How to cook a steak:

Get your grill HOT.

Slap a 2lb, properly seasoned and/or marintaed steak down on it. Count to 10.

Flip it. Count to 5.

It`s done.

@5cats: I`d always assumed that`s what a blue rare was - basically just putting it on the grill so it has lines. I like it a little more than that, but if it`s not bloody I`m not impressed. I just cannot for the life of me know how someone cannot tell the difference between medium-well and rare. I could have gotten a chimp to do a better job. I`m always polite and friendly to wait staff, and even though I`d never been there before I only tip poorly when service is bad. Oh well, it`s not like I`m eating there again.

@patchy, @MeGrendel (& @McGovern too!)
With my years of working in many restaurant kitchens, (not as a chef however) I`ve learned how to tell the "wellness" apart! It`s an art, really.

A chef friend had this experience:
A guy kept sending back his "blue rare" steaks as overcooked. My friend put some cooking oil on the grill (causing a small fire) scortched one side, then the other, and sent it out.
The guy said it was the best steak he`d ever had! Became a regular customer.
It wasn`t "blue rare" it was RAW! But it`s illegal to serve raw steaks (afik) in Canada.

I prefer "medium" which is probably the hardest to get right...

@Megrendel: Ah, something we agree on - steak. I didn`t go to Applebee`s for the steak specifically, I was on a trip going skydiving with some friends and we were waiting for winds to die down and Applebee`s was the only restaurant nearby that looked reputable, as I had recently had a bad experience at a mom-and-pop restaurant the week earlier. But seriously, how can you f*ck up a rare steak?

@patchgrabber.

two things:
1) Going to Applebee`s for a steak is like going to Yugo for a car.
2) I like my steak so rare a good vet can have it back on it`s feet in 15 minutes.

My standard reply to `Would you like that Rare` is, `I don`t even want it hurt real bad.`

Last time I went to an Applebee`s I asked for my steak rare (I stopped the waiter before he left my table and clarified that I wanted it "RARE-rare" but not blue-rare) and it came back medium-well. THAT`S the real crime at Applebee`s.

I feel for the employee in this matter, but there was a myriad of things she could have done before uploading the images of the receipts to censor out personal information. The fact that she didn`t even think about it means that she`s likely not intelligent enough to be a valuable employee.

whodat6484-"She deserves that abuse."

Whether she did, or not, the wait staff`s actions were against company policy and opened the restaurant, and the company, to a lawsuit.

A customer expects, and has a legally protected right to, a certain amount of privacy and security of a financial transaction.

There will probably be a lawsuit, and Applebee`s will most likely settle before it goes to trial.

@Kilgore89 - "...the Pastor left a $6 tip in cash..."

Hahahahaha!!!!!! You don`t really believe that, do you?

"Left a snarky comment on a receipt: now subject to endless abuse from strangers."

She deserves that abuse. She`s a pastor which means she`s in a position where she has influence over what other people think & do. Any person in a position like that is held to a higher standard than others. They`re supposed to lead by example, none of that "do as I say, not as I do" bullsh*t.

Three Pastors discussing their personal way to determine how the tithes will be split with God.

Pastor A: `I draw a big circle on the floor. I take all the tithes, throw them in the air, and whatever lands in the circle is God`s`

Pastor B: `I draw a big circle on the floor. I take all the tithes, throw them in the air, and whatever lands outside the circle is God`s`

Pastor C: `I draw a big circle on the floor. I take all the tithes, throw them in the air, and whatever God catches he keeps.`

@whodat: A simple test of whether the waitress posted too much information is this: Did anyone figure out who`s reciept it was?

Answer? Yes. Seeing as the entire internet now knows the identification of the pastor, it`s a FACT that the waitress posted too much, and inappropriate, information.

And, in doing so, the waitress also opened up Applebee`s the a lawsuit? (you don`t think a `pastor` rude enough to do this is not above filing a lawsuit?)

Keegan31-"Yes she broke the rules, but she didn`t need to be fired"

That`s the company`s decision to make. This waitress just opened this company to possibly millions in losses.

Keegan31-"A warning tends to be the norm for a first time offense."

"Yes, our waitress beat a customer over the head with a barstool, but we`re going to let her off with a warning."

It`s also very possible that: A) this was not her first disciplinary action and B) she was a

@Kilgore89 18% auto-grat is common, in most restaurants, for groups of 8 or more (which this was). The auto-grat was posted on their menu (which you would know if you read a damn paper). Further, your evidence that she did tip is based solely upon her word (yeah, I read that same article). The tip the waitress received was due to the fact that scribbling out an auto-grat does nothing.

Yes she broke the rules, but she didn`t need to be fired. A warning tends to be the norm for a first time offense.

We know the picture poster wasn`t the waitress. We don`t care. If you`re an non-nice individual, how dare you get upset over someone telling others that you were an non-nice individual. You don`t want this sort of thing to happen, Don`t be an non-nice individual.

In the end I`m not worried about the waitress. She`s already received multiple job offers, she`ll be ok.

Funny, if you have read any of the news stories on this (real newspapers, not just internet forums) you would know that the Pastor left a $6 tip in cash which is only 25 cents less than the 18%. The fact of the matter is that the amount of a tip should be left to the discretion of the customer, not tacked onto the bill automatically.

As far as the waitress getting fired let`s be realistic for a minute. Crappy job or not, you broke the rules and got caught. Further, the waitress who posted the receipt wasn`t even the one who waited the table (again, go read a newspaper). I certainly don`t think that ruining the pastor`s life by making her an international target of abuse over what works out to 25 cents is particularly forgiveable.

Left a snarky comment on a receipt: now subject to endless abuse from strangers.

