Not on their forehead but in their front yard. Deserved punishment, or is this over the line?

Exactly, Keith2, was thinking the same thing. I`m all for calling out bad guys like this but let`s make sure it`s actually a bad guy who`s a threat.

Depends.. was he the 18 year old kid who had a 17 year old girlfriend, or the real pedobear? All is fair if it`s the latter.

This is actually horrible. These people have to live in fear, worried that their lives may be in danger. It`s also an invasion of privacy, and if someone goes after these "predators", is this sign worth another person going to prison for assault or murder?

@Paco: Here`s some additional info regarding my last post to help you confirm what I`ve stated.

FS 775.21 includes FS 825.1025 in its very long list of offenses for which, if convicted, a person is defined as a "sexual predator."

FS 825.1025(4)a3 states that a person has committed a felony if he or she "intentionally commits any lewd or lascivious act that does not involve actual physical or sexual contact with the elderly person, including but not limited to the simulation of any act involving sexual activity."

@Paco664: Paco, I think you need to read the laws of your own state before spouting off at others.

Florida Statute 775.21.4 plainly states that "an offender shall be designated as a `sexual predator`" if he or she is convicted of any of a long list of sexual-related crimes--including making an obscene gesture to an elderly person. You read that correctly: If you make a "whack-off" gesture to the old man screaming at you to get off his driveway, and were convicted of same, you could be labeled as a sexual predator.

Don`t believe me?

Read for yourself.

Squirlz4sale here is a better story

a man, bill, goes out on his 21st birthday. After having a few to many drinks he stumbles around trying to find a bathroom. Unable to locate a toilet, he ducks into an alley and pees behind a dumpster. A cop driving past sees bill urinating, and cites him for indecent exposure. Bill is found guilty. A week later, bill steps outside to find a red sign on his lawn.

cruel and unusual. it`s bad enough that he has to personally inform us, and that there is a picture of him and an address and a database to look him up. but do you really need to humiliate him? he`s a person too, man..

Why single out sex offenders, how about convicted murderers, gang members, muggers, etc.?

I am with elderban on this one. If you do this for one convicted felon do it for all of them. Soon the warning sign industry will explode.

And don`t give me some BS about you would like to know because of the safety of your child, because then i would like to see cars with warning-sings when the driver was arrested for DUI.

I checked the Florida statutes and, for the sake of the discussion, here`s a (fictional) scenario that could result in a person being labeled a "Sexual Predator."

A 24-year-old male, Bill, is taking care of his parents` house while they`re on vacation. His younger sister, Ann, a senior in high school, takes the occasion of their parents` absence to have a party. At the party, one of his sister`s friends, Lauren, comes on to Bill and winds up performing oral sex on him in a closet. The party is busted up by the police, and hearing what happened, Lauren`s parents are outraged. Turns out Lauren is 17 and they prosecute Bill, who is found guilty of having sex with a minor. A week later, Bill steps outside to find a red sign on his lawn identifying him as a "Sexual Predator."

A convicted sexual predator could mean he tried to pick up a hooker, to being drunk and passing out naked in public, to he raped a child under 14. It`s a broad spectrum legally, depends on exactly what he did. if he did the latter then put the sign up.

Disgraceful- how is this legal? Sexual crime- peeing in an alley, turning 18 while your girlfriend is still 16, flashing someone? The point of prison is to rehabilitate you into society or remove you if you are unsafe.

Seems a bit unfair, honestly. If they`re going to do this for one set of convicted felons, they need to do it for all. I`d also like to know if I have a convicted murderer or theif living next to me as well.

Oh, and if they did this around my area, there would literally be hundreds of signs up.

He did pay the price. That`s what going to prison is, right?
But hey, why not apply this to all crimes? Did you ever steal anything? Even just a pencil? Well, you should now have a sign on your door saying you`re a thief. If you can`t pay the price for your actions then you shouldn`t have stolen that pencil in 3rd grade.

"Anyhow, pedos are HIGH risk to re-offend. But once their time is up? What can you do?"
I`m no psychologist but I`m pretty sure warning everyone that he`s a sex offender and ruining his chances of having a normal life will do nothing but ensure he vents his frustration on some helpless kid.

Deserved punishment! It`s not a lifestyle choice he`s practicing (or religious) but a CRIME that he committed (more than once? hope not). If he can`t pay the price for his actions, he shouldn`t have done them in the first place.

@paperduck: If TWO (or more) people have the same name(s)? HOW can you tell them apart based on what is written on THIS SIGN?
You CANNOT!

Before I could form an opinion, I would need to know what he was convicted of. In many states, an 18 year old who has sex with a 16 year old can be labeled a "sexual predator".

