@Mr Atari no, it`s the illusion that he is one (~100k years ago, hundreds or thousands of people would probably only assemble like that for the alpha male - today we got people doing that for new sneakers or singers for example). just like the light bulb is not moonlight for the moth.

@squrlz yeah there`s something that can be said about girls (or anyone) who realize their instincts are being targeted and aren`t swept away by them and the others just get overtaken by them. Probably has to do a lot with upbringing like you brought up.

@paperduck, are you suggesting Justin Bieber is an alpha male???

If this were the other way around, the guys in the audience would just be popping wood and muttering to each other about what they`d like like to do to the singer. I`m not sure which behaviour is more embarrassing, but the female is sure louder.

@Paperduck: You may be on to something. I like your moth analogy, in particular.

Part of what I find interesting about the whole phenomenon is how completely beside themselves the girls sometimes become, to the point of, well, hysteria. Check out the girl in the salmon-colored top at the start of this clip and how she reacts to a surprise visit by The Biebster (watch for about one minute to see all of her reaction):

Squrlz my analogy to why teen girls do this is everything around them (friends, being center stage, center of attention, etc.) indicates to the girl`s primal instincts they are alpha males. This makes the girl need to demonstrate they are suitable mates, but they can`t so they cheer louder, scream, cry, and go apepoo crazy... like a moth that is trying to instinctually navigate using moonlight at night, but rams into the light bulb over and over for hours.

Also: The parents of the blonde girl (with the towel) are doing an amazing job. I say that because:

(1) She doesn`t know the crying girl, but seeing the girl in obvious emotional distress, she gives the girl a hug;
(2) She`s smart enough to offer a bit of advice to the girl when she suggests, "You can write him lots of letters";
(3) Although she has Bieber`s towel, she isn`t hysterical or even carried away; she seems to consider the whole thing fun but also is aware it`s a little silly;
(4) She protects the towel from the other girl ("it`s mine"), but at the same time lets her sniff it;
(5) Her eyes, when she looks back at the reporter and laughs, say "Yes, she is a little crazy, isn`t she?"

LOL; great kid.

That`s got to be an illness, right? To be so incredibly obsessed with someone you`ve never met or even talked to?

@Kain: Thanks. That *was* good and did shed some light, especially the psychological aspects.

@squrlz: I was curious too, so i googled it.

It`s not an actual study. More like armchair philosophy. But i think it still shed a little bit of light on the subject.

Also, the following translation of the Danish (found on YouTube) is helpful.

Reporter: Why are you crying?
Crying Girl: Because it`s ending now and I won`t be able to see him for a long time.
Other Girl: You can send him a lot of letters.
Crying Girl: Yes... now I can`t find my friends.
Reporter [to other girl]: And what do you have in your hand?
Other Girl: This is Justin Bieber`s towel.
Crying Girl: OMG! DID YOU GET IT?!
Other Girl: Yes, it`s mine.
Crying Girl: Can I touch it?
Other Girl: You can smell it.
Crying Girl: OMG!

I`ve always found this adolescent girl hysteria thing interesting. I`m serious. What`s going on psychologically? Are the sex hormones flooding the body to such an extent that the girl loses control of her emotions? What hormones are they? Why is this behavior seen only in females, not males, and only in females of a certain age? If it`s hormones, are they hormones that stop being produced after puberty? Does the girl have to be in the presence of a lot of other girls for it to occur? If so, why is that?

Someone needs to do some studies on this.
Did you just try to compare the Beatles to Bieber? Seriously?
It is a sad fact that our schools no longer teach people to think critically, and it is sad that I have to reply to such a question. The answer is no I did not try to compare the Beatles to Bieber.

I was just pointing out that hysterical (look that word up and it`s etymology (you`d better look up etymology too before you jump to more unwarranted conclusions)) fan behavior is nothing new.

At least you can easily tell idiots from normal people. Having visited a bieber concert should become a part of your record, like being arrested.