Publicly humiliated a total stranger: lost a minimum wage job.

So a situation that really should have been left to her line manager to say `what a poostorm you`ve caused, we`ve had the tight-arsed pastor ringing up to complain...so just let the story die and don`t do it again`......has turned into an even bigger poostorm because someone knee-jerked a disciplinary response.

I know the employment laws are different over there with regards to firing people but here they`d have to in their employee handbook a lawful disciplinary process (that doesn`t start with `get your coat and drat off`) and they`d have had to follow it - usually by suspending the person, then having a hearing within the week.

Thanks @Bakcagain! Your support is appreciated.

@WhoDat: I never said "I" could figure it out, just that it does identify the store. If 100K people worked on it, I`ll bet one will have access to the database, or have visited the same store, eh?

Also: if she posted this on her FaceBook (or whatever social media thing), and everyone knew she works at Applebees (because it says so on her FaceBook page), it`s not too difficult to guess where the picture came from, correct? The ID number can confirm it. Proof.

With the specific name of the patron also printed? It`s clear she made a mistake, and thus lost her job.

Of course she was going to get fired. Of course a company, so large that basic human caring becomes lost by corporate bureaucrats who`ve never even met any of their waiters and waitresses, would react in this way. It`s unsurprising.

No one`s arguing that Applebee`s wasn`t within their rights to fire her, no one`s saying it was illegal. They`re saying that they believe it`s morally wrong. That corporate culture is inhuman and unjust.

Whether or not you agree is a rather moot point, arguing morals rarely leads anywhere and you`re better off saving your keystrokes. Ultimately there are enough people agreeing that Applebee`s will likely regret it`s actions for a short time. Perhaps some small lesson will be learned, though I have my doubts.

The server that posted the receipt was not the server that waited on the so-called pastor and her party. Just because you don`t agree with a company policy, that doesn`t give you a right to violate it.

sure they don`t get sued for breach of privacy by sue happy america. Someone in the same area as you might be able to work out the information. Or recognise the receipt if it has a bit more information like a mandatory 18% on it... But if 5cats was in same time and ate similar places as you he could work it out. He lives in Canada means he won`t

@whodat6484 here is a copy of the original It has an easy to identify signature if you know the person. That will give you the area. The original photo was taken from a phone. That makes it likely it had a gps location stored in it`s data. The layout and format of the receipt can be remembered or recognised by people in the area. Takes them checking their own receipt from the night before if they are inclined.

That is a lot of identifiable information of the customer and then the restaurant by association. As 5cats said it takes just one person to release the details with the picture online and the poo hit the fan. The Pastor has had to remove her twitter and Facebook pages for the abuse. Pastor rung applebees they fired the worker in line with their privacy policy and has a gesture to make

@5Cats - You said, "@WhoDat: The "Merchant ID" is clearly visible, and identifies Applebees."

The only reason you know it`s Applebees is because you had prior knowledge from reading the story. If you picked up a receipt somewhere with a Merchant ID on it, you can`t trace it to a particular store unless you run around looking for more receipts to match it hoping one has the name on it. I`m simply telling you that a Merchant ID alone is not all you need to easily identify where that receipt came from. Here`s a receipt with a Merchant ID, tell me when you find out what specific restaurant this receipt comes from, I already know the answer.

@WhoDat: WTF are you "on about"?
Are you denying that one person with a reciept from the same store is all that`s required to KNOW which restaurant is involved? NO!
Are you putting forth evidence that the waitress involved DID NOT identify Applebee`s in her postings? NO!

I PUT FORTH: her origional post contained:
enough information to track the restaurant
enough information to track the customer.

Sober up, bro, and deal with the FACTS.

All it takes is ONE person, and it`s no longer "private" eh?
Thus Chelsea violated the rules, violated the laws and disregarded common decency. PERIOD.

Sorry to be so stern with you, I`m in a foul mood...

applebees had good reason to fire her. the pastor may have been a c*nt, but that doesnt mean she deserves all this negative attention (can you imagine the amount of people trying to get a hold of her just so they can insult her). the waitress screwed herself over by not having enough sense to post the receipt with out the pastors signature in the first time. be careful what you post on the internet, you never know how itll come back to bite you in the ass.

What bothers me the most, and by reading the comments on Facebook it seems like most people feel the same, is that they showed no loyalty to their employee whatsoever. Once the picture went viral they went into damage control mode and fired the waitress without thinking twice. The least they could have done was do some kind of investigation and then make a decision once all concerned parties had made statements about the incident. They expect their employees to pledge their loyalty to the company but will immediately fire them and wash their hands like it never happened.

That may be so @WhoDat, but since I have no idea what her origional post consisted of, I just thought I`d mention that.
She later tried to "edit it out" but it was far too late.
Anyone with a reciept from the same store? They`d know 100% which one it was, eh?

IDK what her post and comments were, she might have directly (or indirectly) let people know it was Applebee`s that way too.

Anyhow, it`s not like she went TO JAIL or something! Waiters & waitresses get fired a lot, for the stupidest reasons, it`s part of the job.

The Merchant ID may be visible but from what I`ve read, it takes a lot more than a simple Google search to look it up. The number is unique to each store and is used by banks and credit card companies to identify that particular business.

@WhoDat: The "Merchant ID" is clealy visible, and identifies Applebees.

Also, she posted a picture from INSIDE the restaurant, AND identified a customer by name, without permission. Both are firing offences as per their guidelines.

It also says she "commented on it" which IDK but sounds like she did more than just "post a picture".

When she originally posted it, if she didn`t mention Applebee`s or the name Applebee`s was not shown in the picture of the receipt, then she didn`t disregard company policy. It just happened to spread like wildfire on the internet and was eventually traced back to them.
