Student refuses? Gets suspended, now FAU is charging him, not the Prof, of course!

Trolling trolling trolling...
@furryblob is trolling!
(Rawhide tune)

Seriously? I mean really.

On the other hand, LOTS of lefties have faked "news" to get attention (or whatever).
>The woman who carved a word on her own face and blamed the Republicans (or the Tea Party).
>The guy who hung himself and staged it to blame the Tea Party.
>The lesbian who got hateful and threatening letters... from herself!
>The "Hanging Obama" which was put up by... Democrats.

It seems like you`re pointing the finger at the mirror there @furryblob...

I`m willing to bet this never happened at all. Just something made up so rightwingers can complain about being a `victim` and how the evil liberals are out to get them.

If so, then what was the purpose of the exercise, and why pick that name? Would people say the same if they were asked to write Obama?

markust: "Yeah, the news is not reporting on it because it is sensationalism and not news"

Then why does the liberal media have no problem reporting sensationalist crap that is liberally biased? This isn`t about `sensationalism` this is about a consistently liberal media bias.

Come on, the whole Liberal Media mantra that is pushed daily by Fox News and Rush Limbaugh is just a ruse so they can sell lies. "Here`s something the liberal media won`t report on." Yeah, the news is not reporting on it because it is sensationalism and not news (Although I still look at FoxNews.com daily because sometimes they do report on actual news that other stations aren`t reporting on, or they fill in the rest of the story).

That sounds really closed minded. How do you expect to grow and learn if you don`t look at both sides of an issue (from respectable sources of course)? I`m not kidding when I say I look at CNN.com, FoxNews.com and MSNBC.com every day. I want to look at how each side is presenting a story so I can get to some semblance of the truth. If you stick with just one side you are being consistently lied to. That does explain some of the crazy things you say though - especially since Breitbart is one of your "news" sources.

Sort of like, I don`t know... IAB!

Are you seriously defending an opinion blog 5Cats? The day you stop presenting these opinion blogs as news and facts is the day I will shut up about it. Opinion blogs have zero accountability yet you believe them because they tell you exactly what you want to hear. Why don`t you challenge yourself and learn something outside of your conservative bubble. You`ll find the world is not so black and white.

@WhoDat: That`s true! And possibly the "lesson" in the lesson, eh? That a little piece of paper is NOT the embodiment of the Savior. And a valid lesson that might be... IF it were the one being taught.

@markust: So your one-sided piece is OK, but MY one-sided piece is biased? Am I getting that correct? Despite my source being "an opinion blog" and YOUR source being "a news outlet", and they -essentially- report the exact same things? Mine is "bad" while yours is "good".
You say stuff like this a lot, you know...

@synaw: Well, YOUR suggestions are SO MUCH BETTER than mine! @FancyLad should just hand you the keys to IAB and be done with it.

Well, I guess this comes just in time for the week`s stomp on gay rights themes being played out by conservative radio and news outlets all over the place. I`m not sure which is worse (actually I am)? Stomping on a piece of paper (kinda like a comic of Muhamed, eh?) or actually engaging in behavior that`s led to bullying, death, suicide of actual, real people?

Wait a minute, do you think "one sided" means that they are taking a side? God that would be hilarious. One sided when it comes to journalism means only showing one side of the story. You read Brietbart. You should be familiar with this.

"What part of my link was "one sided"

The whole thing. Except for a short apology from the College there was no other side of the story on your link. They actually went out the way not to have another side of the story. You are so partisan you can not tell anymore when a story is one sided. Take off you blinders and join the world of learning.

This sentence pretty much shows that Yahoo "News" site isn`t taking sides, "FAU officials are having a terrible time keeping their story straight regarding this kerfuffle." Plus they used the word kerfuffle which is pretty awesome.

Have fun arguing about whoever your imaginary wizard friend is and if it`s wrong to stomp on a piece of paper that has their name written on it, or whatever the f*ck this ridiculous argument is about. Think about this, you`re a bunch of grown men & women arguing about stomping on a piece of paper that has someone`s name it, hahaha!!! I have much better things to do with my time.

"Stomp gays? Stomp blacks? Jews? Is that different?"

Yes, that is different. Like I said in my earlier comment, Jesus is just a name. When you talk about gays your referring to the sexual orientation of an entire group of people. When you talk about blacks you`re talking about an entire race of people, not just some dude named Jesus... who may or may not be the same guy named Jesus who my neighbor employs as a gardener.

Wait, the link YOU (@markust) provided was incredibly one sided? What?

"FAU officials are having a terrible time keeping their story straight regarding this kerfuffle."
From your link, 9:40:53 AM, below.

