There`s been plenty of gay hockey players... I guess that shows how many Americans watch hockey... ;-/

"I`m heterosexual!" See? ...no one gives a crap. Yet I`m supposed to be all wowed and awe-inspired at how courageous, brave, and heroic this announcement is? Puuhhhlllease! This doesn`t even break the top one billion. Just so you know gay people, most of the rest of us don`t give two craps if you`re gay or not. Just letting you know.

Good for him, and for those who say they don`t care- good for you too. No one should care, but sadly, many do, so the more visible gay and trans people out there the more normal it will seem- and easier for those kids who have a hard time.

As long as he can average me 18 points and 9 boards, I could care less who he "drives the lane and takes it to the basket" to.

Good on Jason Collins. For all those of you saying it is not a big deal, there has NEVER been an openly gay active player on a major U.S. team sport. NEVER. Until now. And, when the world doesn`t end, hopefully all the gay bashers will realize what we all know already; that it really isn`t a big deal.

President Obama phoned him. Good to know Obama has solved all the world`s problems and has so much free time... to go golfing... and call homosexuals... and take photo ops of "private moments"...

@LandoGriffin: Not "out of the closet" but yeah, openly gay. Randy Cunneyworth and the other guy we got from Toronto with him? Dave McLlwain I think. They were boyfriends. It was called a "locker room distraction" back then :-)

In baseball, Dave Stewart dated a "shemale" (pre-op) does that count as openly gay?

5Cats - I googled "Cunneyworth gay" to see if any mention of the "locker room distraction" is on the internet, and all I found was criticism by Montreal fans for hiring him as coach in 2011 despite that he doesn`t speak French. Are you sure he has admitted being gay? Because I`d think there would be a mention somewhere, such as in the articles speculating that John Madden is the anonymous gay NHL player that has discussed the issue without identifying himself.

@LandoGriffin: It was a VERY local story! Either McLlwain or Taberacci (a good goalie) was the main part of the deal, but he refused to be trades without Cunneyworth! lolz!

Given Toronto Maple Leaf`s long history of child sex abuse by their homosexual staff (Team? Arena? Both?)? It`s no wonder THEY don`t talk about it... even though it was "common knowledge" in Toronto`s gay community. The "Kids in the Hall" made many references to it...

Anyhow, a few months after that? They broke up! Cunneyworth started playing badly, it was a whole NEW sort of "locker-room distraction" (fighting ex-lovers) and he got traded ;-)

Winnipeg is a VERY accepting place! We didn`t care one bit. I had several friends who worked at the arena around that time who told me of this amusing story. :-)
