also if two ships get too close to each other they will come together no matter which way you turn.the only way out was for the BEKS carrier to back off ,let the other one get ahead then go around wider.BEKs carriers fault from what I saw.

Left and port have the same number of letters in them, port is also red just like the drink. easy to remember.

Gras = green right on starboard.

This was the most boring crash I ever saw. I really would even go so far as to say I don`t see the entertainment value at all. The most exciting thing was the annoying horn.

What a BONEHEAD move. Hey Gerry !! Must have been a former NASCAR driver trying to cut em off. Larger ship always has the right of way, incoming ship is staying to the left (port) of the outgoing ship. Little boat thinks it can just cut across the bow of a ship it has not passed. Little boat finds out that big boat has no brakes and little boat goes belly up. What`s the problem? Capt`n was ( as usual) drunk.

In his defense, the tanker was in his blind spot.
yet I still got Port and Starboard screwed up somehow.
@markust: Port and Left both have 4 letters! Starboard and Right have more than four.

Red goes on the left because the "R" in right and red repelle each other (like magnets).

OR: Green is "right" (starboard) and Red is "wrong" = "left" (port). From the French use of "gauche" eh? Not political :-)

@Smoothjc1: It`s a BULK Carrier, the word "bulk" really should be in the title...

ONE of those Captains is going to jail! I have no idea which one, but that sort of thing is inexcusable.

Richanddead:
Starboard comes from the Steerboard, as the earliest rudders were hung off the righthand side.

Port and starboard originates from ancient mariner days port is left side and is the side where the ship is docked, it`s facing the port, starboard is the right side facing the stars over the ocean.

I paddle shipping channels in a puny fiberglass canoe. Those fcukers are fast & only 6 minutes apart & in both directions. It`s a work out to swings between them.

"I have trouble with the whole port/starboard thing too."

I took the mandatory state required boating course a few weeks ago. I`ve been boating for thirty years. I know Red is the small word so it goes on the Left and Port is left because it is also the smaller word yet I still got Port and Starboard screwed up somehow.

Either asleep at the wheel,(but I doubt that, too close to the harbor), or he rammed them on purpose.
