    @honkeylips: That`s intentional, of course.
The "artist" thinks he`s being "clever" by ripping off the works of others and throwing in enough political bullshiite to choke a whale.

@fancylad - I see what you are doing here. The pic has nothing to do with guns, but maybe if you mention guns, peeps will argue and get you a few more hits.

If you want more hits, stop posting garbage. Almost every post today is just a lame picture with a lame comment. Not a very interesting day at IAB. The only couple good posts were user submitted. At least we can look forward to kitteh tomorrow. She is way better at this than you.

This is not "ripping off" Norman Rockwell. It`s intentionally using a very famous painting`s meaning as part of the joke. I`m sure the fact that it was a Norman Rockwell, which is considered as American as apple pie, was also an intended part of the joke.

I think some people are missing the message in the political cartoon.
Normal Rockwell, a great American artist, would have gotten it, and applauded it. He understood political messages in art.

The message is pretty clear, not super clever, but clear. It is also one that I would find pretty benign in today`s day and age. Wouldn`t seem like criticizing the KKK would ruffle many feathers. But clearly it does. Apparently criticizing the KKK is considered "political bullpoo" by our token white supremacist, 5Cats.

The picture has a point, but it is missed when separated from the accompanying story. I believe that what it is representing is Jacob Burkle, a white man in the confederate south who was a part of the Underground Railroad. His activities by necessity remained hidden until a few decades ago.

@unmercyfuldu: As @Gerry1 has pointed out: Disrespecting Rockwell is NOT a valid form of political expression.
The KKK, Hitler and the Confederacy? Could you pick EASIER targets to shoot in that "leftist political barrel" eh?
This "artist" is a coward who is too scared to produce origional work. He hides behind stereotypes and "political correctness" and mistakes SHOUTING with having something to actually say...

I doubt very much you`ll understand, but I still try to communicate.

@Gerry1: (and @CrakrJak too!) When I went looking for this image, I was amazed at just how MUCH Rockwell produced! His "political statements" are every bit as "sharp and witty" as his other works.

He was "just plain good!" Thx you two, for posting some of his best, eh?

Basic Fail #1: The actual guy is actually wearing a KKK hood.

If this were to salvage ANY "meaning" it would need to reflect how the "average American" is somehow a KKK member. Specifically: the "painter" would NOT be wearing a hood, his reflection WOULD show a hood and then he`d IMAGINE himself as "Captain America".

This LAZY-ASS "political artist" applies all the though and subtlety of a ROCK in his depiction of WHITE Americans as racists.

Sorry @GErry1: Racists come in ALL colours... (as you`ll surely agree, eh?)

The one you posted? The 4 men "marching in step" and the little girl? She`s "out of step"? Powerful! Yet subtle, eh?
See? THAT! That is a powerful message!
(ie: She`s just a little girl, those men are protecting her, like soldiers, and 15 other "meaningful things" too.)

What THIS "artist" has done is to cheapen Rockwell`s legacy for CHEAP political gain.

@Mr.Peabody: I do respect your opinion, and understand what you`re trying to say (I think!) but I disagree:
#1 it`s a more modern-style painting than the civil-war era. IDK how the man you mention could reasonably be understood as the subject.
#2 @FancyLad was an IDIOT and brought "guns" into it, which (sad to say) poisons the waters of understanding, eh?
In other words: He took it FROM "the past" and made it "the present" with his dumb description. You see that, yes?
#3 IDK if the "artist" intended it to be as you claim, but that`s NOT IMPORTANT here!
What is important is how the VIEWER sees it!

So I (personally) find no room in my heart to excuse this piece-of-shiite crap.

It`s biased, bigoted, obvious, racist and STUPID.

So, apparently, it`s not criticizing the KKK, but rather it`s criticizing those who see themselves as American patriots as no better than the KKK? Either that, or it`s directly mocking Klan members, something that is completely uncourageous and lacks any measure of risk taking. That`s like being outspoken on child rape.

This is dumb. Plus Hitler and the Klan wouldn`t get along well.

But Seriously, it looks like the image is about racists in the south see themselves as true "Capt. American`s". There`s A LOT of Confederate pride down there. Jon Hubbard, Arkansas Rep, called slavery a "blessing in disguise" for blacks.

Yes 5Cats... Being critical of the KKK, the confederacy and Hitler is all part of the leftist political agenda and not simply the agenda of reasonable human beings everywhere. You could be critical of this work as simplistic or un-motivated but it is clear as day that your real criticism steams from you apologetics of racism. You clearly seem personally attacked by the message and not the artistic integrity.

