This was NOT 2012 DA14.. that one is coming to earth later today and is known..

what crashed into the atmosphere here was an unknown asteroid that had no designation. We only know about 10% of objects that may cross the earth`s path. :)

Just want to second Corydoras` statement. This was NOT 2012DA14. At all. It was not associated with 2012DA14, has nothing to do with 2012DA14, and should not in any way be confused with 2012DA14.

Not 2012DA14. This is one the "experts" who are constantly looking out for us didn`t see coming.

Our budget allows us to watch about 3% of the sky and begging your pardon sir but it`s a big-ass sky.

"Our budget allows us to watch about 3% of the sky and begging your pardon sir but it`s a big-ass sky."

Yes, and much of the watching is done by high-level "amateurs" that report their findings to the main authority. Today`s asteroid was discovered by people in Spain a few years ago. Russia`s part of the world needs more amateur sky watchers.
