@SleepyHallow: Well THAT makes perfect sense! They have lots of "regulations" in place right now, and it still caught fire and exploded.

I`m trying to avoid using this word, but it so richly applies here: idiot.

It`s a tragic event that in all likelihood could not have "been avoided". Sometimes accidents just "happen".

This is the direct result of the draconian gun control laws that Obama forced on the American citizens... it must be!

Yes, Gerry, it`s Obama, liberals and, of course, "the gays" fault. Somehow :P

I don`t know how yet but I`m sure this is Obama`s fault.

That`s crazy. I sometimes go through West on my way to Lampassas in Central Texas. It`s about 30 miles west of Killeen/Ft. Hood. It registered a 2.1 magnitude earthquake. The explosion could be heard all the way in Waxahachie around 45 miles away.

@Hopefulbliss, I`m no chem fan, not even a dabbler, but a brief look into the IPCS (WHO International Programme on Chemical Safety has a relevant excerpt:

3.4 Hazardous characteristics

Under normal conditions, both nitrites (except the ammonium salt) and nitrates are stable compounds. However, at higher temperatures they decompose, and may be explosive at extreme conditions (high temperature and pressure).
Nitrites also decompose in weak acids. Generally, the presence of chlorides, some metals and organic material destabilize both nitrates and nitrites.

It then goes on to describe various decompositions. None of which appear to be RONO2.
I know that this doesn`t quite answer your question, perhaps someone else here will be more qualified to do so.
#1 It`s NEAR Waco.. some 2o miles away.
#2 it`s a Fertilizer Plant and those things sometimes... explode!

So NO conspiracy! No Branch Davidians to blame for it!
1 20 miles is pretty close, Perth is near Kalgoori in Australia some 370 miles away in the great expanse that is Australia
2 no cause of the explosion has been attributed yet.

So while I agree with you`re attempt to swell any potential Branch Davidians conspiracy. You don`t actually know any more then anyone else at the moment. For all we know it could have been but we won`t know until the investigation is finished so keep calm and carry on and don`t make conclusions to try and rule out other conclusions.

To any knowledgeable Chem fans out there... Is there any way the Nitrate in the fertilizer could have reacted to form a Nitrate ester? I mean, could that even happen in "natural" conditions in the plant?

It`s still scary and the video SURE IS scary! But it could have been worse and it MOST LIKELY has an accidental cause...
