British Leftists Celebrate Thatcher`s Death, Riot

EXTENSIVE article about the actions of the "British Left" in response to her death. Typical.

5Cats: "No doubt many will SAY this about her, but it`s baseless (in my opinion)"

You call it "baseless" because it doesn`t jive with YOUR baseless opinion? LOL! How about educating yourself? Maybe looking up some references? Like this? ("Margaret Thatcher was sexy, and she used her sex appeal as a weapon to disarm male colleagues") Or this? ("Margaret Thatcher exuded a strong, sexual charisma. And she was not shy about using it.")

5Cats, don`t you get tired of being so wrong so often? And NEVER having the guts to admit it?

Feels fairly disrespectful to me. I don`t agree with a lot of what she did or stood for, but she hasn`t had any influence on politics for years, its not like anything is going to change now she is dead. I feel bad for her family, I wouldn`t know how to take it if a family member died and people were rejoicing.
Maybe you`re just not used to a president that thinks before he speaks instead of just shooting from the hip.
What I`d like is a president who has actual principles so he doesn`t have to stop and think about what he is saying 3 or 4 times before he can finish a sentence.

When Obama stammers it means one thing: he`s lying.

@madduck: Well, I`m glad it came from "elsewhere" but you DO understand that it`s the ESSENCE of misogyny?

Man does it? He has skill and talent! A leader!
Woman does it? She used sex to trick men! The slut!

No doubt many will SAY this about her, but it`s baseless (in my opinion) unless there`s an orgy video... :-O

For The Record: Dolly Parton used to -play- the "I`m just a dumb girl" routine, then pull the rug out from her opponents! She became known as the toughest negotiator in the music industry...

"Queen Bee" Syndrome you mention is VERY real! Women are harder on their female employees than men are, it`s been documented countless times. Why? If I knew that I could write a PHD thesis...

They should bury her in the empty fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square, not because she deserves the honour of being buried in a national landmark, but because it has a big enough dance floor. Also, if the riot police turn up to a party, they are going to meet with some reaction. Bristol is a sink city, full of under privileged people demonised by Thatcher and every government since, and the Daily Mail, which in case you didn`t notice `Murica, is a joke newspaper over here, people read it to laugh at it. May she rot in hell.

5cats- cannot for the life of me remember who said it, but, what he said was JUST that ( came from a male MP- ex cabinet I think). He said she had the most amazing cornflower blue eyes and husky voice- that she was very very sexy and used that to get her own way.. as I said, she had a male cabinet, was known to dislike women. I do know women like this as a friend said `Queen Bees` - women who like to be top of the heap. But the bit about her using her wiles did not come from me...

"Obama = Gifted Orator. (despite the stammer?)"

The stammer (which happens mostly when he is speaking freely) is just him pausing to think a little more on what he is about to say. I admit it doesn`t sound good but it is a hell of a lot better than a president that would "um" and "ah" to fill in the thinking pauses. That would sound really bad. Maybe you`re just not used to a president that thinks before he speaks instead of just shooting from the hip.

@madduck: That is one of the MOST blatantly misogynistic things I have EVER read! You`re suggesting she used "feminine wiles" to manipulate males? What about her female cabinet members? Was she AC/DC?
I prefer to think she won support for her honesty, policies, proven record of success and INTELLIGENCE. Not her titties...

Obama = Gifted Orator. (despite the stammer?)
Thatcher = Oral Persuasion? (Like Lewinski?)
Sickening, I am very disappointed...

What really gets me, is that no one in those photos looks old enough to have actually lived through the Thatcher years, yet they go out to the streets and publicly celebrate her death. Did they bother to protest the Iraq war? Probably not. Austerity measures? Nope. Could they explain in detail what Thatcher actually did to piss them off? doubtful. It`s just another excuse to burn stuff and fight with police, like the London riots last year.

I cannot fact check reliably- as I said, the stuff I had got destroyed ( although how much help it would have been is also open) and as you can imagine all I get off the `net at present is recent and polarised. However- here this most certainly began under Thatcher, that is memory and life events making me so sure. In `81 if I wanted to buy on credit for over a weeks wage ( about £70) I had to provide payslips for 6 months and get my husband to countersign or a man to act as guarantor. By 84 I got a mortgage for 45k with a few weekly payslips and a check for ccj`s. That, along with the right to buy made house prices start to go bananas. like a runner out of the blocks things went nuts during the 80`s. Okay- some would have happened anyway, just as some of the decline under Thatcher would have happened anyway- she was not superhuman, but her drive to privatise absolutely everything cannot be underestimated. She reckoned the oil revenues would prop up unemployment for a while

Quite literally, banks were forced to be "innovative" with their lending policies in order to meet the forced quotas. Banks did not want this because their underwriting and lending standards were being forcibly loosened which is inherently risky. In order to justify this (since subprime loans are risky for the lender), the government implicitly suggested that they would assist the banks by buying up the subprime loans (GSE`s) and covering any losses.