Having re-read the entire article I linked to below, There are 2 possible meanings to this picture:

    1. It is to represent Jacob Burkle (after more attention to the article, I`m probably wrong on this theory though)
    or
    2. The article goes on to describe the climate in Memphis (TN) where "The rewriting of history in the South is a retreat by beleaguered whites into a mythical self-glorification." So it appears the author is describing how white politicians etc. are trying to espouse a revisionist history of the civil war, and the south`s involvement.

Another retarded graduate from Glenn Beck university. The only Republicans in the South from the late 1800`s to the 1960`s were uber-liberals and blacks. Do you really think the South was going to be a part of the party of Lincoln? Hell no! They were all Democrats (conservatives and liberals). But of course you have had this explained to you at least fifty times on here OldOllie. At this point you are just being a troll.

Man, you guys are thinking way too hard about this. It`s showing a racist painter(KKK and `stars and bars` as symbols for racism) looking in the mirror and seeing himself as a virtuous hero of the people (Captain America). That doesn`t have to be a liberal view, a conservative view or any other view. It doesn`t have to align to a political party. It *ought* to be a moral warning for *all* of us.

It`s a critique on human nature and failure to check motives. That`s it.

"I`m sure there`s a gun angle you can work in, too."

Of course. The gun control movement originated in the Deep South to disarm blacks and prevent them defending themselves from people like the Democrat Party`s militant wing, the KKK. Hitler, also depicted here, introduced strict gun control in the Dritte Reich.

It`s too bad you Yanks have never been the victim of genocide at any point in your past. Because if you had you`d be able to defend yourself against cartoons that were in any way critical of your present political actions in the way the Israelis do, and have people take you seriously when you get upset about valid criticism of your actions on the world stage.

The Israeli government has really got this down to a fine art. They love to perpetuate the idea that every criticism of their actions is anti-Semitic in some way. It isn`t, if course, any more than criticism of the government of Robert Mugabwe is racist, or criticism of the present government of Germany is sexist.

So, there you have it, chaps. If you want to escape criticism, you just need to find one major event in your history in which you are the victim and the world will side with you as one in sympathy and protect you from criticism for the next 911 years. Where on earth will you ever find such a historical event to use a convenient excuse for escaping criticism for your brutality, though, I wonder?

On another note, I noticed that they`ve started calling that gobshyte younger son of Prince Charles "Captain Wales" now that he`s been promoted to flying helicopters (well, sitting in the back) in between getting photographed naked in Las Vegas hotel rooms and dressing as a Nazi for fancy dress parties. Every time I hear the phrase "Captain Wales" I think of a character akin to Captain America, but with a sheepskin cape and a shield with a dragon on it.

Because in this case he is way off the mark. Not slamming SmagBoy1 because I usually agree with him. Check out the article MrPeabody added. When you read the article that goes along with the cartoon it makes sense.

@Mr.Peabody: Thanks in advance for your patience.
So Jacob Burkle was a Klansman, BUT he also helped rescue slaves? Is that the story? If he wasn`t in the KKK, why is he wearing the hood? If this is a pre-civil war story, why have a civil war flag? Or the KKK for that matter, since they formed AFTER it.

Q: What`s HITLER doing in the picture?

    Burkle Estate

@turdburglar: I disagree with almost every "left wing" political and social idiology, so naturally I speak out against them. I disagree with some right wingers too, but there`s no need to mention that since a HURRICANE of screaming leftists always rises up to attack ANYTHING they disagree with...

    1. This has nothing to do with Norman Rockwell other than the author of the article hijacked the picture.

    2. Please don`t comment on my comments if you are not going to read the article the picture is part of. And I don`t mean run off to Wikipedia with part of the information. I`m also less inclined to believe that this is about Jacob Burkle, but is more about revisionist history, but read it and come to your own conclusion.

@5Cats, thanks for clarifying that you are racist simply because the ""left wing" political and social idiology" is opposed to racism. Believing the opposite of every position an ideology holds just to spite the name of that ideology isn`t a childish way to form opinions or anything! Good job human!

Even after you post a picture of the article people still can`t see the hero in the drawing. People only see what they want to see.

Thanks, and yeah I don`t get it either, it`s rather frustrating.

@Mr.Peabody: Well I did read part of the article before, and now I`ve carefuly read the whole thing.
I STILL don`t know why we`re supposed to "get that" this picture is about -historical revisionism- without a LONG explaination.
"Art" is supposed to be judged on it`s merits. If this painting sends "mixed messages" it`s the fault of the ARTIST, not the public.

