15 Over-Used Movie Poster Cliches [Pic]

To signify that their movie is a “big independent film” they always go for a super-saturated golden yellow.

There is only one color of dress for romantic comedies. Have you “red” my mind?

The ultra-dramatic back-shot, for the lonely hero and probably vigilante.

Clearly the enormous, looming eye is mostly for horror films. The better to see you with, my dear.

Movie posters about animals tend to be sapphire. And hey, a huge white moon cant hurt.

The blindfolded hero must face justice.

Tom Cruise has a very attractive profile.

Photobooth faces with overlaid text denotes that the main character is the most important thing in the film.

How do you properly express your tough-love relationship? By standing back to back!

A silhouette in front of the ocean, with faces floating in the clouds, all in pastel colors? This movie will be really touching and poignant.

Any black and white poster with a shock of red flame is trying to tell you its an action flick, and that you can expect more than four explosions

whereas the black and white with red block text is more comic book-esque, high style with a weaponry focus.

If someone is running down the street, that street should probably be blue. Also your movie should probably be some kind of thriller.

posters dominated by faces created out of film elements but you cant deny that seeing them all lined up like this takes a little of the air out of them.

Um, these movies probably have a sex scene. Or at least one hot girl.

There are only so many ways to make a poster eye catching and set a mood, but it obviously works!

Well, to be fair, if Little Miss Sunshine`s movie poster was any color but yellow, that would be a weird missed opportunity.

Tomcats (1977) Apparently based on a true story of 4 dudes who go on a rape & murder spree...
    The Tuscon Killings Yikes!

Many of these are BAD movies! I guess that`s because MOST movies are bad...

    But Not these two!

(The cartoon, NOT the Hollywood movie!)

Cat People (1942) is NOT a "rom-com" it`s a classic horror film, and highly recommended!

Not many animals in this film... except the "human" kind...

    Best... Movie... Ever!

I`m impressed! That`s a literal visual essay, and the point is well made.

One sheet`s are a visual language. It`s how a person makes a decision on what to see without watching previews.

Generally, they tell you who`s in it and what type of picture at-a-glance.

Some of these do deviate from the overall "trend".

PFFFTT!! Tom Cruise is a pathetic little man. I can never see why they cast him as some sort of bad ass action hero.

5Cats, it`s not about the movies, it`s about the posters.
@kitteh9: Well yeah, I get that. But I don`t know how an example of a "romantic comedy" has a HORROR movie poster.
And There`s the blue colour, the moon, no animals except -you- humans! :-)
    I`m just sayin...

But yeah, there`s 100% for sure a pattern in movie posters. A "formula" even... Template? Cookie Cutter?

@Dead_Kittens: Most movies have multiple posters, almost all of them in fact. So perhaps some "picking & choosing" is involved, but it doesn`t invalidate the theory at all.

James Cameron`s Avatar was a fantastic horror.
@aquaman1227: LMAO! It was "a horror" but it was intended to be "epic action adventure"... :-D

Just like Eddie Murphy`s "Pluto Nash" was "a horror" too, but intended to be "sci-fi action comedy".

@kitteh9: Did YOU make this? If so it`s even more awesome! (Don`t get me wrong, I liked it! 4.0!)

I wasn`t aware that "Joe Dirt" was a "big independent film".
