. I was surprised that there was actually some really good sh*t in there that I`d forgotten about.

He`s right! You get good by practicing. You practice because you aren`t as good as you could be.

So true, those talent shows suck anyway. There are just too many of them, what makes it worth less.

On the other hand... sometimes they just suck. And need to be told that repeatedly so they`ll finally give up on their dumb-ass dream and go get a real job. ;P

@ Trizz, that`s true but I like that enough musicians can still make a living off playing music even if that means always travelling and getting lots of bar/pub gigs... they may not make tons of money but they get by and still get to BE paid, practicing musicians. I`ve met some - in their 50`s and 60`s - that have been in bands their whole lives; they`re not famous as such, but still successful! It`s nice to see people follow their dreams no matter what.

"Having a Kurt Cobain and a Dave Grohl in the band helps, too! "

His point is ...Kurt and Dave weren`t famous when they started out .... they were pimply faced kids just having a good time ...learned their craft and eventually became good enough to record their music and then become famous.
His remarks hit on the notion of kids today that believe they should be famous because they deserve it, because mommy has told them, since they were born, that they are special and they can be anything they want.
What mommy forgot to mention was that they can be anything they want as long as they learn and practice the craft and that there will be lots of disappointments along the way.... and also that maybe you might just SUCK at what you want to do!

No, Dave Grohl absolutely correct! Everyone starts out like they are farting in a trumpet, then, one day, suddenly it all gets much better! You can do this and work and job and have a family. I know because I did it for thirty years. Dave Grohl moves up the respect-o-meter a notch or two!

I wonder if there is much correlation (surely quite a bit) between the new mentality of kids as commodities and the increasing number of melt downs we are seeing from these "stars?"
There is something to be said about walking the rough path for a while. You learn things you just won`t when you put a few videos on youtube and get picked up by someone who just wants to get the product to market.
