Sorry, but this is complete nonsense! It is very poor statistics, released as propaganda to draw attention from the number of birds killed by wind farms. It has no scientific basis whatever.

They showed that the vast majority of the killing is done by feral cats that are killing to eat. So there`s no reason for owners to keep their well-fed cats cooped up. They need to weed out the population, especially vermin around the yard. They are probably killing sick birds anyway since a healthy bird isn`t likely to get caught. That`s why it makes me so mad when I find out people I know aren`t immediately getting their cat spayed or neutered. They`ll gladly spend the money to declaw them for their convenience but won`t spend the money to prevent pregnancies that either put more cats into the wild, in shelters or keep people from adopting ones already there.

They had to do a study to find out cats are dangerous to birds and other small animals?

I thought it pretty common knowledge that short of poisonous creatures pound for pound ain`t nothing walking on land is more dangerous than a cat.

Most of those critters are mice and rats, not cute wittle chipmonks...

Windfarms are far more dangerous for birds than the 10s of millions of pet cats...

I had a cat that would bring a dead mouse onto our deck every single day. He was a master hunter. I once saw him pull a cardinal out of the air. It was absolutely awesome to watch.

In Sweden, hunters are REQUIRED by law to kill any and all stray cats they see. As they are considered a foreign and and invasive species.

Technically this law also specifies that all loose cats on public, or a hunters private property is considered a stray, even if it`s wearing a collar.

These days however, hunters rarely shoot cats, as they aren`t one of the invasive species you`re paid to kill.

My cat cought 1 mouse during her lifetime. She kept it as a pet for over 2 weeks and hid it every time I tried to take it from her. Then I cought her trying to stuff it into my airconditioner vent after what I think she accidently killed it. Later I found where she had been keeping it. She had it hidden in her toybox and been feeding it catfood

When my cat Leia was still quite young she jumped a big-a*sed crow from behind. First of all, she was stealthy as HELL (cuz crows are smart & very wary)! The bird was so big he just shrugged her off & flew away, but, I`ll tell ya--they never landed in our backyard again while she was alive. She`s been gone for years now, but, boy, the love I feel for her is still so very palpable. Sorry for waxing so sentimental IAB, just a momentary lapse.

This had to be a tongue-in-cheek news bit; I would have face-palmed too many times while watching if I thought they were serious. Yes, spay/neuter your PETS, but not just cats!! (and if these guys were right about the numbers, just think about how over-run with birds/vermin we`d be without cats! and dogs?)

Yep, definitely a problem. Because, how many mammals do humans kill and eat every year?

(So says the happy carnivore, but I`m just playing Devil`s Advocate here.)
