That fake action was hideous. No self respecting graphic designer will use that or even be tempted by it. Also, why do they feel the need to remind the artist that they just need to go back to undo the changes. Who would not know to do that if their job all day is to do these things and who wouldn`t check the action to see what it does and how it works before using it. and who uses downloaded actions anyway. I would assume professionals have a collection of thier own made actions that they use daily. This advert annoys me more than it probably should

    Dear women,

Photoshop doesn`t create beauty. You gotta starve yourself, torture yourself in the gym, stick your finger down your throat, paint on makeup, spend on the latest fashion, get your hair did, do your nails, etc.....

Or...You can make me a sammich, and you`ll be beautiful for ever!

While I understand their concept, they are targeting the wrong people. Advertisers only produce what sells. Sex sells. It is society`s ideal images that need to change. How do you think stupid reality shows and pseudo celebrities make it big ----- you society! Yes, YOU.

edana- you say that- but largely due to photoshop the perceptions of young people have changed. They do not have any idea that the looks they covet are not achievable. Photos have always been retouched- I have a charming example on my wall circa 1910 with thighs enlarged. But the way photos are manipulated so heavily it has altered the standard of beauty far too much.

Wouldn`t it be far more effective to not hire art directors, etc., that use images that have been manipulated? I mean, if you`re serious and not just running a new ad/sales campaign designed to make folks think you`re all of a sudden ethical, so they`ll buy more of your crap.

All that "beautify" action looks like it did was take a natural skin tone and give it a slight sunburn or allergic reaction. No designer with any sort of self respect would download that. Nor would a professional use an action off of reddit.

Well if professional graphic designers download sketchy stuff from reddit to do their work, and then are so annoyed at having lost 10 seconds that they send in the original photo and get fired... And if that also happens to every subsequent designer who gets hired to replace the previous one... Well then the issue will have been fixed! gj!

As a professional graphic designer and as someone who dates a REAL skinny girl, and has dated REAL skinny girls, go f.uck yourself.

People want to look at the pinnacle of beauty as decided on by the majority. If a woman doesn`t fit into that because of genetics, or a lack of self discipline, fine. But don`t pander to them with bulls.hit like this.

I just find dove`s insinuation that only chubby girls are "real" to be in insulting. It reminds me of the way sarah palin thinks you are only a "real" american if you are a blue collar worker living in some small town in the middle of nowhere.

Skinny hot girls are just as real as fat ugly girls. There are just far far fewer of them.

I agree with Fwoggie, whence all the vitriol?

I mean aside from the fact that the commercialized North American standard of beauty doesn`t occur in nature and makes life miserable for most women. Oh and men too, lest I forget.

It`s beginning to happen more often for men as well. I remember a story about a guy who had all the symptoms, he ate too little and exercised too much because he was never big or muscular enough and at one point was hospitalized because he was near death. He had to go through therapy and a long recovery.

It really is bizarre how this can be pinned down to a specific geographic area too, North America. This only seems to affect us. It does not seem to happen in Europe for example. I wonder why? More cultural comfort? Less general fear of the natural body?

Bottom line is this speaks for the majority of us, actual corporeal humans, not plastic dolls with the dimensions of a corpse.

See that is the attitude that annoys me. It does occur. My girlfriend is 5`10" and 130 pounds. She eats healthy, never starves herself or diets, exercises routinely, and does yoga. Nothing about her lifestyle is drastic or unhealthy.

I`ve been around models a lot in my life and the stereotype of the girls that eat 3 grapes a day is mostly invented by hollywood to make girls that don`t look like that feel better about themselves.

Some people just have genetic gifts and sometimes a high metabolism is one of them.

If this is just a "stereotype to make girls who don`t look like that feel better about themselves" then they`re doing a piss poor job at it. There`s a reason why body dysmorphia is so prevalent in our culture, why an average woman can look in the mirror and believe she`ll never be good enough, and an average man feels he needs to be bigger and more muscle bound than that.

This doesn`t happen say in France, and don`t tell me it`s because the French simply don`t know what`s beautiful or sensual enough....

"then they`re doing a piss poor job at it."

Really? You just said: "doesn`t occur in nature". Which means every time you see a skinny girl you naturally assume she starves herself or makes herself throw up right? It is a negative reaction and stereotype. Similar to guys that work their asses off to be muscular and everyone just assumes they take steroids.

People feel the need to slam people and make assumptions about them to justify why they don`t look like that.

"body dysmorphia is so prevalent in our culture"

There may be lots of girls struggling with eating disorders, and it definitely is a problem worth addressing, but a trip to walmart or mcdonalds shows you that the vast majority have no issue whatsoever with being fat.

HG a barbie doll like physique does not occur in nature.

Yes there are thin women in nature, but barbie dolls with silicon breasts and noses and everything else do not. In fact that`s where I got the phrase "dimensions of a corpse", if you were to take barbie`s dimensions and try to apply then to a real woman that`s what you`d get, a cadaver.

And there are big women in nature too, and they get boyfriends and husbands just like the rest do. If they didn`t and love was only reserved for a certain size and shape, our species would go extinct.

Or to put it another way, yes there are men out there with big biceps and abs, and yet even a spare man with a small frame can be just as attractive.

It is only an emotionally impoverished individual who can`t see that...

No question that there is some atrocious over-photoshopping and that the media over-sexualizes women. But photoshop has become too much of a scapegoat. Photography has always been about manipulation. Everything that happens in a professional photo shoot is about making the model look her best. That goes down to the makeup, the clothing, the lighting, etc. Before you even get to retouching, you have to edit the shoot. Hundreds of bad shots get thrown away in favor of a handful of good shots. Ever notice how you look better from a certain angle?

