Our constitution protects the right to a fair trial. It does not promise free health care. Educate yourself...

Preamble to the Constitution sites the purpose as "promote the general wellfare". That could include socialized medicine.

last time I checked, if I`m bleeding to death, and I walk into an emergency room... ANYWHERE IN AMERICA... whether or not I have healthcare... and they are required to treat me. Hmmmm...

    "Educate yourself..."

You may want to first. The constitution mentions the right to have counsel but NOTHING about getting one for free.

Yes. You will get triage if you are physically injured. So hopefully that is the only medical condition you ever have. Don`t get cancer.

Yeah, you`ll get a free lawyer, one that will sell you out at the first opportunity. You get what you pay for attorney wise.

At least doctors have a Hippocratic oath to uphold and anyone can get emergency care at a hospital at anytime here.

"one that will sell you out at the first opportunity. You get what you pay for attorney wise."

That is dumb. That might be the case for a lifer, but a lot of people in the public defenders office are young lawyers looking to earn experience and get noticed to be able to work for big firms. They might work even harder for you since winning your case is their only reward versus someone who makes $300 an hour whether you go to jail or not.

HG: The truth is that the public defenders office is so swamped with cases around the country that they might only get a few minutes to review the facts of a case and they settle for plea deals way to easily. When you hire a real attorney, they work for you, not hundreds of others at the same time that day.

I`ve seen defendants with the same case, brothers, one hired a lawyer the other didn`t. The first was forced to take a plea, the other fought the charges and later they were dropped completely. We are supposed to get equal justice under the law, that`s not the case when you rely on a public defender.

I don`t doubt that, however I think "will sell you out at the first opportunity" is totally unfair.

"We are supposed to get equal justice under the law, that`s not the case when you rely on a public defender."

Do you really think the medical care someone gets at a free clinic is the same quality as what they get at the Mayo Clinic?

Of course not. Free service will never be as good as what you pay big bucks for, but the point of this post is at least you get service no matter what when it comes to needing a lawyer.

I am really curious what the answer to this is from the anti-Obamacare crowd. It`s been brought up a few times here but never answered. If you do not have insurance and get a major illness you are screwed. I guess you could divorce your spouse and get government assistant but good luck getting any decent cancer care with that. The only other option is to bankrupt your family. That last one is the reason I have insurance - I would never put my family in that situation.

    Just for info:
Emergency care: doctors try to keep you alive
Health care: doctors try to get you healthy again

    (I prefer general health care)

Please look up and differentiate between the terms `General` and `Individual`.

See, I can too, and get to see him tomorrow. Same way with getting into a hospital.

Whereas NHS guarantees that `You have the right to start your consultant-led treatment within a maximum of 18 weeks from referral, unless you choose to wait longer, or it is clinically appropriate that you wait longer.` (that`s from their website)

i love that in america `social` seems to spell out communism..
to me, being social means you are, well, as the word sais. if a system is social, it is, well, as the word sais again. so you can have a social democracy or a social communistic system. hell, it is even possible to have a social kapitalistic system, though less likely cause those to seem to be mutually exclusive, for what ever reason.

yes i pay for my healthcare, so does everyone in the netherlands, or at least, they should. But that being said, i will never use all i pay for, i hope, but if i would need to, i can. done.
i hear of families state side that lose good jobs and lots of money just to get helped.. all i can say is that that doesnt happen in our social democracy

(mind you, i still think the banks are getting away with preverbial murder, but that is a western world issue i fear)

If there`s one thing I recommend for Americans traveling abroad and vice versa, don`t generalize a foreign country and make while statements without understanding the complexity of the laws, the people, and the culture. We barely understand it ourselves in our respective countries. You just seem like an A$$ by doing so.

Yeah because they take care of Cancer patients in the UK. Oh, wait...

Cancer sufferers refused life-extending drugs despite Government pledge

Why are cancer patients being denied drugs which could extend their lives?

There is so much America bashing on this site. Everyone talks about getting along and how we need to be a more kind society but the truth reveals something else entirely.
Every country has its issues but its fun to poke the guy at the top I guess. We won`t be here forever, actually we aren`t all that great in a lot of ways but we have greatness in our country as well as the bad. Maybe try some positive posting just for one day? Would it kill you?
I used to love this site, I would show up, check out all the funny vids and posts. Then the content seemed to change and I started reading the comments (that was the real mistake), and now I just try to only look at the media, ignoring the rest but how do you avoid this?
It`s just petty and shows some people can only feel good when pooting on others.
Don`t bother to reply, when I do post I don`t come back to see any of the witty retorts left for me. :D

we are not ast the top anymore...aside from military might the US leads the world in nothing you would want to lead in.

education...25th...yea that means we are going to suck so much balls in the next few generations that no one will ever remember a time when the US was a powerful nation.

we should be upset and we should point out the things that make no sense and do nothing for us. you call it bashing, most of us call it truth.

Preamble to the Constitution sites the purpose as "promote the general wellfare". That could include socialized medicine.
No, Gerry, it could not and does not. Those clauses in the preamble do not grant the government ANY powers whatsoever. They only describe the ENDS to which the government should apply its SPECIFICALLY ENUMERATED powers.

Look at it this way. The rules of football state: "The object of the game is to advance the ball into the other team`s end zone..." If I read this in the same way that liberals read the constitution, I should be allowed to send my players onto the field in Abrams battle tanks. Would that not serve the objective? You have to read a little farther into the rules to find out the SPECIFICALLY ENUMERATED methods you are allowed to use to accomplish the objective -- something liberals conveniently fail to do after reading the General Welfare and Commerce clauses.

@MeGrendel: "You have the right to start your consultant-led treatment within a maximum of 18 weeks from referral"

This is specifically when your GP refers you for non-emergency hospital treatment (the actual wait averages 4 weeks). However, you can visit your GP anytime you like, with or without an appointment and most areas have GP-led health centres offering walkin service 8am-8pm, seven days a week. (that`s also from their website)

Ain`t it cute that OldOllie thinks quoting a former National Lampoon editor means something! I`m sure the author of "How to Drive Fast on Drugs While Getting Your Wing-Wang Squeezed and Not Spill Your Drink" MUST have some amazing insights, right?

By the way, the founding fathers SUPPORTED government health care AND the individual mandate. Look up 1798`s "An act for the relief of sick and disabled seamen" which authorized the creation of a government-operated marine hospital service and MANDATED that privately-employed sailors be required to purchase health care insurance. There was no debate as to "the founding father`s intentions," these WERE the founding fathers!

chalket-"This is specifically when your GP refers you for non-emergency hospital treatment."

Well, when my GP referes me for non-emergency hospital treatment, I go directly to the hospital.

    chalket-"actual wait averages 4 weeks"

    My wait is no weeks.

Also I`ve heard you`re starting to have a shortage of dentist, as more and more dentists are only accepting private patients.

@MeGrendel: "when my GP referes me"; "My wait is no weeks."

    A) No one is saying our system doesn`t work for some, you happen to be one of the lucky ones. B) Nearly 20% of Americans wait more than 6 days just to see a doctor.
