Sweet, 1 in 10.000.000 chance of becoming a US president. How does this work? Where do I see if I won?

The odds of becoming an astronaut decreases drastically if you`re a moron. This type of statistics is useless. Also, "Odds of earth being hit by an asteroid" is 1 in 5000? Surely, the odds of that is 1 in 1, since it has happened and will happen again.

1 in 10,000,000 chance of becoming a president. Unless you weren`t born in the states.

Also, I`m calling bologna on many of these. Citing where you got your information from is useless if you didn`t use reliable sources.

@Essersmith - unless your name is Obama, I don`t think you won. But don`t worry there`s another drawing in a little over 3 years.

I calculate 1 in 30,000,000 of becoming president.

Who made this stuff up? How`s the odds of becoming president higher than becoming an astronaut? There`s 1 president every 4 OR 8 years. There are quite a few more people becoming astronauts in that same period of time.

How are there odds of spotting a UFO?

    This is retarded.

How are the odds of the earth being destroyed 1 in 5000, if that was the case, it would be destroyed.

Nomud: People just parrot this stuff and don`t tend to look at the numbers. It even happens on the news. Calcula-phobia or something.

    where does it say destroyed?

Earth is hit every day by hundreds of small objects, which all evaporate in the atmosphere.. only sometimes, maybe 1 in 5000, earth is actually hit, though whats left after the atmosphere is in 90% of cases not bigger than a thumb nail

For the president one, it seems like they`re calculating nearly all the presidents that have ever been with today`s population. It just seems dumb.

I`ve found many 4 leaf clovers. I have also hit a hole in 1. It was on a par 2, so I don`t know if that counts. I haven`t played in many years, and was never really big into golf.

What are the odds that the person who made this doesn`t understand probability? Just about everything here sounds like it is calculated very poorly.

@Turdburglar: Par 2? Was it miniature golf?

"Odds of asteroid hitting earth =1/5000" is also completely meaningless. You can`t say what the odds are without specifying some kind of time parameter.

Agreed basil... Since I`ve known hundreds of people to have found four leaf clovers, based on the odds... we should have been annihilated by an asteroid by now...

Corydoras - I would think that asteroid implies that the object strikes at near full size, otherwise wouldn`t it be meteoroid?

What comes after vigintillion or do we just say 80,658 vigintillion?

(haha, spellchecker doesn`t even know that word).

@Incubus_Inc: No. An `asteroid` is any rock in outer space. Any rock that hits the Earth`s atmosphere is a `meteor` and if it hits the ground it`s a `meteorite`.

    Note: Comets are completely different.

They forgot:Yarborough Which is a term from the card game Bridge. 1,827:1

Yeah this is kinda dumb because the event parameters aren`t clear. Obviously the lotto one is only IF you buy a ticket, so an average person`s odds of winning are much less. For the clover - is it the odds of finding one in your lifetime, or the odds that if you pick one it will be four leafed?

Also correct me if I`m wrong but odds of getting rich at Antique Roadshow = 0. They don`t actually buy your antiques from you they just tell you what they are worth.

@jamilworm: True, the 4-leaf clover is on a `per clover basis`. I`ve found several over the decades :-)

True, Antiques Roadshow just estimates the value, but finding out your big ugly painting is worth $400K = rich!
It really depends on what they consider "get rich" eh? 5K? 50K?? 100K???
