Typical American, no. My brother has a shotgun and a .357 Magnum. My uncle is a hunter. He has a few shotguns and rifles. My best friend has a couple shotguns and a rifle for hunting. None of them has a semi-automatic riffle. I don`t know anyone but a few people on here who own them. My best friend doesn`t understand why civilians need them. He thinks they should never have been legal. I wholeheartedly agree. As soon as they became legal, criminals were able to get a hold of them through friends. I think it`s too late in the game to do anything about it now. Approving these in the first place was just one more way congress has f*cked America.

@markust: Don`t let facts stand in the way of your ranting!
"Semi-Automatic" has been around for 100+ years. First in pistols, very popular before WW1. Yes ONE, not 2.
In the 20`s? The gangsters had a wide assortment of illegal weapons, eh? What did laws do to stop them? Nothing.
Now the "drug gangs" have all manner of illegal weapons, some supplied by the CIA! What will more laws do to change this? Nothing.

As long as Obama protects Holder? (Fast & Furious) He`s the #1 hypocrite on the planet.

I wonder if it scares Glenn Beck at all when he sees pictures like this of the crazy he created in people. Did it scare him when one of his fans was stopped on the way to massacre people in the San Francisco Tides Foundation and the ACLU? Did it scare him when that guy instead open fired on the police that stopped him? Did it bother him when the shooter later reviled that it was Beck`s show that drove him over the edge?

Really 5Cats? I`m not even going to waste my time with someone who changes the argument to gangsters of the 20`s just to pretend someone has their facts wrong. Arguing with you is like playing tennis against a wall. I was talking about the semi-automatic riffles of today. I`m talking about when the M16 was modified in 1963 to be sold to the public as the AR-15. That never should have been legal.

@markust: Nice try at changing the topic, but 116 years after the fact is a LITTLE BIT too late, eh?

Of course you were talking about "something else" other than what you said... obviously!

Fact remains: "gun grabbers" have no freaking idea what they`re talking about. An AR-15 is essentially identical to 100 other guns out there,(.223, semi-auto, civilian) but they`ve chosen it as their "whipping boy".

Just like the Beatles records, it`s NOT the maker, it`s the person listening who has "a problem".

Glenn Beck is way different than a Beattle`s song or a Judas Priest song. His violent rhetoric is I believe very dangerous for people who are on the edge. It is just entertainment to most people but I think he does have the power to push unstable people past an idea to action. Glenn Beck is the king of repetition (brainwashing). An intelligent mind has no chance against repetition. Think what it does to an unstable mind to consistently have violent rhetoric pushed into it? This is way different than one lyric. Glenn will push different versions of the same idea in from various directions until it is stuck in the persons head (he tells it, he draws it, he shows videos of it, he pushes and pushes and pushes). It is this dangerous rhetoric that I think got him fired from Fox. They saw two organizations almost get shot up because of him and cut there loses before one of his fans succeeded.

"The AR-15 was developed by Armalight which was then purchased by colt to be made into the M16."

You are twisting the wording around a bit to something that does not resemble history. This is from Wikipedia, "The select-fire AR-15 entered the US military system as the M16 rifle. Colt then marketed the Colt AR-15 as a semi-automatic version of the M16 rifle for civilian sales in 1963."

My point is the gun was designed specifically for the military to kill as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time. Just because you have to pull the trigger each time on the AR-15 modified version of the M16 does not make its original intentions any less deadly. I agree with my gun owner friend. The AR-15 should never have been made legal to civilians.

But Beck is exactly like 20-30 other "talking heads" on "news TV" who spout rhetoric of all stripes. But mostly leftist... CNN is crawling with hard-left liberals who desperately try to pass themselves as "centerists" while spouting endless propoganda...

"Origional intention" see? This is where your error is. Origionally the AR-15 was full auto, but NOW it is NOT. Thus the "origional intention" of it is irrelivant! What the AR-15 actually is, after 1963, is a CIVILIAN gun.

The "origional intention" of the VW Beetle was to glorify the Third Reich, correct? See how silly that is?

Definitely not typical no, this guy lives somewhere in the remote Cascadian wilderness in a shoddy log cabin with Bigfoot as his only neighbor. His clothes consist of sunglasses and camo with the occasional flea infested elk pelt thrown in. His diet is nuts and berries, the congealed goo that is all that remains of his wild game kills, painstakingly scraped from the surrounding trees, and water squeezed from his own shat. Because boiling water until potable is for sissies who don`t care about the gubmint`s secret mind control fluoridation.