Aside from the FAU`s "excuses" for the SECOND suspension, what part of my link was "one sided"? Which facts were "omitted"? Just because it didn`t detail the FAU`s reasoning, or provide the text from the textbook that the Prof may OR MAY NOT have followed?

It`s AN OPINION BLOG! Not "Mainstream News" so guess what? It just MIGHT be opinionated... but your "Yahoo News" essentially tells the exact same story... as do all the other "news" outlets.

While I don`t know the point of this "exercise" I don`t get why the Mormon got pissed. Jesus is just a name, and a fairly common name in some Hispanic & Christian regions of the world.

Whenever someone says the name Jesus the first thing I do is correct them, it`s pronounced "hay-soos" not "gee-zus". Then I ask them how they know Jesus and if it`s the same Jesus who happens to be my neighbor`s gardener. (Yes, he really is the gardener, and he`s Mexican)

Chill the f*ck out people, it`s just a name, same as writing "Bob" or "Dave" or "John Doe" on a piece of paper and stomping on it.

@Kain1: afaik this is the "timeline":

>The day it happened he complained to his professor.
>2 days later he complained to the department
>He was then suspended from that class for "uttering threats"
>At this point I think the media was contacted, by whom? Most likely the student (or his lawyers...)
>FAU issues an apology, says no one is being punished.
>FAU then fully suspends the student and prohibits him from being on campus OR talking to his classmates

They can prevent him from speaking to his classmates? Like THAT`s constitutional! (Only a Judge can order that...)

It was an absolutely stupid and offensive "exercise". This forced multiculturalism BS needs to stop. Had a muslim student been asked to step on the name mohamed or allah there would`ve been riots, it would`ve made headline news on all TV outlets.

So, what did we learn from this exercise?

People are having problems stomping on a piece of paper with the name of Jesus written on it.
Some people have major problems with it.
Some people have no metacognition skills.

IAB is refusing to let me link this (I tried!), but another report says:

Florida Atlantic University has issued an apology in which FAU states: "this exercise will not be used again".

But they`re still throwing the book at the student.

Question: Were the students also asked to write the names of Buddah? Moses? Mohammed? Allah? No? I wonder why not...

Link From Within Your Link

The problem is not "the exercise" itself, there`s POSSIBLE justifications for it, I`ve never said anything to the contrary.
The PROBLEM is that after the student complained? He was suspended.
They FAU apologized, claiming "no one" was being punished.
THEN they punished him!

@markust: Can I call you "I never even bother to read the links I provide"?

It clearly says that the "problem" started when the student REFUSED to do it. It wasn`t until 2 days later, AFTER the student complained, that he suddenly got suspended for "making threats".
Such as: "Don`t do that again" or "You`ll be hearing from me". O_o Obvious terrorism!

THEN the school apologized.

THEN the school outright suspended him and forbid him from contacting classmates.

So where EXACTLY did I "get only one side" of the story?
You ASSUME the Professor followed the textbook instructions to the letter, based on... nothing.

I don`t mind answering questions, but when you accuse me of something, then provide a link which PROVES ME CORRECT? I have to wonder, WTF Dude?

OF COURSE there`s a "logical explanation" for the exercise, I NEVER suggested otherwise.

I think I`ll start calling you One Sided 5Cats. If anyone wants the whole story here it is.

This is the lesson from the manual that accompanied the teachers textbook, "Have the students write the name JESUS in big letters on a piece of paper," advises the manual. "After a brief period of silence, instruct them to step on the paper. Most will hesitate. Ask why they can`t step on the paper. Discuss the importance of symbols in culture."

You couldn`t have found a more biased article? I just don`t think it`s biased enough, tbh.

I wonder how many facts about the case have been left out, or what the professor actually had to say about the whole thing. Sadly, i don`t care enough to find out.

I`d really be interested in hearing how Prof Poole would justify the assignment. It does seem like an exceptionally bizarre thing to ask of a person but one could surmise that in the class of Intercultural Communication students of different cultures would react to the assignment in different manners. It could be an interesting way to exemplify the precise communication barriers that occur in cross-culturalism. Doubtless the student could have simply refused to do the stomping and explained why as a part of his assignment...I feel as if the articles could supply so much more elucidation.

This is actually a "follow up" to a previous item (which is linked) since there`s new developments.

It was during "Holy Week" Oh! The irony!

"Professor Poole is vice-chairman of the Democratic Party of Palm Beach County" = no surprise there!

But the Florida Atlantic University (FAU) first suspended the student, then apologized to him, but he is now " brought up on academic charges by the school and may no longer attend class".

WTF?

He refuses to stomp on something, and they toss him out of the school? AFTER they apologize? What a joke...
