Link: Question Of The Day: A Modern Curriculum? - You`re taught Math, Science--even PE. But what non-traditional subjects should students be taught? Manners? Hygiene?

    Manners? Hygiene?

Kids should come to school at a minimum with those 2 before their first day in kindergarten. It is not the responsibility of the school to potty train kids, but they do.

At a point where students are graded more on passing a single test instead of accumulated knowledge I don`t think we should even focus on non traditional subjects. At this point just having the kids be able to read, write, and perform enough arithmetic to survive simple financial transactions would be good enough for me.

#2, Money Management is a big one. I`m pretty sure if people that walked out of high school had a basic understanding of credit card pitfalls, debt, college loans, interest rates and so on, there wouldn`t be so many bankruptcies happening right now.

4 of the five should be taught by the parents. my kids know how to balance a checkbook and manage their money. social skills - that was once called recess; also should be taught by your parents when you are in public with them. this will also serve for internet etiquette. if you wouldn`t say it to their face, then don`t post it. and if you would post it...still don`t. Health again - parents have control of this from birth. My kids did not have soda until they were in high school. If you want the school to educate them, it shouldn`t have to be burdened with parenting....

"Should be taught" implies it has to be something that is not currently taught.

We aren`t even getting the basics of Reading, Writing and Math through to these kids. How the hell are we going to build a society were a high school diploma doesn`t even guarantee they can read?

#1 Get rid of this multi-culturalism BS
#2 Get rid of the bi-lingual crap
#3 Teach life skills and vocational education

But get the basics down FIRST!

I agree with everyone else on nailing down the basics before adding in anything else, I`d love to know how the kids in my graduating class received the same diploma I did when I see them posts things like "Ant that the fudgeken sweat (sweet)" "I beleave ur wrong" and my favorite "I inushly thought that was real"

I want to see LOGIC taught. Far too many people fail to understand the gaping flaws in arguments presented as facts and blithely accept nonsense like 9/11 conspiracies, anti-gay marriage arguments, homeopathy, ESP, and so-called "therapeutic touch," to list a very few. Kids should be taught what questions to ask ("Where is your evidence?" Why should I accept your incredible theory over the likely and rational one?") and what constitutes a good argument, credible evidence, a theory, and an accepted conclusion. I swear 3/4 of the population is clueless in this regard.

This list was just plain stupid. The only thing here that might make a difference would be money management.

Evolution? Seriously? It`s maybe worth 2 weeks in a year-long biology class, but it`s not worth singling out on a list of 5 subjects. Oh, I absolutely believe in evolution, but since I`ve gotten out of school, I can honestly say that I have NEVER found myself in a situation where it mattered in the least whether another person believed in evolution or creation.

How about teaching reading, writing, math, and science (physics, chemistry, and biology)? We`re graduating kids today who can`t do ANY of that (but they all FEEL good about their abilities).

All these kids know anything about is multiculturalism, recycling, global warming, and condoms, all of which will get you a job at McDonald`s IF you`re lucky, and the manager is willing to train you from scratch how to do something useful like pointing to the pictures of the food on the cash register keys.

He went back out to the lobby and sat down next to his friend.

"What did you sign up for?" asked Cleatus.

"I`m takin` a course in Logic," announced Bubba proudly.

"What the heck is logic?" asked Cleatus.

"Well, it`s a fancy way of thinkin`," replied Bubba.

What in the Sam Hill are you talkin` about?" asked Cleatus.

"Well," replied Bubba, "let me ask you somethin`. Do you have a weedeater?"

    "No."

    "You`s queer, ain`tcha?"

@carmium, you reminded me of a joke. Bubba and Cleatus went to sign up for a night course at the community college. Bubba went in to the registrar`s office and asked what courses were available. The registrar said he might like to take a course in Logic. "What`s Logic?" he asked.

The registrar replied, "It`s a way of organizing information and thought processes."

Bubba asked, "What do you mean by that?"

"Well, do you have a weedeater?"

    "Yeah."

"Well, if you have a weedeater, I can infer that you own a house, right?"

    "Yeah."

"And if you own a house, I can infer that you`re married, right?"

    "Yeah."

"And if you`re married, I can infer that you`re heterosexual, right?"

    "Yeah!"

So, you see, with logic, I could tell all that about you from just the fact that you have a weedeater."

I`d agree with money management, but wow, the author talked about making things like "climate change" standard. You see, this is part of the crux of the canyon-esque political divide in our country. Climate change is sooo not set it stone yet there the lefty`s go wanted to indoctrinate the young. How about some basics. How about reading, writing, math, basic science. Curriculum(s) are already nuts these days. I was helping the 4th grader out yesterday and there`s like 7000 different ways to multiply now! No wonder kids are so damn confused! There`s two kinds of people in this world; those that make things more difficult than they need to be and those that do not.

Ollie; I remember that one! Bit of a gap between owing a house and being married to someone of the opposite sex, but it`s still kinda funny.

internet etiquette should not be taught.
    Evolution is already taught.
Health should be better embedded in PE.
FREAKIN PHILOSOPHY SHOULD BE TAUGHT... OR A CLASS ON LOGIC.