I`d point out that many `unnatural sex acts` that are now considered normal, such as interracial sex, sex outside union and oral sex have all been considered sex crimes in the past.

I`d honestly not want to know if my neighbour was convicted of more or less any crime. If he has done his time and the courts decide she is safe to be out in the community, then why hound her with signs like these.

@paperduck: Which PARTICULAR "Sean Starling" would you enjoy seeing dead? The sex criminal or the 5-8 unfortunate souls who have the same name as him? Idiot.

FYI: There`s a guy with the same name as me (and my name is NOT common) who lives just a few blocks away and buys catfood at the same store I do!

While "Sean Starling" is an uncommon name (just 11 in the USA) that`s not the point.

@oobaka: To be fair: Murderers actually have a lower rate of repeating their offence than pedophiles... possibly because they spend more time locked up? Anyhow, pedos are HIGH risk to re-offend. But once their time is up? What can you do?

As long as it is done by what level of an offender you are I am fine. If a 17 year-old continues to has sex with his 16 year-old girlfriend after his 18th b-day he could be classified as a sex offender. I wouldn`t want someone like that to go through this. Or a kid who gets caught sexting. There are a lot of stupid laws that should not be included with `sex offender`.

it`s odd that people convicted of sex crimes have to register and have poo like this done to them but how many convicted (and released) murderers are walking freely among us? There`s even a website (or 1000) that tracks sexual predators but, afaik, there`s none for killers. Not saying sexual predators deserve a break but I`d like to be informed if a murderer moved in next door...which was actually the case.

The only thing I see wrong is that some of these "predators" are just people that took a piss in the wrong spot, someone saw them and they get turned in and labeled a sexual deviant/predator. If they limited it to those that actually did anything to someone else or tried to, that would be genius.

Just a follow-up on my earlier post. This sign isn`t a result of Florida law (or more specifically, the Florida Sexual Predator Act); it`s a product of an overzealous sheriff who, I`d wager, thinks this photo will be just the thing to help him get elected in the next election cycle. ("Sheriff Brown, at right in photo above, takes a TOUGH STANCE on sexual predators.")

I would hope that the local ACLU chapter would be willing to combat the sign on the basis of "cruel and unusual punishment." It is, after all, pretty much an invitation to vigilantism.

Meanwhile:

Sean Starling of Hannover Street had his car set on fire.
Sean Starling of Covenington Ave`s house was spray painted and windows broken
Sean Starling of Browning Road was threatened with violence by his neighbors if he didn`t move away
Sean Starling of Hearth Street Apartments...

You get the idea? This is just STUPID.

As much as these scumballs deserve such treatment, there are two problems in signposting them:
1. Any "predator" sincere about becoming a decent citizen has no chance of finding/keeping a job, relating with neighbours, being a full member of society, etc. He`d likely become a hermit of sorts, fantasizing about his next victim.
2. As Squrlz says, it begs targeting and abuse of all kinds, including arson and drive-bys. How could even mow his lawn?

The statute seems driven more by revenge than any sincere attempt to forestall future assaults by offenders.

@Gerry1of1 - You and I need to hang out and make this happen. Putting it in someone else`s yard = Genius. Then we hide in the bushes, snuggling tight as the soft warm light of the morning sun caresses our dew covered bodies. Our arms and legs entwined as we share our warmth, waiting for our victim to leave for their day only to find out they are a pedophile and two strange grown men are spooning in their bushes. Purely for warmth mind you. As I said, genius.

at this rate they might as well just kill them and get it over with. what happens if they move like so many do? will they rip up the sign and move it with them? then what happens to the land value since everyone will know thats the house that the predator lived in. as much as i hate the idea, there has to be a line/time frame where this fades away. if not, then what about other crimes. why not do this to every drunk driver or convicted felon. just sayin

I just looked up the Florida Sexual Predators Act (which is referenced by this sign) and it states only that people, day care centers, schools, etc. located or living within 1 mile of a convicted sexual predator must be notified of the predator`s presence. The act says the notification must include the predator`s name and a recent photograph and it`s clear that the legislation intends for the local police to give a written bulletin to the schools, etc. Nowhere in the act does it state that the local law enforcement agency must post a sign like the one seen here. I get the sense that some enthusiastic local sheriff has gotten carried away. Notification as required by the FSPA is sensible; this sign, however, constitutes harassment and abuse.

I think it depends on the situation. For instance, if Sean and his girlfriend enjoyed sexytimes while they were on opposite sides of the age of consent (and I don`t mean like WAY on the opposite sides, we`ll say he was 20 and she was 16), her parents find out and decide to make a big deal out of it...then this would be total overkill. If, however, Sean decided to grope up on little kids or rape people, then by all means, put up the sign and make it as big as you like.
