While drug addiction and porn "addiction" may share some similarities, acting as if the two are truly comparable is flat out wrong and misleading.

Porn, like Anything even remotely enjoyable in life, can be habit forming. Habits and addictions are similar in the way a neurosis is similar to a psychosis. One hardly has an impact on your everyday life, the other destroys it completely.

This video causes me to doubt the video-makers credibility as any sort of presenter of scientific fact or theory.

    Stupid libretard thinking.

Based on that thinking, anything is an addition because everything you do is linked to brain chemistry. Deciding to do anything requires your brain to release a chemical.

When character flaws are described as "addition" you take away part from serious additions. It`s too common to be important. Much the same as calling alcoholism a "disease". It is not a disease. Alcohol is a drug and can be an addition, but addition is not a disease.

Oh, poor me, I`m an addict, I drink beer while browsing porn! Poor me! Can I get disability checks for that?

I liked the comparison to gambling addiction, but the thing about pr0n is that once I finish, I don`t really have a desire to do it again, at least not right away, so it`s not exactly like an addiction per se. It`s not as if I watch pr0n for the dialogue or story, so if I`m not horny I just don`t watch it. Simply put, there`s more to it than straight neurochemical addiction.

@danagamer- lolwut? The performers might more closely fit the norm of what is considered sexually attractive or desirable than most people, but the sex in most porn is terrible. I`ve found maybe a handful of scenes where the performers actually seem into it. I correct that- in most porn the dudes look into it. But I`m really not into watching a bored woman getting pounded by an overly enthusiastic bro, which is most of the porn I`ve found.

"once I finish, I don`t really have a desire to do it again, at least not right away"

I`m asking this as someone who`s never done drugs, but isn`t that the same for, say...a heroin addict? They get temporary relief and don`t feel the urge again?

It can definitely be addicting, though it`s more the urge to satisfy a basic human need than something like a drug. It`s more like binge eating, I think.

Gerry, I thought you were smart enough to avoid using BS strawman arguments.

"Based on that thinking, anything is an addition because everything you do is linked to brain chemistry. Deciding to do anything requires your brain to release a chemical."

Nobody, I repeat NOBODY, claimed that addiction is any behavior that is linked to brain chemistry. An addiction is a behavior pattern in which a person seeks a certain stimulus repeatedly over time, which they cannot stop EVEN IN THE FACE OF NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES. A habit of drinking alcohol is not an addiction. A habit of continuing to drink alcohol even after that habit has caused you to alienate friends and family, lose a job, etc, is an addiction. Enjoying porn repeatedly isn`t evidence of an addiction. But continuing to watch porn if it`s harming your ability to have an intimate relationship with a person you love IS. Addiction is very clearly a mental illness.

So, you are saying Bill Clinton was addicted to Monica Lewisnki. Sorry, bad behavior is not an `addiction` just `cause it feels good.

Or anyone who is overweight is `addicted` to McDonalds. They keep eating it inspite of the negative consequences.

    I think I`m with @Gerry1 on this:
LIKEING something and being addicted to it are completely different. It`s the same for "risk taking" or for "thrill seeking" behaviours too. Are parachutists "addicted" to leaping out of airplanes? I think not.

"Fetishes" on the other hand, if you can`t get it up, or off, without {fetish X}? THAT can be a problem...

But but but, the reason people can get addicted to chemicals is because of the damage they do to the receptors. So in my mind, no damage means no addiction in the chemical sense. I declare RA (reckless attachment) to be the new phrase for non chemical addiction.

@ turdburglar - in this case "lebretard" doesn`t refer to political liberals. It refers to soft-headed degrees like Liberal Arts... the kind of people who buy into pop psychology like repressed memories... we saw where that went. It was THEE theory everyone believed and it turned out to be totally bogus, completely debunked.

All these "additions". Basically anyone with a character flaw who lacks the self discipline to stop doing something gets to claim it`s "addiction". As if labeling it somehow makes them a victim and not just a stupid ass.

I`ve done my own stupid ass stuff in life, but I`m not so lame as to call my character flaws "addictions".

Didn`t bother watching the video, but being addicted to porn would follow the principle as being addicted to gambling. You can be psychologically addicted to anything really, so I`m sure there are people addicted to porn.

Ask Dan Savage about this, guys. I`d bet money he`d tell you that once you become inured to pornography, and it has to get kinkier or more violent to satisfy your needs, normal sexual activity no longer measures up. That`s a disorder, however you measure it.

"Or anyone who is overweight is `addicted` to McDonalds. They keep eating it inspite of the negative consequences."

With fast food a lot of the problem is the massive amounts of MSG they add. It`s in almost all our processed food and can be really addictive. Who knows what that crap is doing to our bodies. So yes people really are addicted to McDonald`s because of the MSG they put in their food.

I`m asking this as someone who`s never done drugs, but isn`t that the same for, say...a heroin addict? They get temporary relief and don`t feel the urge again?
Well, I`ve never done heroine but I think it would depend on the drug. Many a time when I`ve started to sober up after some weed I`ll have more. Basically some people have a problem and are horribly addicted, and others just like to party, and can quit whenever they want, like me! ;-)

An addiction is a behavior pattern in which a person seeks a certain stimulus repeatedly over time, which they cannot stop EVEN IN THE FACE OF NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES.
Um...no. Neurochemistry is the force behind addiction. I`m saying it. Because it`s true. I don`t need to suffer horribly negative consequences to be addicted to cigarettes.

I heard someone give a lecture on this and he basically said the same stuff about the science behind it, but what this video doesn`t go into is the social consequences of it.

In the last few decades we`ve seen what could be considered a huge social experiment. Porn was not easily accessed, and then all of a sudden, PORN EVERYWHERE! The guy giving the lecture drew connections between increasing dissatisfaction with relationships, `shallowness` (from WOMEN just as much as men), increasing divorce rates etc. and the rise of porn.

He also went into the porn industry and how female pornstars are basically just straight up abused and manipulated and how by watching porn you are funding this.

Basically, even though many of you reacted negatively towards this video, porn = REALLY BAD FOR US and I`m sure psychologists would interpret the negative reaction as a sign of addiction.

So here`s a question: does increased porn viewing equal lower birthrates, higher birthrates, or no change? That would be an interesting study. It could be like society`s subconscious control on overpopulation.

@Gerry: What they aren`t taking into account is the levels of gender hormones in a person, and the effect those have on behaviour. When I picture a porn addict, I think of them watching it not just to rub one out, but kind of like how I`ll watch Seinfeld if nothing else is on.

He also talked about how girls got into porn and so often they were sexually abused as kids (often by family members) and they sort of become de-sensitized to sex and a whole other heap of negative mental and environmental issues lead to porn. I wish I could find the lecture again to link here.

Profound consequences, huh? Like how porn gives me AIDS, that new strain of untreatable/incurable gonorrhea, an unwanted pregnancy, a one night stand with a serial killer, and a relationship I don`t want to be in? Wow, I guess I better quit the porn and go do it with the next johnson that happens my way - the more you know.