    1) It has everything to do with the origional artwork this Mr.Fish has copied! He chose it on purpose.

@unmercifuldu: Riiight, there`s NO racism on "the left"! Just ask Clarence Thomas about that! Or Condie Rice...

You clearly seem personally attacked by the message and not the artistic integrity.
What? huh? The message IS the artistic integrity! It`s the SAME THING! Making a `political parody` of a famous picture has "integrity" now? Oy vey!

ok, here is how the article relates to the picture.
The author is describing several situations in which the white political leaders hold up individuals who were racist slave owners as hero`s while ignoring real hero`s such as burkle:

The split between those in Memphis who hold up authentic heroes—those who fought to protect, defend and preserve life, such as Wells and Burkle—and those who memorialize slave traders and bigots such as Forrest points up a disturbing rise of a neo-Confederate ideology in the South. Honoring figures like Forrest in Memphis while ignoring Wells would be like erecting a statue to the Nazi death camp commander Amon Goeth in the Czech Republic town of Svitavy, the birthplace of Oskar Schindler, who rescued 1,200 Jews.

so to tie it back the to picture, the man, a racist is painting himself as a hero, and represents the idea that some in the Memphis are painting some slave owne

and represents the idea that some in the Memphis are painting some slave owners as heroes. I`m sure that the picture of Hitler is there because in the south many involved in racist circles ascribe to Hitler`s ideas about race. If you think of the context of the article, the picture makes perfect sense, whether or not you agree with the message.

I would argue that this in not intended to be art that stands on it`s own, or was intended to be hung in a museum, it is rather a political cartoon that goes with an article that expresses the idea that some look in a mirror and see a hero, when in fact they are bigoted racists.

And it is not intended to represent all white people, it is just commenting on the specific situation in Memphis, TN because it is part of the article.

@Mr.Peabody: Ah, well! It would be an entirely different thing if @FancyLad had linked the article, and NOT brought "guns" into the mix!
As a companion piece to an article it makes more sense, kinda.

However that`s not how it was presented here, so you can see why it got "misunderstood" eh?

And even as a political cartoon it fails, since it simply depicts either all "southerners" or indeed all Americans as deluded racists. That`s what the origional picture was all about: a "self portrait", right? America looking at itself. Rockwell`s pictures were all about "reflecting America" be it good or bad.

Mr.Fish is the one who`s delusional, HE imagines himself to be the hero, by fighting strawmen and paper tigers...

No. You tried to spin it that the democrats today are racist because the southern democrats were racist when as you have finally admitted all the white south were democrats in the 1900`s. You know exactly what you are doing with this spin. You are doing it to pretend that liberals are racists when the truth is (as numerous people have explained to you over the years) that all of the white South moved to the Democratic party when Lincoln was in power, and they stayed there for almost a hundred years. The Southern conservatives in the Democratic party at the time even formed their own "Tea Party" offshoot of the Democratic party called the Dixiecrats. The conservative Dixiecrats opposed racial integration and wanted to retain Jim Crow laws and white supremacy. The more you use this spin to try and make the Democrats of today look racist, or the liberal democrats of the 1900`s look racist, the more it shows how racist you are - it`s projecting.

I am not saying that there are no liberals that are racist because of course there are but they hold nothing on the vast number of conservatives today and in our history that were racist. Until Republican candidates learn to talk `with` instead of talking `to` minorities they are going to continue to lose elections. The days of the Southern Strategy are over.

markust, that tired old canard that Republicans are racists is nothing but liberal Democrat slander.

Democrats won the black vote away from the Party of Lincoln by becoming the Party of Santa Clause. They treat blacks like children who need someone to take care of them, and 90% of them are more than happy to play along. The Democrats have promised them free health care, free birth control, free abortions, free housing, free utilities, free food, free education, and free ObamaPhones, and they`re going to make all those rich white folks pay for it, because your great, great, great, great, great, great, grandaddy was a slave, and they owe you.

So, if I don`t want to give up my hard-earned money to Obama so he can use it to buy the votes of the last 5% of blacks who didn`t vote for him, does that make me a racist? Why am I even asking? I know your answer. You`ve already made up your mind.

If liberals as a whole are such racists OldOllie why do you have to spin history with Glenn Beck`s whole Southern Democrats lie? If you can`t tell the truth to get your point across then your point is a little suspect.
