oldollie - so are you claiming that all teachers are liberal? also since we are going this direction, what makes you believe that the people associated with the bombing didnt agree with some of the rights ideals? i bet they loved your lax gun laws. not to mention your hatred of airport security.
Not all teachers are liberal, but THESE teachers definitely are.

What makes me CERTAIN that the bombers don`t agree with the right on ANYTHING is their words and their actions. I have absolutely NOTHING in common with them or their twisted perverted world view. The were f***ing OBAMA supporters, for Christ`s sake!

And the guns they had were ILLEGAL in Mass. I`m sure they were comforted knowing that while they were shooting it out with the police, it was highly unlikely that an armed citizen would shoot them in the back (except, or course with a video camera).

And in case you haven`t noticed, NOBODY, likes airport security.

@Draculya: Naw! The boys were in another classroom. I`m thinking they were asking each other for kisses too...

Nonetheless, even if kissing hadn`t been coded as sexual advances, I would still not be comfortable with this activity. Because of the way the students were asked to participate (being told to comply), a student who is not comfortable for any reason (perhaps they are actually gay?) might find saying no to the activity just as awkward as submitting to the activity.

Ok. Fine. I have to add this. I understand that "kissing" is fine in itself. I can kiss other males and not be gay. However, a big part of the problem is the activity was using "kissing" as a stand-in for "sexual advances". When something that might be conventionally innocent gets coded as something more, the meaning of the activity changes.

This is a gross and insulting course for young students to be participating in. The rhetoric behind the lesson suggests that there is something wrong with being gay.

YES! THIS!! 110% agree!!

@carmium and @madduck: This Link from a less "reputable" site, gives some further details.

afik: ALL the girls were told to ask another girl for a kiss, and to say "No" in response.

I think this is a GOOD exercise!

TWO girls were instructed to go to the front of the class and "role play" as lesbians.

This is "questionable" unless they volunteered. Which I highly doubt, since it seems that one of them is the girl who is complaining...

1/4 of my family is French! There was a lot of kissing while I was growing up! I turned out OK...

"Perv!"

Or perhaps not? Lolz @panth753! I`m glad you appreciated my humour :-)

Gee, I read the whole thing and somehow totally missed where 8th graders were forced to act like lesbians.

Nobody was expected to kiss anybody. They were supposed to ask for a kiss and practice saying no. The "kiss" was used as an example because they believed it was inappropriate to talk about sex in an 8th grade setting (oh please, eighth graders know full well what sex is. If they don`t, something is wrong.)

They told one girl to ask for a kiss and another to say no to her. Yup...sounds like child abuse to me... *rolls eyes*

elkingo, have your kissed your parents? Your grandparents, or your children- is this sexual? If you always see a kiss as a sexual advance then, with respect, you may wish to speak to someone. Kisses and hugs may be a prelude to a sexual encounter- they may be a gesture of affection, and when dealing with kids it is less `icky` to ask a same sex friend for a kiss than an opposite sex class member. If you are teaching a child how to reject an advance, then they will be more comfortable if they role play with same sex class members- the teasing after group would be totally counter productive other wise.

In a state where 80% of high school graduates don`t know how to read, this sounds like a wonderful thing to concentrate on.

"O brave new world, That has such people in`t!"

So, if you actually read the details... the boys and girls were separated from each other and were attending anti-bullying workshops. The kids were role playing social scenarios and one of the scenarios involved declining a kiss from another person. They didn`t actually kiss, and the only reason it was girl on girl is because the sexes had been separated for the presentations.

But I`m sure the Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh types will go into their histrionic bit and claim it`s all a part of the evil gay agenda.

So, they want the girls to start wearing Doc Martens, ask to be treated equal(until it becomes too hard), and then start blaming men for their period?

"they were asked to ask a same sex class member for a kiss."

That is not acting gay somehow?

They were not `forced to act like lesbians`- they were asked to ask a same sex class member for a kiss. If you actually read the article it seems it was a workshop on being accepting. Amazingly kisses are a common way for humans to show affection and pleasure, we do not exclusively kiss the opposite gender. If parents actually object to this they should have their parenting card removed...
oldollie - are you just fishing for people to comment back? you claim they are liberal but what proof do you have? this is just as bad as the left claiming the right were to blame for the bombing.
No, you have it exactly backwards. Blaming this on liberals is like claiming Muslim jihadists were to blame for the bombing WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE EXACTLY RIGHT. You denying that this was perpetrated by liberals is like all the liberals who were trying to blame the bombing on the right WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE EXACTLY WRONG.

This isn`t rocket science.

@mykunter: I think the offending sentence has been corrected

"If they are required to..."

But yeah, editing is a lost art.

@elkingo: It`s a valid point: gays would never be "required to act straight" in a public school. But I think the lesson was to "de-stigmatize" homosexuality AND to learn how to say "No!" Which a lot of youths seem to not know how to do these days...

@WhoDat: I move in mysterious ways!
I also suggested another story about a "big head" :-)

Red Hook isn`t too far from where I grew up in Poughkeepsie, maybe a 30 minute drive north. It`s pretty small, right where the more rural part of NY starts. I went to click the link, saw it was the Pok Journal and said "WTF? Why is 5Cats reading the newspaper from my hometown?"

Let me rephrase that last part:

I mean to say, I find it offensive they ask straight people to mock gay people in order to prove a point.

I wouldn`t do that because I wouldn`t want my gay friends "acting" straight. It is just degrading and insulting.

As usual, SOMEONE left off the additional link:

More Coverage Here!

Just ignore the source ;-) That`s why it`s not the main link, OK?

Now For The Record: I see nothing wrong with this "anti-bullying" exercise! Sure it would have been better to warn the parents ahead of time (if they really objected they could pull their daughter out, no harm done) but by itself it`s not a bad lesson.

Getting 2 of the girls to "act like lesbians" in front of the class is a bit much though, unless they volunteered, which is doubtful...

If I was asked to request a kiss from a dude, I would make a scene. Because: first, I don`t find males attractive, and I would have to "pretend" to be gay in order to ask, and I would do a bad job of it because I know jack diddly sh|t about being gay.

Secondly, I find it offensive that being gay is "unwanted social pressure and attention". Whatever the cause of this "class" it is absolute rubbish.

Me too. Tell us, @markust123, what the hell is the point of this exercise?

For f*cks sake, schools can`t even teach the difference between there, their and they`re anymore...

This is absolute garbage!

No, that`s not what they were asked to do. They were asked to learn how to say no and get out of an unwanted situation. Wow, nice when the proof is right there and still just misrepresented as if it wasn`t. :-(

I think that this course enrichment workshop sounds wonderful. Of course it`s going to be awkward for the girls but better for it to be awkward for them in practice, with peers than when they`re older, having difficulty establishing barriers with lovers and potentially going way farther than they had wanted.