I repeat, not typical, but sadly not entirely mythical either...

We`re going to have to agree to disagree. The AR-15 is a modified M16. I believe what it was created for (killing as many people in as short a period as possible) is very important when looking at this gun. I have not said it should be banned now. I am saying it never should have been made legal in the first place.

the m16 wasn`t made to kill it is made to maim because maiming not killing takes more people off the battlefield. the bullet is a smaller caliber for this reason. it was also made to fill in a gap. previous guns were long range guns made to hit targets beyond 300 yards. handguns got targets under 30 yards. there was a need to injure people between 30 and 300 yards. it was made to fill a gap

i own one of these, a Baker Rifle, it was designed to give the british military a long range edge over napoleons forces and used to snipe officers at ranges a musket couldn`t be relied on. by some of the dippy definitions i´ve seen presented here, it also is a "military style assault weapon".
also things from before 1920? can i have an M1919 ? because that`s made before 1920 so it must totally be okay to own.
point remains, your society is the screw up, not the guns. look at WHY these things happen, the motive for it, the poo police look into with every murder. ask why a tool was used in that manner, and not blame the tool as if it has a mind of it´s own. if we go by that then we should be banning frying pans and wine bottles. the most commonly used tool in violent crime is the blunt object.

markust: Full-Auto mode on any weapon is not specifically made for killing a lot of people quickly. Full-Auto is for covering fire, strafing, keeping your enemies heads down and out of the fight until they can be out maneuvered or other area-affect weapons, like mortars, can be engaged on the enemy.

Full-Auto mode on weapons with even 30 round clips go through ammo very quickly. That`s why commanders prefer their troops to keep their guns on Semi-Auto at most times. The Squad Automatic Weapon, or SAW, is the weapon that is preferred to be used in Full-Auto for covering fire.

Perhaps some reading on military tactics and history would be in order, because an M-16 in Full-Auto is not accurate and not the preferred mode for it in the field. The military doesn`t like spraying bullets around, they prefer accuracy.

I do like reading and learning. What you are saying contradicts what I learned from reading about the 1948 Project SALVO study that was part of an M16 article. What I read is the chance of being hit in combat is random, that aiming made little difference because the targets no longer sit still. That the number one predictor of casualties was the total number of bullets fired. Also soldiers armed with rapid fire weapons were much more likely to have fired their weapons in battle. That is where I came up with my conclusion.

Nah they`re all contained in shells meaning they`d all go off at different times and seperatly. As for projectiles flying everywhere that also wouldn`t happen because the bullet has to be pushed through a barrel to reach a high velocity if it fires in open air the majority of energy is dissipated.

to be fair, looking at the walls and carpet, i more suspect it`s simply his lighting or his camera´s light detection at fault for it all being yellow.
i have the same effect occur when i take a photo indoors and don`t set my camera`s light filters.

Obama should preach for house control so we can sell all houses up for sale and solve the real estate problem. Then my house would be worth way more like my guns!

How do we know this isn`t just a staged stock photo news organizations can buy when they need a photo of a "gun nut"? It seams a little too perfect with the Glenn Beck, flag and all.

@Coffeetalk - so you think this picture is normality? Keep talking, the guards are narrowing your position down.

markust: In 1948 the main single-man automatic rifles were the BAR and the Thompson Sub-Machine Gun. Neither were built to be accurate to 100 yards or more. Back then spray and pray was the norm, that is no longer the case.

Tactics have changed a lot since WWII, both Korea and Vietnam taught us many tactical lessons.

One of which is that you don`t gamble with a Sicilian when death is on the line.

"Tactics have changed a lot since WWII, both Korea and Vietnam taught us many tactical lessons."

I am sure many tactics have changed a lot since WWII. Not sure what has changed with a moving target. They are still hard to hit. And it is probably still true that soldiers are more likely to fire a rapid fire weapon in battle. Even when trained to kill I bet it is hard for some people to aim a gun at someone. Being able to spray bullets takes away some of that stigma. I bet the same thing can be said for mass shootings. Really not sure what your point is. The report was used as research for the project to create the M16. This was looking forward not backwards. They were applying lessons of WWII for future battles.

markust: Well I can assure you that military tactics now are not `spray and pray`. Our military is trained to be accurate and disciplined under fire, not only for tactical reasons but to minimize any collateral damage and loss of innocent life.

Sure, there are times Full-Auto might be the necessary setting on an M-4/M-16 in battle, but as a general rule it is not.
