It"s even more grim and sad than the scenes from Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay. No C-meat Sandwiches though.

Yes, all scary photos. Particularly the photo of the strawberries and lemons, chilling stuff.

The American prison system is merely an excuse for private companies to use slave labour, there is no excuse, or reason to treat non citizens as less human than citizens. Yes, I know the UK has a less than spotless record in this matter too, but it is no excuse.

Looks better than prisons that house american convicts here in the US. Pretty good treatment for people that torture, behead, light people on fire, stone to death, and drag their prisoners through the streets. Ah the religion of peace.

not so scary, no worse than any other prison

The design of the facility on the inside is no different than most facilities in the United States. Actually looks alot cleaner than most too.

I`m guessing the conditions are much much better than the terrorists afford their prisoners.

I work in a state prison. I agree with Crakrjak. Looks pretty good to me.

Would you rather stay at Guantanamo Bay or one of these fine prisons:

This looks better than most state penitentiaries in the US, Especially the food. Also most prisons here don`t use padded restraints.

A whole lot better than a dusty hole in the floor that you would get if captured by the detainees.

Plus the death rate is a lot higher.

Holy crap? Check out the prisons in the u.s., this is about the same, maybe cleaner.

Guantanamo Bay, Cuba is the only place you can be sure there are no Cubans.
How many people here have had a trial?
@madduck: Wiki says: 779 prisoners entered, 169 (or 167) remain. None have completed their trials. 8 have died (6 by suicide).

>Obama "suspended" the trials which were underway in Jan 2009. Years of work? Down the drain.
>In 2011 Obama ordered that the inmates could NOT be transfered to the US mainland OR other countries, effectively keeping them there forever.

Nice eh! How`s the "Nobel Peace Prize" hanging?

It looks cleaner than most American prison`s. I`d be interested to know statistics regarding violence; Inmate on inmate, inmate on guard, guard on inmate.
That would be interesting, seeing as most American prisons are incredibly violent and chock full of illicit drugs.
Padded cuffs, a library with books in a variety of languages, regional cuisine (even the Hague Hilton doesn`t have), a medical ward, security fences, and some bad-ass marines.

Honestly, this is better than most US prisons...

All of this. Yes, indeed.

@randomxnp

Because it`s cool to scapegoat the US. Even though we took the high road. Sympathise with the people who want to kill you and see where it gets you.

"The horror of Guantanamo Bay is that we`re holding people there without charging them. You can`t illustrate that with these pictures."

FoolsPrussia

Most of them were illegal combatants, subject to summary execution on the field of battle under the customs and practices of war.

So most of the inmates would have been summarily executed, either on the field of battle or after had they not been removed by American forces so as to be interrogated. Many of these executions would have been perfectly in line with European customs and practices of war as enshrined in the Geneva Conventions, and all in line with local customs of war.

So with this context, tell me again why this is such a scary place.

Honestly, this is better than most US prisons. My father was a dentist at JCI prison, BCF prison, and several others. Cells are about the same size, food sometimes has mold on it, no strawberries maybe an apple, furniture was stained with decades of human grease, and if you had a toothache you could only get an aspirin as per the state regulations.
Prison is not meant to be a soft and cuddly place and trials are reserved for citizens not enemy combatants, they receive military tribunals.

And in our military tribunals politics is kept out, enemy combatants are enemy combatants. Unlike the International Criminal Court which caters to countries they receive funding from and goes after Africa but still manages to lets people like Callixte Mbarushimana and Bahr Idriss Abu Garda go free.

Madduck, they are not citizens; therefore the right to a trial by peers does not exist.

"Have you seen the other pictures from Abu Ghraib? No justification."

Yes, I have. Have you seen what goes on when Islamic militants get their hands on an infidel or anyone who dares to oppose them? Ask them about not getting a trial, being held captive with little or no evidence and being treated unfairly. Oh wait... you can`t ask them... you can`t talk after your f*cking head has been chopped off. Standing on an MRE box while wearing a hood & blanket while people laugh at you ain`t sh*t compared to that.

Here`s a nice little video compilation of what they do. (WARNING: This is extremely graphic.)

Baghdad Central Prison aka: Abu Ghraib.

Abu Ghraib =/= Gitmo. 100% completely different.

No "mass graves" associated with Gitmo... heck there`s like 150 prisoners there iirc... not the 10,000+ Saddam kept in Abu, or the 1,000s who died there...

I think it`s pretty ironic that the guys who claim we need a gun ban think the government should apply rights to terrorists on foreign soil. So you don`t trust the government but want to ban guns.

Seems Obama dosen`t want to close Gitmo now mabey he learned some about why not to. Must be Bushes fault!

This honestly looks terrible. The cells are cramped, the portions of food are small, the library looks depressing. Hell, the guards are intimidating and the place is fenced in like a cage! Pretty discouraging, I know I don`t want to go there...

Yep, looks like a prison.

Honestly, I was kind of impressed that they were serving Halal food. That`s considerate of them! You think detainees would get the same kind of treatment over there?

I think it`s pretty ironic that the guys who claim they need an arsenal to defend themselves from the government seem to be okay with holding people in prison without charges, torturing them, and generally pooting on habeus corpus.

Never mind that many of the detainees have been released without any charges after being locked up for many years.

@FoolsPrussia: Mountains VS molehills.

American abuses were called abuses and punished.
Islamist abuses are NORMAL and they make no apology for torture & murder.

Reality dude, it`s a horrible place.

Gitmo is a 5-star hotel compared to "islamist" detention.

Locked in a room for 2 years? Beaten, little food, no sunlight or exercise, constant threat of death, ACTUAL torture and ACTUAL beheading? That`s what you can expect from the PLO or AQ or whomever.

This is a 1 star posting.

"Did that guy get his head cut off with a machete? I don`t think so. That`s an interrogation technique, put someone in an uncomfortable position called a "stress position" and use "sensory deprivation" and they`ll talk. No physical harm comes from it aside from a few sore muscles."

Have you seen the other pictures from Abu Ghraib? No justification.

They`re treated better than most maximum-security state prisoners. Considering that it would be perfectly legal under the Geneva Conventions to line them all up against the wall and execute them as unlawful combatants, they`ve got nothing to bitch about.

I say, f*** `em; feed `em fish heads.

Looks like a typical maximum security prison in the US. If you went to a "prison" in any one of the countries the detainees are from you`d see prisoners kneeling on the floor, hands tied behind their backs, with a couple of guys behind them holding AK47`s and wearing masks chanting "Allahu Akbar" as they`re about to behead them.
