Well, as far as North Korea goes, it`s pretty easy to see why they`re #5 on this list. The list was made taking into account the amount of personnel and the amount of equipment (tanks, planes, ships, etc).

Military service of 3 to 5 years is madatory for all males.

Sure, they have a ton of sh*t when it comes to tanks, fighter, bombers, and ships, but their equipment is mostly antiquated, dating back to the Korean War & Cold War.

vv Agree with whodat. Not only that, but it doesn`t take into account the QUALITY of the troops, only the quantity.

I`d bet that your average e.g. US or British soldier is not only much better equipped, but trained to a much higher standard than say the average NK soldier.

Ask Saddam Hussein how well having large numbers worked for him way back in 1991.

Numbers will not do squat for you if you don`t have the equipment or the people willing to actually fight. In Desert Storm they had death squads ready to shoot any Iraqi soldier that gave up.

You also need soldiers that are willing to fight and I`m going to wager that at least some of the N.Koreans would use a war with us as the excuse to high tail it south and not look back.

I think the NZ army is mostly made up of hobbits with sharpened twigs. I think we have a plane, do we have a plane?

Pakistan and India make good money from their militaries, as UN peacekeepers. Pakistan has about 10,000 at any given time being trained in the latest weaponry, equipped, supplied and housed plus about $1,500 per head per month.

It`s not about numbers, it`s about effectiveness. As for NK, I`m guessing most of their troops would be hoping to lose and only fighting because the alternative was even worse.

Obviously written by an American, lol. China`s army surpasses the US in numbers and force. Hell, Canada`s army (while small) surpasses the US`s in skill and training.

UK is tength due to it`s low numbers compared to some other countries... I repeat the sentiments. Look at the quality of the soldiers and equipment. Having 10 to 1 planes counts for nothing if the other sides fighter jet`s are so much more advanced you can`t knock them out of the air...

korahn, while I`m a liberal and generally a pacifist, and so don`t really care, I don`t like misinformation. Hell, even one single one of our ballistic submarines *potentially* carries more nuclear warheads than all but four countries in the world own. And each of those warheads hold about 100x the power of those dropped on Japan in WWII. And that includes Canada. And guess how many ballistic submarines we have? While China may have a few people and they can play the drums really well and in unison, if it comes to it, we can rain fire on anyone, at any time, with more speed, accuracy and reliability, than any country in the entire world. And the destruction would be total. This stuff in the sand is just play time by comparison. So, for the sake of the discussion, and, as I say, it doesn`t really matter to me, a realistic discussion doesn`t even include the US. The real discussion is for second place.

"But what about the Kiss army??"

@lauriloo: Hardly any tanks, just a couple of aircraft, and mostly the combat infantry is armed with Love Guns!

@korhan: While Canada has skill and training, we seriously LACK numbers and heavy equipment. We`ve designed our forces to compliment the USA, not to compete...

Anyone else get a kick out of how much this list has changed since 2010?

China`s own defense minister acknowledges they are behind the US by about 20 years.

    May wanna do some research.

@djwajda: That "NationMasters" site... is... GREAT! WOW!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

To get the proper "prospective" on that page: Multiply Canada`s numbers X10 eh? (There`s 10X as many of y`all as us!)

So: while we have a much smaller army:

    20.9K X10 = 209K vs 479K USA

We spend a LOT more on it:
1.1% of GDP (X10) vs 4.1% of USA GDP
    Percentage wise.

That site is FANTASTIC! :hugs and kisses: @djwajda!

    @davymid: Wha?
The population of the USA is 330 million.
The population of Canada is 33 million.

THUS: the % expenditure on military stuff is relative by a factor of TEN!
    = Duh!

    Honestly, dude!

USA has a huge military budget and huge numbers, yet can`t beat a bunch of chicken chasers throwing stones in the desert.

Who says we can`t beat whom? The only people our military can`t beat is our own Congress, who pulled us out of Vietnam on the eve of victory. Other than that, we pretty much kick any ass we want to.

The problem is that we haven`t been at actual war with anyone since WWII. Everything since has been some military action or another. If we were truly at war, it could be ended almost instantly. In other words, if it wasn`t about making money for companies that politicians own huge stakes in, if it wasn`t about oil interests, etc., if was just about "winning", it would take the press of a button. But that`s not what our politicians want. They make too damned much money doing it this way.

"USA has a huge military budget and huge numbers, yet can`t beat a bunch of chicken chasers throwing stones in the desert."

Wow, you`re a grade A douchebag, do some research. As @djwajda pointed out, IED`s aren`t exactly stones and not too easy to defend againt, I know this from experience. The reason they`ve resorted to IED`s & VBIED`s is because they can`t shoot worth a sh*t. You know those scenes in movies & video games where they`re holding an AK over their heads shooting blindly while hiding behind cover? That`s exactly how they shoot! The first time I saw it in real life I started laughing... in the middle of a firefight. Also, our ROE was bullsh*t and like @AvatarJohn said, you can thank politicians for that.

I`d have to point out as far as the politicians are concerned too that if we had been allowed to finish our job the first time(I`m a Desert Storm vet) people like @whodat6484 would not have had to go and do it all over again in the first place.
