Watterson isn"t about the money. Can you imagine how much he could make if he was though?

@SarahofBorg: What? YOU refuse to let me watch you take a shower, but you complain & phone the police every time I try!

(I hope this comes off as "funneh" and not "creepeh" eh?)

It`s his product, if he doesn`t want -more- money off it then that`s for him to decide.

I agree with his statement about quick cash but not all merch is bad especially if the artist is the one creating them like Voltaire.

I`ve known about this for a while, and it still seems odd. Like, I can understand the argument for artistic integrity, but...if he had exercised control over WHAT C&H merchandise was licensed, he could have kept his integrity AND made money. Watterson stopped making new C&H comics 17 years ago...wonder what he`s been doing to support himself?

There is a seller on ebay (dericsmom) who has been selling (presumably) bootleg "art prints" of Watterson`s for years now...

Thats cool, thats his perogative, but I dont see what difference it makes to anyone but him anyways. Its not like he fought against the comemrcialization of a public resource to prevent suffering. Hes just an eccentric who can afford to be difficult. Good for him, Meaningless for us. Love the comic strip though, and am happy to keep enjoying them either way...

Ooh, there`s a bitter take on it, Onoffonoffon! You`re probably right, but it`s still pretty black.

He has every right to control his intellectual property, but I don`t find his position to be particularly admirable.

"If he refuses to license it, than he has no right to complain when people bootleg it."

Sure he does. It`s still his intellectual property. He has the right to expect people to follow established copyright law, regardless of those peoples` sentiment toward the property in question.

AS much as I love Calvin & Hobbes, and think Bill Watterson is completely insane, I stand behind him in his fight for his rights!

Charles Schultz demanded that EVERY single "Peanuts" spin off product be shown to him for his approval. He only "vetoed" a handful over the years, but everyone agrees the makers knew he was watching and made better products because of that.

E.C. Segar Created "Popeye" and got money from a spinach company to put him on the label.
After the first 2 year term was up, Segal REFUSED to renew the contract (even though it was a big % of his income!) because he said the spinich was poor quality. The company BEGGED him to reconsider and VOWED to put #1 spinach in. He did, they did. Popeye Spinach was the top quality in canned spinach for decades.

I spent a few seconds thinking, "You know, I didn`t realize it but there is no C&H merchandise out there". Then I realized I had already spent most of my life not giving a shiat anyways. And I have a couple of C&H collection books. So, meh!

If he refuses to license it, than he has no right to complain when people bootleg it. People want to own merchandise related to something they love. I would kill for a cute Calvin and Hobbs shirt, and wearing one would make anyone respect the comic less.

darkmagic14n-"yet every day you will see at least 3 Calvin-peeing-on-something stickers "

Not licensed by the artist, and he see`s no money from it.

I loved (still love) Calvin & Hobbes. Great strip.

I hated when he quit syndicating them, but I appreciated his reasoning not to run a good strip into the ground.

@ whodat - Really? That`s awesome! My respect for Slash just went up a few notches.

@ robthelurker - if you had any integrity, you`d burn that shirt.

"When cartoonists fight their syndicates, it`s usually to make more money, not less. And making the whole issue even more absurd, when I didn`t license, bootleg `Calvin and Hobbes` merchandise sprung up to feed the demand. Mall stores openly sold T-shirts with drawings illegally lifted from my books, and obscene or drug-related shirts were rife on college campuses. Only thieves and vandals have made money on `Calvin and Hobbes` merchandise."

Props to him for not selling out cause I sure would. I like C&H but come on, the guys not Hemingway. Personally I`d enjoy a stuffed toy Hobbes. On second thought, no props to him. Greedy jerk...

i have a t-shirt with a disgruntled looking calvin on it with a caption that says, "everyday of my life im forced to add another name to the list of people who piss me off."

Chinese bootleg bullcrap is what you have. Hope you think of child labor and rape when you wear it, because that is what you are, a child laboring rapist. Ok, not really, all I`m saying is bill waterson will be suing you as soon as I forward him your screen name, which I will.

Ok, not really.

This isn`t technically true. He did authorize a couple of calendars back in the 80`s, a run of postage stamps, and there were a few teachers manuals that included C&H. As for those stickers you see on everyone`s back widow, those are C&H ripoffs. They are NOT affiliated with Bill Watterson in any way.

I always love hearing stories of artists who refuse to let there work be exploited. Most people who start out as artists, musicians, etc do it because they love it, some get lucky enough to be able to make a career out of it. When someone comes in and exploits their life work it`s insulting. One of my favorite recent stories is when Slash refused to allow the producers of "Glee" to use a Guns N Roses song because he thinks the show sucks. He said, "Glee is worse than Grease, and Grease is bad enough" hahaha!

I still own one of the two Calvin and Hobbes T-shirts I have bought in my life. Pity I ripped the "Life is short - fly naked" one. Both rip-offs, of course.
