Anyone know the story? Did they charge the cop the with reckless driving? It`s obvious the guy filming wasn`t breaking the speed limit as he would have been stopped. What`s up with that?

It`s not the "passing" lane. It`s the highway, and the speed limit is in place for a reason. regardless of this cops actions, obey the traffic laws. If you can`t, then prepare to face the consequences. I too brake check idiots that can`t obey the speed limit. If you can`t obey the laws then perhaps you shouldn`t be driving. I`ll gladly take on anyone that wants to pull of to the side of the road when they`re driving too fast, tail-gaiting, or in general being an idiot with a two ton weapon & endangering everyone else on the road because they think their priorities are more important than the laws put in place in this country.

First off this driver was tailgating the cop. The general rule is to stay at least 2 seconds away from the back bumper of any vehicle on the highway.

What the cop did after that however was absolutely the biggest douche move, on the highway, that I`ve seen in decades.

Brake checking and being a self righteous douche is far more dangerous behavior than going 10-15 over the speed limit on an interstate or other limited access highway.

Huey: You`re not a cop, it`s not your responsibility to meet out justice on the highway. What you`re doing and what this douchebag cop did is called aggressive or careless driving and can get you thrown in jail, fined and even get your license suspended.

Drive defensively and let the idiots go, it`s not your job to try and stop them.

The reward is that occasionally you`ll see one of these idiots stopped by a cop, flashing lights and all. Then you can get the last laugh.

However in this case, the both of them were in the wrong.

Just the wrong attitude to have, Remember it`s jail before bail and the cops will have custody of all your belongings while you`re in the cooler. And it`s not hard to manipulate a smart phone, and delete your video, through the thin plastic bag they put it in. After that you`d be thoroughly screwed.

    Huey-"It`s not the "passing" lane."

    Actually, yes it is.

Most states have a `Keep Right` law, forbid continuously driving in the left lane or have laws that a vehicle SHALL be driven in the right lane EXCEP when overtaking and passing.

Basically it boils down to this: No matter what speed you`re doing, if you`re in the left lane and someone is approaching from the rear, it`s the law that you move to the right.

Huey-"I too brake check idiots that can`t obey the speed limit."

Which make you, too, a `dick`.

    piperfawn, don`t be a weirdo.

This is largely meaningless because we don`t know how fast they were going and what the speed limits were. If the cop in the left lane was going the speed limit, it`s ok. The cop`s douchey move at the end was cancelled out by the rather aggressive tailgating in the beginning.

Also, and listen up piperfawn, it`s your fault if you rear end somebody. He was too busy filming and not busy enough driving defensively.

Smagboy - we have no idea about the speed limit. The cop would`ve had to have his radar on him also to even know.

Car accidents kill, I believe, over 30,000 a year in this country. Let`s have a national discussion over that and promote responsible driving.

Andrew, I`m all for having a discussion about safe driving! I just meant that the cop could have stopped him if he`d been braking the speed limit, and, since they were going the same direction, he wouldn`t need a radar gun, he could have just used his speedometer to check that, right? I mean, at least enough to flash him and pull him over. I`m only siding the film guy re: the brake checking move. Which was effed up. Otherwise, looks like there was a lot of douchery on both sides.

Yeah, that cop`s being a dick! NY State Troopers do sh*t like that on the Thruway between NYC & Albany all the time. Outside of the city the speed limit is 65 mph and I always see them cruising in the passing lane at 60 mph. It drives me crazy, especially when there are a lot of trucks around and it`s damn near impossible to get around them sometimes. I always pass them when I get the chance but I`ve never seen or heard of one of them doing this.

And cops wonder why they make no money ( I know a couple of cops that make just above minimum wage).... It`s because most people only have negative experiences with cops. How many of us have ever been pulled from a burning building? Or saved in the knick of time from an armed assailant by a cop? Not many. So when it comes time for the voters to go to the polls and approve a decent living for these a$$holes, it`s tough not to think about stuff like this.

Police do this all the time on I-80 through New Jersey. They often slow traffic down because there is an accident ahead, or some other blockage of flow. It makes sense to pace the oncoming traffic rather than shut the entire highway down.

The guy was driving way too close to the cop. I suspect once he passed him he was also speeding.

Here in Germany, that wouldn`t have happened. The cop wouldn`t have done what he did (holding up a lane and then brake testing), and the guy wouldn`t have been speeding near a cop.

"he wasnt driving that close to the cop"

I sincerely hope you don`t hold a driver`s licence yourself, because he was absolutely driving far too close, and should have been pulled over for it. The offence in the UK would be "driving without due care and attention" I believe. The US no-doubt has a similar offence to cover tailgating.

I mean...seriously...do you really think he left a reasonable stopping distance in front of him? My god you scare me.

"@musuko42 i do have a licence and keep a bigger distance than that. but that guy wasnt aggresive or something."

Glad to hear that you keep a larger distance. Remember the chant: "Only a fool breaks the two second rule". If you can`t say that sentence in full at normal talking speed in the time between the car in front passing a point in the road and your car passing it, then you`re too close.

You don`t have to be aggressive to fall foul of the law. If you`re in the UK, I suggest you have a read (note, no mention of aggression):

    Careless, and inconsiderate, driving.

    3. If a person drives a motor vehicle on a road without due care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road, he is guilty of an offence.

this verys from state to state

Colorado Statutes 42-4-1013. Passing lane - definitions

    (1) A person shall not drive a motor vehicle in the passing lane of a highway if the speed limit is sixty-five miles per hour or more unless such person is passing other motor vehicles that are in a nonpassing lane or turning left, or unless the volume of traffic does not permit the motor vehicle to safely merge into a nonpassing lane.

    (2) For the purposes of this section:

    (a) "Nonpassing lane" means any lane that is to the right of the passing lane if there are two or more adjacent lanes of traffic moving in the same direction in one roadway.

    (b) "Passing lane" means the farthest to the left lane if there are two or more adjacent lanes of traffic moving in the same direction in one roadway; except that, if such left lane is restricted to high occupancy vehicle use or is designed for left turns only, the passing lane shall be the la

@dm2754: "and that not a "passing lane" it a two lane road. you only have a "passing lane" on a one lane road."
Horrible grammar notwithstanding, that is one of the stupider statements I have seen lately. How can there be a `passing lane` on a one lane road? There is only one lane each way! Are you calling the oncoming lane a `passing lane`??

Even your own c`n`p defines it for you, numbnuts. "(b) "Passing lane" means the farthest to the left lane if there are two or more adjacent lanes of traffic moving in the same direction in one roadway;" Did you happen to notice there are TWO "adjacent lanes of traffic"? And that they are "moving in the same direction"? On "one roadway"? Wouldn`t that, by your own reference, make the left lane the `passing lane`?

And you can "bet the cop was doing the speed limt" but I`d bet otherwise. If the cop WERE doing the speed limit, the other driver a) would probably have not been so aggro, at least not to a cop, and b) would most definitely have been ticketed after zooming past the cop like that. If the cop could have ticketed, he most likely would have. Since he couldn`t, he simply defaulted to his normal "prick mode" and nearly caused a wreck.

"this verys from state to state"
    California recently changed it.
You cannot be in the far left lane unless you are passing. You`re not meant to drive in it.

Of course, no one pays the least bit of attention to that. Just like Trucks don`t go over 55 mph {law}, no one drives while talking on cell phones, and you never see a dog on the drivers lap.
