I wish that they still had these in modern play-structures. So much awesome stuff was phased out due to safety concerns.

Geogypsy: I agree, we had some awesome playground equipment in the 70`s & 80`s that was ripped up due to the safety ninnies.

I can remember helping my dad steer the car when I was 5, without a seat belt on. They`d hang any parent caught doing that now.

We take out all the playground equipment where a child might hurt themselves. Thus you get adults who have never had a serious injury. Then something important happens, like a car crash, and they just sit there crying over their boo-boo instead of taking what action needs to be taken. This isn`t a generation that pulls people out of a burning car, it`s a generation that sits in the burning car with a sprained ankle crying for someone to call an ambulance.

Safety concerns smothering kids? True. In my class we have boys of 15 who have never broken a bone. By coincidence two of them in the same week broke their first bones (a toe while rock-pooling and a wrist while cycling.) When they came into school with casts and crutches I threw a party for them, with the stated theme of `A boy doesn`t get to be a man without some pain`.

It`s not school policy and philosophically it might be difficult to defend but it works for me.

A few years ago I was strolling on the weekend and a kid from my school rushed up in a panic because his mate had fallen out of a tree and had a nasty forearm fracture with visible bone.
I called an ambulance and tended him until they arrived and went with him to hospital to wait for his mum to show. She was upset but when she started on `But why were you up a tree?` I had to politely intervene that up a tree is exactly where a 12 year old should be. The kid was fine with it once the morphine kicked in

    Happy doggie! Well trained too.

Everyone who owns a large, energetic dog should have one of these!! It oughta be the law!

Probably one of the few places a dog that size can run for any length of time anymore. Clearly a happy puppy!

securitywyrm: I agree, we are pussifying our kids in the name of safety. Instead we should be teaching them to be tough, not violent mind you, but resilient.

That thing would be perfect if it was a really fine grit sand paper and took care of his nails too.