Next, in the early 2000`s, the Fed forced interest rates to exceedingly low percentages (I think they were less than inflation for some or most of that period). An interest rate that is less than inflation means the lendee actually increases wealth by taking the loan. Thus, we have the artificial demand.

These were the major mechanisms involved in our housing market collapse – good intentions, but bad policy.

Are you sure that there was not another regulatory player at the time? I am admittedly ignorant of the regulations outside of the US, but I can explain the similar situation we had.

Our bubble was caused by artificial supply and demand.

Basically, starting back with Carter, Congress felt like everyone should own a home regardless of their ability to pay for it. The real trouble began in the `90s though as HUD began setting explicit lending targets for the GSE`s; by 2005, over half of loans purchased by the GSE`s were required to be from borrowers with incomes below the median in their areas. Thus, we have an artificial supply.

Additionally, in `95, the CRA was adjusted to require banks to prove that they were making the required amounts of subprime loans.

Off the top of my head, the papers I need to be more precise got scrapped after a fire, so... she got rid of the regulations on getting a mortgage, making it far, far easier to borrow money. If memory serves you could get 5 x annual salary on a 1% deposit whereas previously it had been a much higher deposit and less borrowing. She allowed banks to do mortgages and all of a sudden it was quite easy to buy a house ( I know this, I did). you did not have to provide much proof of your ability to repay money either... which lead to the sub prime market which went tits up a while back- bad loans being sold on, sold on in a chain with banks not being at all in the know about what they had bought. Credit was, all of a sudden, easy to get- credit cards, bank loans, mortgages were available to buy houses, cars, carpets - stuff that up until then you had to save for.... of course, it had to be paid back. The way people lived changed quite fast too, on the back of all this came overpaid or insecu
and that is why we have the deregulated banking system which caused the current crisis
Can you explain this further for me? I have heard many accusations suggesting that some "deregulation" caused the housing market trouble and I would like to know which specific "deregulations" you are referencing. So, if you would be so kind, please let me know the specific regulations that were changed and how that led to the crash.

If you`d like, I can be very specific naming several regulations and policies that led to the housing market collapse - because government regulation was the actual culprit.

As a very proud member of the British left..yeah, quite a few people celebrated. A few louts far too young to remember Thatcher took it too far and kicked off. Nothing you can`t see after a match, and deplorable but not as bad as depicted. This is the Mail remember. We do not celebrate the death of the old frail woman who died in a expensive hotel, but the final end of the woman who caused so much pain, caused misery and death, who killed our industry and who caused the crisis we are in now. The old bitch cast a long shadow and many of us wonder if, just possibly, this might act as a call to arms. We need to be active, to stop Cameron finishing what that evil woman began....

It is hard for those who don`t remember to quite understand- she was, by many accounts, very sexy- and used that to get her ( male) cabinet to do as she wanted. Her policies obviously were divisive, but I think the reason she spawns such ire is that fanatic pursuit of extreme policy despite human cost. You would look at her face when someone spoke against her- not pleasant- and in the end of course, even her own party had enough.

Kingdomecome- we could probably argue from dawn to dusk about the woman`s damage ( actually- I pretty much have been) BUT, heavy industry would have scaled down, and no doubt the unions needed some control, she simply went to far. She used our oil money to prop up the unemployment bill, she basically wanted to privatise absolutely everything. She was far too extreme and seriously vindictive- she would not be gainsayed- moderate was not a word she used. I believe that time has proven her wrong, because the basis of all her thinking was to let the markets have free reign, and that is why we have the deregulated banking system which caused the current crisis. Her social policies caused whole communities to die- and many have never come back, simply because of her insane belief in a free market to the expense of all else. She was notoriously hard nosed, surrounding herself with men who adored her, hated women, supported apartheid, she was inhumane and cruel.

The people celebrating are all about my age, as we were born in the aftermath of her "tirony" all we have are vague (most likely demonised) folk-memories from the media, we don`t really know anything much about her it is disgusting to celebrate her death.

"You guys have had soccer* riots."

@markust: * There`s been exactly 3 (three) riots over hockey in the past century.
Vancouver (home of tons of leftists)
Montreal X2 (home of French Speaking persons)

Now... how many sports riots has the USA had? Britain? France? Germany? Spain has one every WEEK!

@WhoDat: lolz! Vancouver has a soccer team too, but no one riots when they lose...

@madduck - heavy industry was on it`s last legs in the UK, the loss of it is not down to her, although she is an easy scapegoat. Can you imagine an economy based on coal and steel right now? We would have pumped good money after bad trying to keep the industry alive and lost the fight long before now to cheaper alternatives. We would have nothing to replace it with and no money to try to find something. But she did have a good spitting image puppet so lets hate her, huh?

Most of the people `celebrating` were just drunken teenagers who weren`t even born when she was in power.
