I was walking by a local river a while ago and was surprised to see a couple of otters cavorting in a backwater. Across from a mobile home park, just down from a huge mall and off a well-used trail, and here they were splashing and chasing and doing otter stuff. How can you not love these critters?

@Sutra46 - that was so cute! Otters in the space of 15 minutes have become one of my favourite animals!

They sleep on their back on water and hold hands with other otters so they won`t float away :-)

Go to the bottom of my garden ( yeah- I live somewhere amazing- and I brag) and look at the bits of fish- HUGE pike for starters. You might consider wearing a cup- I doubt an otter would take a bite- but you would be in the treble section of the choir thereafter if they did...

madduck

They are coming back strongly on the upper reaches of the Tyne and, yes, a lot of people glancing them for the first time are surprised at how big they can get. Three feet long (four including the tail) is not uncommon for a male.

When you are fishing in the nght up to your thighs in waders and you become aware that otters are curious and investigating, that is a great feeling, but you are also aware that they are serious carnivores and your tackle is inches above the water.

Yeah, they are. I also really like mongooses and until a few minutes ago when I looked them up on wiki I had assumed that they were closely related to mustelids like the otter, stoat and badger. But apparently not. Just physically similar.

I found that interesting.

we have river otters near us - and on occasion i get to see them very close! The male is really quite big- Labrador size. If you look at pictures of the late Terry Nutkins you can see what an otter bite can do- and they certainly have some damn big fish!
