Anyone who doesn`t think the current enthusiasm for Islam is based largely on the tenet that women are expected to serve and obey men, while being valued somewhere below reptiles, is kidding himself.

    "who cares?"

Freedom cares, a-hole. And you should too. Why? Because that chick is doing what American women did 100 years ago - standing up to oppressive men dispite the real threat of physical violence. I believe, with every ounce of my being, that some man in that crowd saw her and, while booing and joining the anti-freedom protest - HAD THE SEEDS OF DOUBT PLANTED. YOU KNOW HOW YOU GROW A FOREST?? PLANT LOTS OF FUC*KING TREES. Some seedlings don`t germinate. Most die. But that doesn`t stop the maple from dropping it`s seed pods and TRYING.

We should funnel money to women`s lib groups in Islamic counties as a way of undermining their governments. Don`t kid yourself that that isn`t already happening.....seeding dissent and political unrest IS WHAT WE DO.

"Well, I`m sure a woman`s opinion will silence a group of male islamic fundamentalists."

Dr. Martin Luther King openly marched through KKK territory, and supporters of the civil rights movement did far braver things (like walking or being) in places of the south that didn`t take kindly to coloreds, and some of those places still don`t. Where is the KKK now?

(Rhetorical question gerry - I know where you stand on this)

goallejerry thinks that the natural end all of all civilizations is Western Liberalism. This is Eurocentric thinking, though. The fact is that Western style moderates are hard to come by in these countries and they don`t generally see themselves as wanting to progress towards a culture they have been in constant opposition to for over a thousand years. Liberal secularists are rare, most of those who are secular are often Socialist Authoritarians. Egyptians I have spoken to said that the educated, urban intelligentsia that we often hear about is probably 5%, no more than 10%.

And taking this into account, we understand how "The Innocence of Muslims" killed so many people around the world, while a SNL sketch of "Djesus Uncrossed" didn`t kill anyone or make anyone angry.

By the way, there is no proof this even happened. And this woman probably doesn`t like gay people. She`s probably more conservative than one of those racist American Southerners. Etc.

These islamist extremists are growing, not only abroad but in Europe and the USA.

What`s really obscene is that many liberals tell us to respect this racist/sexist/bigoted muslim religion, yet get upset because a church wants to put a nativity scene in a local park for Christmas.

Hey liberals, if you really want to `change the world` how about you go over there and protect her rights, since her`s are the most endangered, and quit being a pest to Christians here at home.

    Too chicken? I thought so.

Anyways, it seems that now arrogant big mouthed know nothing attention whores are now coming out in Tuisia, thats `Arab Spring` progress for ya. I wouldent want any woman in my life risking her safety in that way just to have the satisfaction of spouting meaningless misconceptions against a bunch of angry men. These people can mess you up, its not worth it either which way. It seems rebellious and heroic untill they mess you up. Then you`re traumatized for life and your family suffers. Hope that doesnt happen to her, just saying she got a selfish and dangerous attitude.

Crakr- you miss the point by a mile, you want respect for your sensible, moderate religious views- well then, you show that respect to sensible moderate Islam. You want to be branded a fundamental extremist- then behave like an intolerant a.hole. You are both entitled to believe what you want- you are NOT entitled to inflict that on anyone else... they should not treat women like crap- neither should your lot...Islam, Christian, Jewish- all perfectly fine religions which have brought wonderful things to us all, but each one has also grown a branch of misogynist idiots who think they are `right`- it is that behaviour the rest of us hate....

Of course there have been many people killed in the name of religion- but there have been evil deeds done by humans for millennia- not all of religion is bad, it has many positive benefits. That bit I mentioned about inflicting your beliefs upon others- that covers it really. Humans are quite unpleasant creatures in many respects- and they like to think they are right- but if we attack all aspects of religion then decent people who DO believe will defend their belief. If you attack bad behaviour done in the NAME of religion then those who behave well will support you. God is imaginary- so all behaviour done in the NAME of God is done by people- who just like being bullies. most people who believe are harmeless, just a few try to rally the rest to the extremes... best not give them reason to hear the cry.

I suspect that the number of teenagers taking their lives, the number of public figures denouncing homosexuality etc may have something to do with it. Tod Aiken ( ?) Sarah Bachman- these are public figures making statements of an extreme nature. Are you therefore surprised that the world sees your county in that way?

The point I am making is that most people- religious or not, are decent and kind, they just want to get on with their lives. A small minority use religion of any variety to excuse behaving like a twat- so can we not get hung up on which God they choose to excuse their behaviour and concentrate on how they behave. Demonising Muslims, demonising Christians is diverting attention from the actual problem- which is behaving badly, oppressing other people and trying to explain that behaviour with religion- or race, or some other rubbish. It is all just the same when you take its clothes of- power.

madduck - "most people- religious or not, are decent and kind"
    Thank you Anne Frank.
I`ve found the average person on the street, or in line at 7-11, is a selfish jerk who doesn`t care how much inconvenience they cause others as long as they get their own way. Hell, you only have to look at how most people drive to know this is true. No consideration for others, unless they are in a situation where they HAVE to... like at work where they can be fired if they aren`t moderately considerate.

Maybe Gerry- but get that same person on their own and they change- in crowds we stop seeing people as people- that arse who drives like an arrogant nutter is probably still an arrogant arse- but he won`t willingly hurt a person- with a name and a life, he might hurt a nameless non-person. Which still does not detract from the point I am making.