Before there was photoshop, there was dodging and burning in the dark room, and before photography, painters were doing the same thing to their subjects.

No s.hit. It would look alien if it did. Nobody is photoshopping girls to "barbie doll physiques" so how does that enter the conversation?

Did you even watch the video? The "after" girl is not even remotely "barbie doll". They took a average sized girl and photoshopped her skinny. There are PLENTY of girls, including my girlfriend that are just as skinny as the "after" naturally. Most models already are.

Sure. If they are happy with their lives that is great. Nothing wrong with that at all. But not many people want to look at them or idolize them and if they did they would be on magazines and in movies. The companies aren`t evil, they give people what they want. If fat models sold cosmetics better than skinny ones I PROMISE you they would never pay people to touch up the photos.

No kidding. Really? I said "they" as in the pretend evil graphic designer the video was supposedly showing us being punkd, or whatever the point of this is. However, now that you mention it, Dove DID photoshop her skinny so that they could show us her being returned to normal. You think that is hidden camera on an actual designer`s computer?

"HG are you even familiar with the concept at all?"

    Let`s see.
I`ve been a graphic designer for 15 years.
    I`m Adobe certified in photoshop.
I teach photoshop workshops at an art college.
I have done extensive work with cosmetic companies and fashion companies...

I`m not talking about the "Business," I mean the whole social phenomena of the beauty myth and body dysmorphia.

Which is one of the reasons I brought up the male example of the phenomenon, because obviously none of this has any meaning at all until it happens to a man, then it becomes important.

(Although I believe if it shouldn`t happen to women then it shouldn`t happen to men either).

"the whole social phenomena of the beauty myth"

What myth are you talking about? The peaks of beauty in most people`s mind or even on pop culture lists aren`t carckhead skinny models. They are people like Kate Upton, Beyonce, Jennifer Lawrence, Scarlett Johansson, etc. Granted those girls are in great shape, but they are real people. Their images aren`t touched up the way this image was. They may remove blemishes and lines and make lighting adjustments or even some slight contouring, but nothing as drastic as this video purports.

So you might think they don`t exist in nature, but they do. I`ve met Olivia Wilde. I promise she is hotter in person than on any magazine cover.

Or the difference between stars and celebrities, who are on special diets, have to eat so much every hour or so and have personal trainers and the rest of the population?

I think you don`t empathize with people well, how else could you have gone for so long w/o even hearing of this dire social concern?

"verbosely explaining what constitutes the difference"

Here are some things that you said in reaction to this video:

"the commercialized North American standard of beauty doesn`t occur in nature"
"not plastic dolls with the dimensions of a corpse"
    "the difference between real women"

Now the "after" version in the video is about as thin as my girlfriend. So I can only assume you are saying she is not "natural", is "fake" and isn`t "real".

Do you not see how dismissive, divisive, and degrading that is? Saying that about thin girls is no different than saying insulting things about fat girls.

Whether you like it or not there are lots of perfectly healthy, natural, thin, beautiful girls out there. They might not be COMMON, but they are REAL and quite frankly it just comes off as petty and catty to say they aren`t.

Hg, put your sword down there Lancelot. I don`t even know your gf let alone have the impetus to insult her.

"Whether you like it or not"? We`re issuing ultimatums now? Ok ok, let me get in on this too, whether you like it or not, there is no factory manufactured woman (or man) who just plops off the assembly line like standardized car parts. I don`t particularly care which end of the natural curve these folks come in at, they`re all uniquely beautiful. (Cliche I know but we`re gonna have to work with the trope here).

I can only assume you can`t understand where I`m coming from because you don`t inhabit a woman`s body and don`t know what it`s like, even though I`ve tried to help you empathize with that repeatedly.

Walk a mile in our shoes, and don`t get so aggro the next time someone politely brings this up for conversation. Peace, outtie.

It is NOT about weight- being thin is easy, just eat less and do more, anyone can be thin. It is about proportions and skin, things like hair, teeth and skin are adjusted so carefully , waists rimmed and breats lifted so oddly that younger women honestly do not realise that it is not possible to look like that. which means that all over, many women are made bitterly unhappy because they feel they are not good enough- we fetishise looks. that is damn sad!!

HG, we get it, you have a model girlfriend... stop bringing it up every post when you are trying to make a point, it makes you look like a complete fool.

Also, the standards of beauty (especially female beauty) are incredibly skewed to reality. Just look at the posts about females every time a picture is posted here in I.A.M. Even innocent photos that have no sexual basis that contain women are automatically critiqued. Normal features of a woman`s body, like stretch marks, cellulite and freckles, spots and blemishes (all of which women of ALL weight`s and shapes generally get due to puberty etc) are seen as abnormalities. And again, because I know you will bring it up, I am not saying that ALL girls (like your girlfriend, for example) may have such things, and really, good for her, but many do and I don`t see how putting remarkably beautiful people up on a constant pedestal as an unreachable goal for the mere 99% can be seen by you as acceptable.

Boohoo poor women you all have it so hard.. I`m tired of this constant campaign to make thin, natural girls feel bad about themselves. Stop trying to turn the tables on people who are just born more attractive, so you`re not the best looking person, who cares? I know I`m not as good looking as those "photoshopped" models but I sure don`t give a f*ck. My wife had several fat friends and every time they got together they would talk down to her about her weight constantly just so they could feel better about themselves. It was pathetic.

No- it is nOT about making pretty girls feel like poo. My daughter is, by any standards, a seriously pretty and slim girl. She has a really good figure and is quite frankly, so stunning it is an issue. She cannot understand why she will NEVER look like her idols- and she can`t- because the looks she tries to achieve are not real. No one can look like that, no matter what they do. It causes her real issues, which is a problem....
