"Why should everyone know every single "clubs" presidents name?!"
Because it`s common knowledge? If someone doesn`t know what a pope is then there`s really something wrong with them.

I could maybe understand not knowing the Pope`s name, but not even knowing what the Pope is seems...weird. Unless you live in a third world country where you have bigger problems to worry about than a dude in a big hat.

Jeez, I didn`t even see the second quote to begin with. I thought we were making fun of the first one.

Well, I don`t know what you call the leader of the Anglican church...unless it is Queen Elizabeth II herself. So if these people are Anglican, seems fair enough. Hell, my wife`s family are Methodist and I don`t know what the head of the Methodist Church is called, either.

PS - in Spanish, the word for "Pope" is identical to the word for "potato" except "Pope" is masculine (El Papa) and "potato" is feminine (la papa) so all the Spanish-languague channels here are proclaiming in their headlines "Tenemos Papa" - "We have a Potato"

It can also mean father. Also the two words are pronounced slightly different. There`s a slight inflection there that most non-native speakers don`t pick up on. If you made that joke to a spanish speaker, they would roll their eyes at you because you`d be making a terrible pun.

Also no one, except for kids and people with a terrible sense of humor, thought of potatoes when the pope was picked.

Look think about like this, when you hear the words `soap opera`, you don`t imagine a bunch of singing soap bars.