Mmm- bad reason to be atheist- you can`t choose not to believe in gravity- I suspect you are an atheist because there is no evidence to support a God. Bad things might have been done in the name of God- but not because of Him 9 him not being real `n all)- they were done because the people doing it wanted something- usually power.

madduck: I believe you`re taking a lot of those bad `examples` either out of context or just plain made up.

Trying to teach kids good morals isn`t always easy, I`ve seen dozens of examples on shows like `Maury` and `Beyond Scared Straight`. It would`ve never crossed my mind to steal a car, rob someone`s house, get a girl pregnant or abuse my parents. Nowadays those exploits seem almost commonplace for teens.

So where do these bad role models come from? Everywhere! TV, internet, movies, music and magazines are all corrupting our societal morals. The breakup of the two parent family is another factor.

If something isn`t done to straighten up the coming generations and correct the immorality of mainstream media we will literally be up sh|t creek. Otherwise these kids won`t give a damn about taking care you or me and they`ll shrug off the burden of doing so like a flea on a hairless dog.

I`ve not found that. I`ve found that most people are moderately decent as individuals. Group mentality is when it all goes to pot. "I" is usually fine. "We" is all too often a nutjob.

A few months ago, I fell in the street (someone had dropped a cable and I got my feet caught in it). I was running and went down quite hard, ending up on my back in the gutter. I banged my head, which of course bled a fair bit, and being rammed into the edge of the kerb didn`t do my shoulder much good.

Random strangers came over immediately to help. One called an ambulance. One lent me her phone to call work to tell them I wouldn`t be in. One had medical training and checked me over. They all waited until I was safely in the ambulance.

This kind of thing happens every day. The twats and violent nutters stand out, but most people are reasonably decent as individuals.

But other "small minorities" aren`t running countries, conducting civil wars in order to run countries and running international terrorist organisations to destroy civilisation and run the world.

So no, it`s not true that the religion doesn`t matter. Islam is a particularly power-orientated religion and it therefore encourages twattery. Some of the twats would indeed still be twats without it...but they`d be powerless twats and therefore far less dangerous. It does matter.

I care very much how they behave, and I have watched people do amazing things in the name of religion, and kill in the name of religion- it is them- not the religion. I am actually no fan of religion simply because it distracts people thinking, it is point less and worthless. But to make an enemy of an entire group because they believe in god is also silly- make enemies due to behaviour.
Crakr- those bad examples are very high profile public things, I am short of space here so precised. You must KNOW about Perry- and some of the stuff Santorum came out with was scary!!!

correct the immorality of mainstream media
Hmm, that sounds a lot like socialism to me. Who are you to censor them and push your morals onto their business model? Or is it that you only believe in capitalism when it doesn`t conflict with your values?

patchgrabber: I don`t believe in censorship. The better solution to this corruption would be a drop in demand. Take away the reward these media companies get from publishing that sort of tripe and they won`t make it anymore.

Or you could do what liberals love to do when they want to `ban` something without passing a banishment law, tax it to death.

I`m not for higher taxes, rather see them branded with a stigma and shamed out of business, but either would be effective.

I have met so many wonderful Muslims and Hindus throughout my time in the tech industry. They are nothing like the horrible stereotype the media has made them out to be. You could take any group and focus on their bad people but why?

I hate extremists, I hate fundamentalists, and I hate generalisations. I think they are terribly unfair, and also a sign of sloppy thinking. Which is why the idea that all religious people are idiots, or all Muslims nut cases- it is quite simply not true, and it also means that quite a few Muslims feel that the west is their enemy- and that just makes the situation worse... same goes for Christians- most are sensible, fair minded people who do accept evolution and good science.

patchgrabber: The goal is possible, but it would take a concerted effort by a significant number of people. Apparently you`d prefer this country wallow in depravity and degradation.

Neither do I. But it`s not kept in the privacy of their own head. It`s forced on everyone within reach of their power, it was the route they took to power and it maintains their power.

I think you`re making a false dichotomy. You`re taking the position that religion has no effect and you`re arguing as if the only opposing position is that *all* theists (or all theists of specific religions) are violent nutters. Those are not the only two possible positions.

I`m not patchgrabber, but I want to respond to that statement.

What is "depravity and degradation"? I consider most religions that way, and certainly dominant ones. So what you`d see as a perfect society, I`d see as depraved and degrading. I consider both capitalism and communism (as applied to the real world, i.e. not really communism) to be depraved and degrading.

I make those judgements based on the effects of those things on society in general.

Angilion: What is "depravity and degradation"?

Any person that has to sell their body to earn the money to live is degraded.

Any person that pays to see or touch another`s body is depraved.

Just a few examples, of many, that are increasingly becoming `the norm` in our society.

No Angillion - or at least I am trying not to at any rate. I agree there is a middle position- but not one we often see on the `net. You are correct- some religious positions lend themselves to encouraging bad behaviour, but not all. Hence why I still stand by my position of suggesting we should judge on behaviour, simply because it is ( as far as I can see) the only yardstick that stops this pointless polarised argument. To say that ALL religion is harmful is demonstrably untrue, to say that ALL religion is good- ditto. That can be brought into every faith too- all Buddhism is not good- all Islam is not bad... But to say that if we did away with religion would stop a lot of conflict is very likely untrue too- sexism, racism, all those lovely categories we use we fill the void very quickly. Those perverted mullahs who think the mere sight of a womens eyes invites rape- they are perverts who would quickly find another justification and another rallying cry.

    Humans are retarded.

I wonder if poo like this will ever stop happening in the name of some fictitious power in the sky? Probably not, people fully believe they are right without a shred of evidence which is the scariest thing
